Adding fire brick to the fire box of my Char-Griller Grand Champ XD Series smoker.
I wanted to insulate my fire box and figured fire brick was the way to go so here are the results.
Using a new recording device and I'm getting used to it. sorry about the low volume situation. If you have any questions, please feel free to post and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Great idea, the best thing I see is that it's protecting your fire box for sure...

Yes and it helps retain heat and I'm not losing my coals through a grate.
Genius!!! Will be adding to my smoker and my grill.
It's interesting to see the various mods done to these. I know of one that only added gaskets and RTV and maintains his temps just by the size of his splits. Lots to think about. Lol
I wonder if we could make a retangular-round bricks of a third of the size of the firebox. They go on top of the bottom fire bricks like a dome. Formable refractory cement might work?
You don’t use the deflection plate. Correct? Also, did you extend your chimney? Just curious as I picked up this smoker recently and have yet to season it. Thanks!

Yes I did extend my stack. You can find that in my 2022 season opener. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hpiT0sZsc7asZsY.html
With that set up with the fire brick and stack extension did you remove the baffle like Raleighsmoke did on his pecos?
Just curious .. what about the metal support rails for the ash pan? Were you able to build the bricks around them.. or did you have to remove them also? Thanx!

Sorry for the late reply. I didn't need to remove them. I just placed the bricks over them.

Good thing I read your comment as I was about to ask the same thing..haha I bought two boxes of the Rutland bricks and am considering removing the rails so it lowers the fire level..
Hi there nice touch,, how well has it worked? Much of a difference? Did you use adhesive to fix the bricks if so what one please as thinking of doing the same but need to make sure i got none toxic cement. Thanks 👍

I just placed them and they're staying put. Even when I clean them.

@@marcensor8778 Sorry meant to answer that. I think so. I need more time to gauge it. I'm working on my second cook right now with the bricks. I do love that I'm able to keep my coal base. That makes starting another log much easier.

Ok, after yesterday's cook, the stones hold onto lots of heat so as you see the temps drop the wood is sometimes nothing but coals left and yet the temp is still above 225. So yes, the heat retention is amazing so even if there is no flame, you're still holding heat and there are plenty of coals to start the next log. 😁👍

@@boomerbbq4444 ive just do e all mine and cooked a brisket after i had lined with fire brick in fire box plus cooking chamber and the difference was outstandind. Steady temps that needed little messing with my smoker throughout the whole cook so highly recommended 🔥🔥👌
How do you like the firebricks? What were the benefits to doing this? Thanks for sharing this information with us

I love it. There's two purposes. One, I hate having a grate under my coals. I lose my coal bed that way and 2,the bricks hold onto heat so it keeps the temp swings a lot more manageable when your wood is finished burning. It also keeps temp losses through the bottom at a minimum. 😁👍
Did you use the baffle plate or take it off boss?
How do i contact u to show you pics of my mods on the XD??
Took the ash pan out?? Or u left the ash pan in and cut the steel grates out?

I took the ash pan out completely. I'm no longer using it.
What type of saw did u use to cut the brick?

Sorry for the late reply. I use a chisel and tapped along a line until it broke. The wider the chisel the better.
Where did u get that rubber grimit you put the probe through?

You can find them on Amazon. Just search probe grommet.
It seems like the bricks restrict the air flow
What’s the brick size

Sorry for the late reply I'm not sure. Didn't measure them. They're standard size I believe. I showed a picture of the box they come in. The details might be in that box.
The volume on this was really low I could barely hear it. Just a tip for the future. Thanks

Where did you purchase your grill at
@boomerbbq4444

I got mine from Home Depot. It wasn't at my local one. It was from just out of state. You'll want to try and buy it online. They delivered mine for free. The store mine came from had 13 in stock at the time. I'm pretty sure that I bought mine in May. If you watch my first video. The day I published it was a day or so after I received it. They are becoming more popular so you'll want to look for them early in the year if you can't find one in stock right now. I hope this helps. 😁👍

Hi boomer i called 3 or 4 different home depot and they all told me the same the closet was like 100 miles from me in south Carolina and they don't do shipping because they dont have the freight so they told me that they are going to take it down off the website i really dont know or understand it

@@cynthiafranks8009 wow that sucks. Seemed they were getting pretty popular. They sold out the year I bought mine.
I really don't mean to be a stick in the mud, but sir, you have a sliding grill to pull out when loading the meat in, why didn't you pull it out!? nobody likes seeing bare spots on their meat where its seasoning should be + all of what's stuck on the grill now is gunna be shortening the lifespan of it however little that happens over time
Charcoal/fire/wood needs to breath from underneath so It can burn and perform at optimal temperatures. Oxygen/air underneath + ash needs to have a place to go for all that to happen.

I beg to differ. There are plenty of offset users that don't have grates under their fires and so far, I've had no problems maintaining my fires now that I have firebrick in my firebox.

@@boomerbbq4444 The fire bricks or ceramic bricks holds heat very well. Once the wood is lit, the next split lights up very fast.

I think this is too heavy for a firebox held by Chinese screws
