Hi Mark, that Coyote is living off the rodents around the Farm (squirrel, rabbit, rat, etc); it's not likely to be attracted to your presence, unless it is rabid; that Male Coyote in the video looks to be alert and active. Best regards.

@@iamorganicgardening I agree with Lawi. If you raise chickens or rabbits you'll of course want to make sure they're safe in a secure coop, pen or tractor, especially at night. But a lone healthy coyote is not much danger to people at all. I wouldn't actually encourage them to hang around, but I wouldn't worry about it much either. They're part of the whole balance of nature. Just keep your distance. :)

Coyotes are just critters living their lives. Could be problematic for house pets or smaller farm animals, so need to keep them secure. The solution is to find a solution that does not involve harming the coyote. 💛

The coyote is just living its life. It’s not interested in you. You’re lucky to have a robust environment there!

We all love to see ladybugs, praying mantis and other insect predators in our gardens to balance the 6 legged pests. The coyote is the ultimate in organic rodent pest control that could otherwise pose problems in the garden. He's an essential partner no less important than any other element in maintaining balance. Unless you're growing rabbits or chickens I'd consider him an asset.

I did a potato bed this year. I cut down 2 cedar trees that were 20' tall. Cut both into 4' and 16' sections and assembled into a rectangle on the ground. I laid small limbs across the bottom of the bed 6" thick, then laid down 2-3' of leaves, rabbit poop & pine shavings (free from any rabbit keepers), and then more lives, more poop, top soil and compost and then another foot of leaves. Water each layer as you add like building a compost pile. I let it sit for a few weeks early spring then planted with yukon gold potatoes. 10 huge spuds. I bet I get over 250 lbs of potatoes from that bed and I hilled them with leaves 2x and maybe watered them 3-5 times total. A bed like that doesn't need it. Stays moist and humid all summer in texas heat! Potatoes are almost ready to harvest - flowered and falling over. I like the cardboard box idea because it's hard to inteplant anything with potatoes so the boxes can be put anywhere and dont take up valuable soil and bed real estate. Also, put out a bucket of water for that coyote. He's taking care of your rat and rabbit problem. :)

Hi, do you mind providing an update on how your potato bed worked out?

We have 100's of coyotes in the woods around my place. I don't go running around my pasture at night but during the day just clapping my hands and using my big girl voice scares them off. I have llama's and donkey's in the pasture, they naturally chase coyotes. A good watch dog will also help, but you don't want to have that watch dog outnumbered by a dozen coyotes. They are more afraid of you then you are of them. All that being said, my dog when I was a child was 1/2 coyote. She was intelligent, loving, & loyal.

Coyotes are like owls. They come in when there's an abundance of rodents and leave when the supply is reduced. I've had coyotes come 50' close to me because they didn't see me. As soon as they noticed me they took off. You can carry an air horn and bear spray (50' reach) if you'd like but I doubt you'll need it. The more they see human activity - the more they are likely to look for field mice elsewhere. Or only hunt at night. Taters are looking great! - KJ

My insect pest has been earwigs. It becomes a night time routine to go out and knock the earwigs into a half gallon plastic container and lid it. Next day, the chickens get a treat of earwigs.

hey Mark, love the cardboard box idea. so simple, I grow potatoes every year and never thought of it. I'll definitely be trying it for my fall spuds. I'm in south jersey and always appreciate your relatively local updates.

The last place had coyotes and I didn't have a rodent problem. For the 16 years I lived there I would see them often but they would run when ever they saw me. Maybe the kind we have in Southern Oregon are just shy. I really like all your videos and watch some more then once. Thanks for taking to time to make them.

We enjoy having Coyote around. Here, they've been no trouble. But, we supervise our dogs and our dogs are never out, running free. We have specific, fenced areas, where our dogs are allowed (and we are out with them). We hear lots of chat and calls when the Coyote are passing through in the evenings. There's a 3,000 acre reserve that our land backs up to.

I really like the way you present your information. I’m so tired of the hyper-types. With your program I feel comfortable and safe.

We had a pack of dogs and coyote close to our farm. The once chased my boys to the barn to the house. The Boys saw them at the bottom of the hill starting move up watching them. They immediately took off for the house. The fence slowed them down enough for the boys to get in the house. When coyotes are with dogs their a lot less afraid of people.

This is my second year following your advice to grow the indeterminate varieties in a box and they are doing very well. I hand pick my potato beetles and struggle to determine if egg masses are from lady beetles (I want to keep them!) or from the CPB because they look so similar. Are you able to tell the difference??

