Did You Say Planting Potatoes In Cardboard Boxes?

Hello KZread family,
Update...if you want to see how this project turned out go to the video...
• Potatoes In Cardboard ...
This is how I planted this year and they are doing great!...
• Changing The Way I Pla...
Sometimes things just won't grow the way you want them to, so you have to come up with another plan. That is what we are doing with our potatoes this year. We planted 10 pounds of potatoes in 4 large Amazon boxes.
Check back in the fall to see if this was a good plan. It can't be any worse than the previous growing years! It is definitely worth a try!
Here is a list of things needed...
*sturdy boxes, the larger the better
*chicken wire, enough to wrap the boxes
*straw, enough for 6-8" per box and then enough to cover as the potatoes grow (we used 3/4 of a square bale for our four boxes)
*compost or composted manure, enough for 4" per box
*seed potatoes, these can be cut into smaller pieces with an "eye" on each piece. If you cut them allow the cut edge to dry for a day or two so that it doesn't rot after planting
*the hope that this will work...lol
Come follow us on our new Facebook page... / openhandfarm
I am adding additional learning information here!
Enjoy!

    CAUTION>>>>if you live in a zone where u have termites DO NOT USE the carboard method or any cardboard around the garden...the humidity and the "smell" of cardboard will attract them like bees to the nectar...Sadly I tried in my garden (Texas) and ended up with a huge problem with termites and since i do not want to spray my soil with chemicals had to get ride of cardboard. I also by me not knowing...helped the population of mini centipedes to explode, and oh boy huge, and I mean huge, explosion of those critters which started to eat the roots of my vegetables... This year still battling them with soap and orange oil, they are hard to kill I am telling you just in case. I do not mind to have some of them around but when numbers are large then it is a problem to the plants...(after a rain, the walls of the house, fences, pots were covered entirely with the mini centepides...kind of horror movie LOLOL). so watch out with the use of cardboard...in some areas will work pretty good to hold moisture, but in others is a nightmare.

    old shadecloth would be cheaper than the wire: the flaps of the boxes would have been nice in bottom of box: old leaves at bottom of box instead of straws

  • @OpenHandFarm

    @OpenHandFarm

    2 жыл бұрын

    The wire will help support the box as it gets broken down more. I considered cutting the flaps and putting in the bottom but the flaps help the box be sturdier. I did use old leaves in the bottom of my sweet potatoes. I didn’t have any leaves at the time or I would have. Thanks for the recommendations!

    I've never plant potatoes before. I'm just wondering how many potatoes do you get from one potato?

  • @OpenHandFarm

    @OpenHandFarm

    2 жыл бұрын

    Supposedly you get 5 to 10 potatoes per plant. I’ve never gotten that yet. I am hopeful that I will this year. If you’ve never planted them I will say, it’s one of the easiest things to do. You plant them, cover them up, and there you go. You do need to water periodically.

    Thanks so much for sharing Lee! We didn’t get a very good harvest this way. I decided that the black fabric under them might not have allowed water to escape enough and we had a lot of rain so everything was too soggy. Not sure, but went totally different this year. Please keep me posted on yours, I would love to know how your yield is. It could have just been a wonky year for us. The sweet potatoes did great though.
