ADHD Friendly Way to Plan Your Day -- Owaves Review! (iOS)

Planning and prioritizing can be quite a challenge for ADHD Brains -- so when our external structure falls apart (heyyy, COVID...) we often need a lil help rebuilding. This video, I partnered with Owaves (owaves.com/howtoadhd) to show you their incredibly ADHD friendly app on iOS, which makes it easy to visually structure our day -- and their new feature "My Moai" lets us connect with others to see their day, too!

    Hello Brains! If you do try out the app and you like it, and you wanna leave a review, use #HowtoADHD - 2 reasons: 1) they’ll donate to the channel for every review, 2) I’m really curious to know what you guys think. If I know what my community thinks of this app - I will go through and read those reviews - then it helps me make better content for you guys in the future! For ANDROID users -- it looks like Owaves is planning an Android version, you can sign up to be notified here: owaves.com/android/ In the meantime, several of the brains have recommended Sectograph :)

    Here's how I plan out my day: have a to do list I rarely stick to, procrastinate something super important, have a mental breakdown over not having completed that super important thing weeks ago, begin that super important thing through tears of stress, realise its easy to continue once ive begun and finish it.

    I try to have three priorities in a day. First priority is something urgent, unpleasant or mentally exhausting (say bills, taxes, that one phone call or email I've put off forever). I'm allowed to spend 15 minutes with it, no more. If I've not finished by the time the timer goes off, no problem, I'll continue the next day. If I spend that 15 minutes crying and shaking in a corner because I just CANNOT do it that day, that's fine too. When the time's up I don't have to worry about it for the next 24 hours. The next two priorities have to do with study/work and pets/home. These I do after the urgent one. Not everything gets done everyday. But I've not ran out of socks yet.

    This actually seems like something I might try. The concept is something I've played with a little recently (got some seriously stressful DPS business taken care of, only took a couple of meltdowns, lol.) but 15 minutes is actually a more accurate timeframe than the hour I was stressing myself out with. I'll try it your way.

    Very smart... give yourself permission to spend only 15m on a dreaded task. BTW I’ve got a similar list (plus healthcare insurance/provider research/selection).

  • @sushuis6247

    @sushuis6247

    @@noh-1386 My reasoning was that it's much easier to commit 15 minutes than say, an hour. Plus if the task is gonna take me an hour total, I'll be done in four days instead of procrastinating with it for weeks and months because I don't know where or when to start. I actually tried with an hour first and yeeeah, this is definitely more doable. :D Also, if I don't know the steps involved in doing the thing, the first 15 can be spent trying to figure those out or doing some research. Do let me know if you deside to try it out and how it goes.

    One think I've found helpful when scheduling is to always give myself more than one option for each block of time. 10-11 am can be Coding / Reading Essay / Exercising, and then 11-12 can be Gaming / Napping / Reading fiction. This makes it so I don't think about a schedule as a shackle but instead just a selection of important things that I can choose from ad-hoc instead of wasting time on things that are not important (social media)

    @@natashatuskovichcoworking This is something that it's pretty standard to write into a behaviour management plan for people with autism spectrum disorders or other disabilities that have neurological impacts. Routines are the absolute key, but we always offer choices whenever we can, because it turns the task into a positive experience that the client chose for themselves, rather than a negative experience that was forced upon them. Even with tasks you think are non-negotiable like brushing teeth, the teeth brushing part is non-negotiable but we can offer the choice of now or later, choice of toothbrush, choice of toothpaste, whatever works. "Hey, would you like to brush your teeth with the mint or the bubblegum toothpaste this morning?". If you can include lots of little choices throughout the day, it helps to feel like your day has structure, without feeling overly controlled.

    As a law student with ADHD, my biggest strategy has been keeping a future calendar - for example, as soon as I get an email that has to do with a future time commitment, I throw that in my calendar. Then, I keep lists of tasks that don't have specific times but I need to do. Mid week, I'll see all the tasks I need to do and check off what I've already done. I can also block out time in the future to finish a task. For example, I had a problem with my electricity bill this month. I picked a day 3-4 days ahead to call the company when I knew I'd have enough time, and I remembered to do it because I had a calendar notification. Also, I was more mentally prepared to tackle this task since I had planned to do it. This helps me break down an overwhelming day/week into manageable bits.

    I do this too and it has worked long term! I use todoist to keep track of tasks. The key for me is to not make due dates unless it really needs to be done by that day. I have to use calendar appointments for real appointments and rare scheduled tasks so it’s always good information. Too much or wishful thinking planning and I’ll just ignore the whole thing.

    Jessica, You have been such an inspiration and drive for me to better myself as someone who struggles with ADHD. For years growing up I never felt like I "clicked" with anyone. I was too loud, too energetic, too "random". But watching your videos not only teaches me how to deal with my ADHD, but also teaches me things I didn't realize about myself. More so than that, showing anyone can have bad days makes me feel better about my bad days. I struggled a lot in my early adult life with negative thoughts and emotions. I would lash out at people, and to be honest, it's a work in progress. I know I still have much to do to be the best version of myself, and I know that somehow I will get there, because I have you and your videos. So thank you for making this channel, and thank you for embracing your ADHD to show the world that ADHD isn't a curse, it's a superpower! Sincerely, A very appreciative viewer

    I've been researching ADHD a lot because my friend was just diagnosed, and when I found this channel, I was so impressed by how perfect everything was. It was so professional! Then, I saw this video, and it makes me feel so validated. I'm not even sure how to explain. Everything is still amazingly professional and I'm so impressed by the quality still. But I have a lot of perfectionistic behaviors and habits, and this helps me realize and see that I don't have to have perfect eye contact to make an incredible video. Now, me making an incredible video is still likely not going to happen because of other beliefs and limitations but at least now I know that eye contact isn't necessarily something I need to do 24/7 lol. So, thank you. Thank you for making so many high quality videos, especially this one. I feel like I understand ADHD a lot better, and that as an educator, I can support students with ADHD in a more effective and informed way. Thank you for not making eye contact. Thank you for being here even when so much has been happening in the world. Thank you for all you've helped me understand. Thank you so much for doing this channel! It has helped me out a lot at just understanding myself. I moved out here to Seattle July 2019 and have been struggling to go through things to downsize. It isn't easy as I am also starting to work through a divorce and I just don't have the drive to get up and do things like I did 2 years ago. You are an inspiration! I will be using some of the things I have learned here and trying to get things done one step at a time! For whoever is reading this, you can do it! You can do what you need to do, want to do (within reason). You are strong, capable, and never alone!

    Honestly yeah I've tried out a smartwatch and it's not generally for me, but if there were such a thing as a watch device that was dedicated specifically to an app like this and worked well with it, then I would probably go for it if it were affordable. I'd rather have a dedicated device for this app, that makes the circle view the default display, than a full smartwatch. Far less distracting.

    @@92RKID It sounded to me like you work in the "back" and it's a big deal that you are able to have music and those little things. But that's really not much to do with the job you are doing, so why do so many places micromanage it as long as there's not a safety issue or what have you? It's like places don't expect employees to be humans sometimes. I'm glad your job is cool but it reminds me of places that are way too rigid. I worked for someone once who told me not to write down instructions. And for someone who said I had to be at my station by 8 a.m. (reasonable) but I couldn't get there five minutes early to make my tea and have the buffer of time that I need to make 8 a.m. consistently. (Not ADHD but definitely a space cadet with terrible organization and sense of time.)
