    This is a great idea. I can already hear the chorus of people saying to just use pliers, which of course you can, but I think this tool will mar the hinge surface a lot less, and that is important in many applications.

    Thanks. I saw another video on this which didn't quite help. The gentlemen in that didn't show a close-up, so didn't realize you can bend the door hinge knuckles separately (with the door removed). If you don't do that, the door hinge does not bend, the door simply moves.

    Looks great! I just ordered one. Question: The Knuckle Bender has two jaws, one fixed and one adjustable. The fixed side is short and stubby, and the adjustable side is longer and has more of a beak. When sliding the wrench over the knuckle, does it matter which way the wrench is oriented? Fixed jaw on the left if bending the knuckle to the left (adjustable jaw to the right), or fixed jaw on the right (adjustable jaw to the left) if bending the knuckle to the left? It's used both ways in the video, but I saw comments elsewhere whereby a small number of users were somehow breaking the tip on the adjustable jaw (what I referred to as the beak) so I want to make sure that I use it correctly.

    There might be a set screw holding the pin in position. Look at all of the knuckles on the hinges giving you trouble. And on all sides.

    I am curious what door guys have to say about this technique? Does this process cause any other problems like casing a non smooth opening of the door (if the pin is bowed and under tension from the bending)? Do doors still ALWAYS open/hinge smoothly?

    I've been a door guy for 30+ years. No problems should arise if done correctly. I've used a regular adjustable wrench for years, to do the same thing. One way you could have issues is if your door casing is thick like a 1x4 and there is little to no clearance to move the knuckle.

    Seems like any door that's near a corner this tool will not work on when the knuckles need to be bent towards the wall . The end of the handle hits the wall before adjustments are made. Good in theory, but more times than not it has not worked.

    In this situation you should be able to remove the door and bend the knuckles on the door part of the hinge rather than the frame part, then reinstall the door. That’s what I had to do in my house.

    This is a tool that may be useful in a few situations. But only in those situations where there is only a very small adjustment needed to stop a door from rubbing. Most hinges have very little clearance in between each half of the hinge itself. You may only need a sixteenth of an inch of movement of the door to stop a rubbing problem. If that is the case then consider yourself lucky. But if you take out all the space between the hinge faces you may then get hinge binding and the door will not want to close. But what if you need to move the door or doors more than the amount of clearance that exists between the hinge faces? It does not matter if you have a very old house or a very new house. Houses settle and you would be amazed how much even perfectly installed doors can move. If this tool solves your problem then great. If not you still have two more options....shave material and re finish ...or take the casing off and re set the shimming. Once again...this tool will work if you only need a very small adjustment.

    Actually, that's not the case at all. The tool has been widely used in the marketplace for over three years with great success we have never had a single person ever come back to us and say it does not work. Paul

  • @Makoonga

    @Makoonga

    Hi Paul. I did not say it did not work. A hinge can only be moved until it hits itself. There is never much room between the hinge faces. I have seen larger hinges that are typically used for 7 and 8 foot doors that may have a full 1/8th inch of space between the hinge faces but typically there is not much space between the hinge faces. I pointed out that a sixteenth may be enough clearance to stop a door from rubbing the jamb or another door. If you can show me how to move a door edge more than the actual clearance inside a hinge (without re mortising) I will be more than happy to delete my words, or even offer an apology. I am not against this product but there is only so much movement this tool can give the user. I feel that many people will buy it thinking it will solve their clearance problem(s) and it may or it may not. If they over bend the hinge they will get hinge binding. Then they have to try to bend the hinge back a little. It's not that big a deal to me. You are more than welcome to delete my comments but I am not wrong.

    @@Makoonga - If you lack much separation for the upper hinge to be pulled together, what about moving to the bottom hinge plates and working to separate them. Of course, you need room between the lower door and the jamb, but that's an option to explore, right? I am about to that right now. I have a two-hinge bedroom door sticking on the top side of the free side of the door. I will push the upper hinge plates apart. This will cause the door to rotate so the high free end drops and moves away from the hinge and the lower free end drops. I have checked and I have room for that. Is there a reason I should not try this (besides bending an otherwise perfectly good hinge)? :-)

  • @Makoonga

    Hi Bruzote...man this is a very old comment of mine. I've been dealing with doors of all kinds for 50 years. There are only a few options to correct doors that stick and / or rub. This tool is not a bad idea but the circumstances in which it will be effective are...I don't know...I'd say 15% of the time. Has the foundation moved...has moisture made the door swell...have load stresses from upper levels caused the door framing to buckle? Did the Devil do it? There are any number of causes that create the problem(s). If you are a basic Do It Your selfer you may solve the problem with this tool or you may make the problem worse. I could try to describe the other options to fix the problem but not knowing your skill level would make such an idea kinda silly on my part. I seriously believe that I could make a good living off of You Tube by taking DIY videos and tearing them apart and demonstrating the actual best way(s) to get all the hundreds of house projects performed. But alas, I'm retired. I missed the You Tube videos bonanza. Give it a try Bruzote. The worst you can do is ruin the hinge. Hinges are not all that expensive. Good luck.

    @@Makoonga In the circumstances as you said that this tool is useful, this tool will save hinges from being gouged by using the wrong tool such as pump pliers and standard adjustable wrenches. Yes. I am guilty of using these tools. Practice is least invasive and very precise.