I love the box idea. Yes, I would love to see your harvest and your friend Coyote is beautiful...

Great video on growing spuds. I’m in Alberta Canada and our growing season is short. So I like this idea of getting an early start! I’ve had the potato beetle problem- it was by far the most destructive and time consuming to battle them. Going to Brice’s snd netting this year- thank you! ps- that coyote is just living his life. Keep a pint jar(with lid), filled 1/2 way with rubbing alcohol, in the garden. Any bugs found can be dropped in the jar, and they’re dead. Even torn off leaves trimmed down to egg masses. Works great for squash bugs as well.

Thanks for showing us the Potato beetle. My research has led me to believe that there are two types of potatoes, those that need hilling and those that don’t. I don’t need to hill mine as they all have the vegetable on the one level, which in at least four inches below ground. I’d be very interested in your reply.

Potatoes in containers do not need hilling that's early late or mid season. I've been growing them in containers for years. Five inches of soil in bottom add fish and bone meal. Put your cheets in and fill containers all the way full leaving four inches. More fish and bone meal. Wait till they pop up then cover with leaves grass clippings or mulch. You will get more potatoes than hilling and that's a promise !! I'm 67 and been doing this for over twenty years !! Always four to five pounds per container !!

Potatoes are our family staple and the store ones rot so quickly and I don't have a running vehicle so I have to have my groceries shipped which they don't even ship potatoes. In Arkansas, we've got more coyotes than you can shake a roadrunner at! I've been face to snout with more than I can remember. If meet one up close, and you're really, really still and quiet, maybe it won't run away before you can get a good look at it. I wouldn't give that little song-dog another thought, besides enjoying the wildlife scenery as he goes along!

i think sweet potatoes are a vining/sprawling crop, they wouldnt stay confined to the boxes

Well, I'm about 10 days later than planned, but I just planted 2 'boxes' of red potatoes today. I'll plant a couple more in a few days. I sure hope we get lots of potatoes! Thank you for your teachings! ❤

I read other comments about the coyote, hope you don't have any smaller dogs. I have ankle bitters but they are always on a leash. I have a hawk that frequents my area too. Thank you for your gardening expertise!!!!

Coyotes are good pest control----think voles and other small rodents. There is a lot of misinformation about them. They won't attack you...........they are looking for food--rabbits, rodents. I do know some farmers near me had problems with them going after their young sheep, but their usual diet is small mammals. Most, if not all, have a healthy fear of man and will keep their distance

About 50% of the russets I bought at Aldi have eyes- I’m a new gardener and grew sweet potatoes last year and it was encouraging and you’ve inspired me to do white potatoes. Are russets a longer growing species? Also I’m in Chas wv similar zone as you! When should I put these boxes with potatoes outside?

As you may have already guessed, you need to pay very close attention to your local weather in the spring. Specifically, you are going to need to watch when the last frost occurs. In general, when there hasn’t been a frost for two weeks, you are SAFE to plant your potatoes outside in West Virginia!

Good evening. I just subscribed watching your first video on growing potatoes in boxes. I live in Costa del Sol,Spain. Summers are EXTREMELY HOT here and last summer I didn't get any potatoes but just a lot of foliage. So this year I'm planting much earlier. We don't have worms here as I suspect that the heat would cook them. Question,are worm castings necessary? Thank you.

Hello Mark.....definitely going to try the box method this year...we have plenty of space to do so and the cardboard boxes can replace some of my deteriorating raised wood bed boxes. Coyote....hmmm, he will not bother you, and he may control some rodents...definitely will do in your rabbits, groundhogs and such, but what I despise is how many deer they kill. Wildlife rangers used to say deer were not a part of their diet... BULL...they will follow a deer in estrus and take the fawn ..they kill anything they can take down...they are just a step down from wolves in that regard...cattle farmers have to protect the cows during calving. Goats are very vulnerable and if a donkey is not in the field with them, they get killed quickly....ask me how I know.

Thank you for very informative video. Try plant common tansy next to your potato because my oriental Lily always suffered with Lily beetles but I plant common tansy next to it and did not have any damage this year and the Lily beetle never go near my Lily. Hope this help.

@@kathleenstahl3315 tansy is a herb that has oil that repels bugs. I planted with with my Asiatic Lily and Lily beetles did not touch them meanwhile years ago they been damage. Hope this help.

Around here in Mississippi , coyotes run in packs , so be careful , we always hear them at night , be careful if you have dogs and/or cats at night

I haven't had that beetle in my potato bed but want to know if a light diatomaceous earth dusting would eliminate them. Or are their exoskeletons too tough for it to work? I use it on my plants while they are inside before spring planting to control fungus gnats. I know rain could be a problem. Thanks!

