If u building a room 14×14 and using blocks how do you calculate to know how many blocks you would need

  • @ConstructionEd

You would calculate the surface area of the proposed wall (Length X height) and divide that number by surface area of the block.

@@ConstructionEd say the wall is 14×8,and a block is 8" high and 16" in length, how you calculate to get the amount of blocks for that side of wall . thanks in advance

  • @ConstructionEd

First determine the area of the wall multiply the 14' by the 8' that equals 112 sqft Then calculate the area of the blocks blocks - 8'' x 16'' equals 128 sq inches and that converts to 0.888 square feet per block. so then divide the wall area by the blocks area and you get teh number of blcoks = 112 sqft divided by 0.888 sqft equals 126 blocks But remember to account for the mortar joints also.

So there is 8,8th in an inch and if you get something like 10/8 it doesn’t work because there is no 10 over 8 on the tape measure so you subtract 8 from 10 and that’s how he got 2/8 but the 4 he just added 1 to 3 and I’m guessing if you ever get a number that goes over an 8th or a 16th you’d take the inch and add 1 I’m not sure about that part

Dylan - Good explanation. What Joe was talking about was simplifying the fraction of 3 10/8 - that is considered an improper fraction and it is equal to 4 1/8. If you have 10 8th's that is the same as saying 1 whole and 2 8th's

Can you explain the solution for the step : 92 5/8 - (7/8) = 91 6/8? I got a bit confused on how you got your answer here can you break it down?

That is hard to do in a comment thread. But, when you subtract 7/8th you can think of it as two steps. First remove the 5/8 and you are left with 92. But you still have to remove the remaining 2/8th. Since 92 is the same as 91 8/8th, you can remove the final 2/8th and you are left with 91 6/8

Make sure you find the LCD and get the fractions to match, in this case 5/8 and 7/8 are already setup. Next subtract 5-7, which gives you -2. So now you have a fraction that's -2/8 which can be simplified as -1/4. Now you can't have a negative fraction so take that negative away by subtracting 1 from 92 which leaves you with 91. Now you have that 1/4 which used to be negative, so flip it to 3/4. Don't question it lol. You can apply this to say, 92 5/8 - 6/8 -> LCD is good, subtract 5-6, which is -1. You're left with -1/8. Get rid of the negative by subtracting 1 from 92. Then flip the 1/8 to 7/8. The answer would be 91 7/8" Let's say you have 92 5/8" - 91 7/8". First subtract the whole numbers, 92 - 91 = 1. Next check the LCD for the fractions, they are already good. Now to the same as before, 5-7 = -2 so you have -2/8 or -1/4 simplified. Get rid of the negative by subtracting 1 from our whole number, which would be 1 - 1 = 0, then we flip the fraction from 1/4 to 3/4 since we removed the negative. So the answer to this would be we're left with 3/4" after our cut. Kind of a weird cut IMO LOL.

Brian, 1/2 is equal to 8/16. If you divide 8 into the top (numerator) it is 1 and if you do the same to the bottom (denominator) it is 2. so that is 1/2. You can also search for the term simplifying fractions, there are a bunch of good youtube videos about it.

You can pull 16 out of 21 once which equals and inch and you are left with 5/16
