Tips for realistic bus-routes. In every city I've lived with public transportation this is how it works: The idea is pretty simple, a bit like you already did, a bus line goes back and fourth from one side of town to the other. except for one little detail. Most bus lines where I live (in scandinavia) would pass by near some kind of central hub, like the train station or some downtown central square or both, something like that. So that people who come into the town by train can easily get to anywhere in town by bus/tram/whatever. But It also helps of course in real life that bus stations and train stations often are combined into a single unit, that also don't need to be so huge as they are in this game. Bus lines usually also branch out from the center, so that maybe a stretch in downtown will share a few stops between several different lines. That is how it's done realistically, and practically.

I guess it is different in every city, but your main point is correct - usually bus routes go nearby important city hubs, but you then also have smaller routes that then cover the districts where people just live to bring them to the important hubs. Here in Vienna we have so many different bus routes and tram lines... and they all interlink each other :)

@@Boonatix Yeah. In in really big cities it starts to get really messy. Especially as the suburbs or even parts of downtown starts to become sort of their own cities with their own local bus routes and their own "regional" connections to other suburbs. In Stockholm there are so many different major hubs that various bus routes are attached to. And figuring out the system for the bus traffic was a mystery I could never solve when I lived there. And I used to commute by bus for a while. Because while the metro and and commute trains are pretty centered on downtown stockholm, it's generally by bus you get 'sideways' from one suburb to the next. And also how you get around in the bigger suburbs. Also in small towns here you don't really get local bus routes, instead the more regional bus routes will have a few stops on their way in or out of the town center. That's the usual way for towns with less than say 10.000 people.

This is true but when applying it to cities you need to take into account the trips people want to do. I game people go from residential to comercial/industrial and back, while in real life people also want to travel inside residential zones. So while creating the routes you need to make sure each ones crosses multiple zoning types for people to use it

@@pausi9664 Of course, but that is generally what naturally happens with this realistic way of creating routes, they either start or stop in some suburb, strip mall complex or industrial park you typically find on the outskirts of a city and then pass close by all kinds of places and the the city center on the way out to another suburb/strip mall/industrial park/whatever on the other end of the city. And at the same time people from outside the city can also commute to these places.

It's also extremely important that lines not only cross each other but also SHARE STOPS at that crossing point so that people can easily change lines. That's something he nearly completely neglects while creating his lines.

I think the main reason why people are complaining about your bus routes is because the shelters easily serve a few blocks at a time and when you place too many too close together, they won’t know which one to take. The routes being close together aren’t very efficient either. Sure they’re CONVENIENT but they feel more comfortable walking to their destination rather than taking a bus. Maybe adding less stops and less shelters would be more ideal.

The neighbourhoods are quite low density so it doesn't really make walking to destinations easy to be honest. Most people would rather catch the bus

For me, it's easier to place ONE bus stop per route, create the route and (as the last step) add stops to this route. I don't have to remember and to imagine the whole route - I just create the route and add stops after its creation.

I think a 6 lane down the middle will help a lot with your traffic issues and have some 4 lanes east to west.

Finally, a KZreadr who knows how to design a freaking bus system! I hate the nonsensical loops so many of these people do! Thank you for designing something logical!

  • @robdaviesprogm

@Boonatix the word "knowledge" doesn't appear anywhere in my post. One-way Loops (or perhaps more aptly, circles), like many KZreadrs design, are a stupid way to implement a bus system. What if I want to go 1 stop in the direction the bus isn't running? Do I have to go all the way around the line, needlessly taking up a seat? Also, a lot of KZreadrs don't implement proper connectivity between their lines (stops on both lines right near each other), nor does the placement of their lines make any logical sense a lot of the time.

@@Boonatix Loops are the most idiotic thing one can do regarding to bus lines (or any means of public transport for that matter). They barely exist in real life for a reason. Have you ever even looked at a map of bus routes in major cities outside the US? And if the exist they almost always have a corresponding loop in the opposite direction. Because, you know, people HATE going in the wrong way.

Bus routes can be more efficient if you keep them more straight and direct... no need for so many stops and having them go in circles :) Regarding traffic volume, that is kinda like always there no matter what... even when there is actually not much traffic right now. That is because of the morning and evening times when people commute to and back from work. You can build more sophisticated crossings with different lanes to improve the flow... I am working on some tutorials there on my channel :) Otherwise, really great city project and keep it up!

Loving the series! keep it up, looks good!! 💪🏼💪🏼 Maybe u can add the library to high school and uni so people will get better education and can have jobs that are empty. If u make the special industries it decrease the industry bar and gives jobs too. And the welfare office helps with the high crime... dont forget the updates for the internet! Remember taxis are private bussiness 🙈🤭