Hi Mark!!! New to organic gardening and your channel and love the info! Question: I have tons of oak leaves. I have read not to compost them or put them in the garden as mulch as it is not good for the soil PH. Is this true? Can I use them to put on my potato’s? And can I compost them?

I use Oak leaves all the time. I cover a least 2 acres with them and never had a problem. Plants roots control their own soil PH. YES & YES. Hi Mark! I am a few weeks in on this method and have a question. I have great foliage growth so far. I only used a small amount of worm castings and soil to cover the potato and then added the leaves in the box for mulch. Do I need to put more soil as the foliage grows or can I put more leaves?

Sorry for the delay. Grass clipping should be first decay a little a few months ( turn brown and have no heat from them ) before adding to soil. it is better to us fall leaves

Those plants look great. I am not far from you in NJ, zone 6b. We have had so much rain the past few weeks. How do you control for slugs? I did not see any on your potato plants.

I do not have a any slugs due to lots of frogs. But you should place a large wooden board on top of the ground and every day fill it over and find those slugs , they love hiding there and remove them from your garden

I woodchipped my garden this year . We have had a lot of rain this Spring but I wonder if the wood chips are also encouraging them . Will definitely try the board. Thanks Mark.

@@njbass. There is a video o YT about harvesting slugs... A slug farm... They do the board trick at a commercial scale. Interesting video and proves the concept if you have not tried it yet

In Colorado, coyotes are classified as a game species and may be taken year-round with either a small game or a furbearer license. Landowners may kill coyotes, without a license, on their land if the coyotes threaten their property or livestock.

Sorry it does not work. BT spray is organic, if you wish to spray.

A 22-250 will take care of that coyote!

They are very hard shells.. I am not thinking so.

If you dont have leaves ( just pine needles) will mulch work like keaves? Ive used 5 gal white buckets previously and with good results but loke the idea of boxes.

The pine needles are not as thick a leaves so use more of them . You do not want sunlight to reach the potatoes, If it does they the potatoes will turn green.

That coyote won't bother you. He's not stalking you either. There's probably a lot of mice, moles, and voles in all that leave mulch you have. That's their main diet. In Ohio we can dispatch them year round. Our problem is the cougars that are starting to become more populated. DNR denies they exist even though we send them the pictures we have

I just seen why the one is aggressive. There is a female also walking around much smaller and a den nearby.

So how do you get rid of these bugs ?

Did you fertilize the potatoes with anything other than the worm castings?

I dont have leaves avail here in AZ.. what else is best? I've put my garden soil.. but I'm thinking it's compacts too much?

Palm leaves, hay, straw, pine needles, Thick enough to block all the sunlight.

use companion plants that deter pests like garlic an basil.

YES, just place them thick enough so light can not get throw it.

Hi Mark. I am looking for some knowledge. I have bunchb of Kennebec patatos in the ground at the moment they are in small mounds within trenches. I was forced to trench deep enough to keep the patato from sitting in water.. we are having a very wet June here in the pacific northwest. That being said the local arborist has dropped off a load of chips mixed with leaves. Even after one day the pile is pretty warm. Can I use the chips to hill my pataos without fear of them being composted? Probably a silly question. It's just that given the world's current situation. ... a nice yield would help our potential future. Hope all is well with you your Son. Semper Fi

Just add 2 to 3 inch's at a time, this way it will not heat up. Then next week do the same again until they have a good hill on them,

I have two long beds in a enclosed garden area made with treated wood sides. They were not quite deep enough but I did not want to buy the overpriced wood this year…..I decided to put barn roof slate as walls inside the planters with the wood holding them firmly….now I have deep planting areas and reused those slates that were doomed to be discarded! ….I put kitchen scraps on top of the old soil then garden soil and compost the a nice layer of leaves……I intend to hammer rebar into soil at the corners and make a hoop house over these garden beds. Next to our house I’m repurposing a flower bed into a kitchen garden so as to have a pretty but functional area . I have food safe white buckets and I’m layering kitchen waste, soil and compost in them but I really don’t care for the white bucket look so I’m going to wrap them in light weight flannel and tying garden twine around them to secure it…… To keep my cat and other critters out of the containers round tree limbs make a four cornered fence then I take voile and place over the top of the limbs but not tight so it has some movement and I secure with wood clothes pins or small clips..it’s worked for me for two years this way. Small 1 in pieces of pool noodle glued with outdoor hot glue to each of the top of the limbs keeps the material from ripping.
