Adding cruise control to a 2005-2008 Ford Econoline E150 E250 E350 Van

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I just installed cruise control in my 2006 Ford E-350 Econoline and thought I'd share the process. This process is the same for all Econoline vans from 2005-2008 (the fly-by-wire system) so hopefully this will help someone out.
Parts:
$80 - Used steering wheel with cruise control buttons: goo.gl/XkwSCx
$85 - New clockspring with cruise control connector: amzn.com/B00AQZAIDI/?tag=syda...
Tools:
8mm socket
T50 Torx
2-Jaw puller
Screwdriver (long, thin Phillips is best)
I kept finding links to a full package for adding cruise control to a 2005-2008 Econoline van (like this one: www.thecruisecontrolstore.com/...) but every time I ordered one, they came back saying it was discontinued or no longer available. So instead I ended up getting a used steering wheel ($80 on Ebay - goo.gl/XkwSCx) and a new clockspring (part number 4C2Z14A664AA - $85 on Amazon - amzn.com/B00AQZAIDI/?tag=syda...) which turns out is all you need.
The one issue I ran into was that the steering wheel, despite coming off the same year vehicle, didn't have the correct connector. The clockspring accepts a 5-pin connector and mine had something else entirely. I was able to splice some wires using the 5-pin connector from my old clockspring and make it work, but thought I'd mention that so people know to make sure the steering wheel comes with the correct connector.
Here are the steps I took to replace it:
- Unplug battery at least 30 mins ahead of time to avoid any issues with the airbag deploying as you remove it
- Remove plugs from side of steering wheel
- Remove 2 x 8mm bolts
- Remove airbag and disconnect wires (black and yellow disconnects from airbag, other one from clockspring)
- Unscrew steering wheel bolt (50mm Torx)
- Remove steering wheel (need 2-jaw puller)
- Remove clockspring by removing the bottom cover or the steering column and pushing in the tabs on the back until it comes loose
- Remove ignition lock cylinder
- Disconnect all wires on old clockspring
- Install new clockspring (confirm it is correctly oriented)
- Remove yellow tab from clockspring
- Reinstall ignition lock cylinder
- Connect all lower wires on clockspring
- Reinstall steering column cover
- Reinstall steering wheel and tighten bolt
- Connect wires (black and yellow to back of airbag, other wire to clockspring)
- Reinstall airbag using 2 x 8mm bolts
- Reinstall plugs
- Go to dealer and get cruise control turned on (change "speed control present" from "no" to "yes"). This cost me $125 because even though it only took them 15 minutes to program it, the minimum programming time was 1 hour at $125/hr.
Hope this helps someone out.

You should mention on your video that if you are planning on installing cruise on your Ford van's that one should call a dealership and talk to the parts manager to see if your van is capable of having a steering wheel cruise control installed! It would have saved me over three hundred dollars, and I would have known that my van would not be capable of having the steering wheel cruise system! I finally figured out that I will have to purchase the Rostra cruise control system for the same amount of money and time I wasted!

Thank you again for this video. Success on my 2006 E-150. I also had 3 Ford dealerships and the salvage yard tell me this would not work. So relieved when it worked and much better on the long trips. The salvage guys showed me the trick of removing the wheel by banging all around it till it's loose. Important to keep the bolt in there loose so as to not pull it off fast and damage cables. Hard to find those steering wheels nowadays. I have an extra well-worn one from an 05 with cruise if someone needs one. Removing the ignition cylinder was needed as it make taking the cover off much easier and the clockspring has a connecter for the ignition. Good luck to other crazy people.

Just completed this mod today. New steering wheel only cost $50 on ebay; the most expensive item was the clock spring (over $100). Caveat: don't buy a gear puller from the auto parts store. Chances are it won't be up to the task. I wound up ordering a heavy duty one off Amazon and it did the job. Took it to the dealer for brake work and told them, "oh, by the way, the cruise control quit working recently." The service advisor called the next day and told me the brake work was done and the cruise control was now working. "It was never programmed properly into the computer," he said. Labor on the CC portion was $159. Another caveat: before taking it to the dealer I made sure my truck had a cruise control kill switch on the master cylinder. Thanks for this.

@@theidesofmarch314 I didn't have to do anything with the master cylinder aside from verifying that Ford installed a cruise control kill switch during manufacture. Did you happen to take a picture of the clock spring plugins? I purchased a new steering wheel with the cruise control buttons on it and a new clock spring part # AC2Z-14A664-C. Everything went well but sadly there is no place to plug in the cruise control plugs into. When you look at the clock spring that is facing you after installation has eight female pins. The original had a small plug in harness that is approximately 6" long with two wires connected to it that go to the horn, and the second set that comes from the back of the clock spring ( yellow lead ) goes to the airbag. So is there a plug in harness that replaces the original and encompasses all the pins and gives a place to plug in the two lead harnesses from the cruise control buttons?

I have a couple general question before I dive into this: 1. After searching for a 2005-2008 E350 steering wheel with cruise, it appears as though ford didn't make steering wheels with the cruise buttons for those years. So does that mean everyone who is getting these steering wheels with cruise control buttons is getting them from 2009 + models? 2. The original poster said he picked up the new clock spring because it had cruise but then when he put on his new steering wheel with cruise control buttons, it didn't have the matching connector for that clock spring so he had to splice on his original connector from the old clock spring. Does that mean the original clock spring would work with the new steering wheel with cruise control buttons?

Just tackled the job on adding the FACTORY cruise on a 2004 E350 as I think most aftermarket Cruise Control Units suck. You'll need: - Steering Wheel w/ cruise (some F150 models seem to be compatible) - Steering wheel Clockspring /w cruise 4C2Z-14A664-AA - New Steering wheel bolt N807493-S100 - Cruise servo F8UZ-9C735-AA (discontinued) , however, you can use pretty much every servo/gear unit from most Fords 1993 and up (check pictures) but still have to find a salvaged Electronics module. See kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKmirbKbZ9K0ebA.html for details! - Cruise Cable to hook up into Throttle (discontinued), found a NOS part, but shouldn't be too hard to find at junkjards. Dunno about other models with the 5.4 Engine and if they fit. - Cruise Servo bracket F8UZ-9C736-AB (discontinued), should be easy to find at Junkjards/Wreckers or can be custom made if you're into metal working. Has 2 8mm bolts for mounting below coolant reservoir and 2 for clamping on the servo - And around 1h of your time Spend aorund 250 Dollars including shipment to Germany for everything. I think that's worth it!

I've never unplugged the battery to remove an airbag. Its not going to go off... That's just superstition. I should add you should still disconnect the battery at home so you don't trigger the airbag light. If you have a proper scan tool you can just reset the light if it comes on. There is nothing more annoying than dealing with a customer whos setting got erased because you disconnected the battery.

@@spidennis I stuck my camera under the master cylinder and snapped a few photos, then compared them with photos found on the web for 2007 Ford F350 cruise control kill switch brake master cylinder. Sorry, I don't have part numbers but I ordered the clock spring from Amazon and simply entered my vehicle particulars prior to searching. The wheel was located on Ebay by searching for "2007 Ford F350 E350 steering wheel." Hardest part of the whole process was pulling the old steering wheel off. It's been a year or more now and cruise control still works perfectly.
