    I really like these kinds of videos. I like all the different perspectives. I also think most credit card KZreadrs are team cash back and I also think most beginners or entry level gamers are team cash back but……. I think the travel game is just so much more interesting with all the complications and customizing. I’ve been tempted by team cash back many times but for me, my main motivation is to make sure my little boy is well traveled and also, well, I was a sailor so it’s in my blood to travel. Great video RJ - I love your style.

    This is why i like this channel. I don’t travel. Personally, i was a over the road driver for many years, I’m traveled out. I run my business with cash back credit cards. My cash back each month will generally cover 1 utility bill. That’s useful to me. The majority of credit card videos is about travel, and as a fan of the credit card scene I enjoy watching them sometimes, but I’m only looking for practical daily use cards.

    Travel does get the cooler redemptions and more popular cards. I think a lot of people ignore it’s also about how you travel and redeem. I do like going places but when I do my goal has been to not pay cash. I’d rather get more use of the points than one major fancy trip.

    Your points are so valid and it all depends on where you’re at in life. Also, cash back is extremely tangible whereas travel is based more on how involved an individual wants to get in the credit card game. I love having both options so when I want to travel I can and I can use the cash back for things I need on a daily basis. Thanks as always for the video.

    I disagree with this sentiment. Getting involved in the cash savings game, one can easily do the math and find out that the stuff that they purchase with points, you end up spending a premium because of the limited partners they have. It would always be cheaper to simply get a cheaper alternative, whether its a cheaper hotel room, car rental, airline, etc... and get cash back on that smaller portion rather than spending more.

    Man this was a great video. Spittin pure FACTS! For me a hybrid system works best: mostly cashback cards with a few low AF travel cards that offer flexible currency & good insurance/protections. This is my current setup: CSP + Citi Premier for travel, dining, gas & grocery CIU + Paypal + Discover Miles for my "catch all" category Amazon + Target Redcard + Lowes for specific 5x shopping In future the Venture X may replace my CSP & Premier.

    I would love to see that 5% back on everything video. The key point you made for me is that yes, you earn more by maximizing travel rewards, but you are earning more on things you probably wouldn’t use at all if the rewards weren’t available. Luxury may be what you want sometimes, but over time you will spend more than you would if you focused on economy travel. The FHR program (for example) can save you $300+ per day at a really good hotel over the on paper pricing. And that is before you count the hotel credits and the free third or fourth nights. Sometimes you might want that. But you could also stay at a $100 per night hotel and still have a great vacation by spending your time and money doing stuff outside of the hotel, which is usually the point of the trip anyway. I go back-and-forth between looking for travel rewards and cashback. I definitely get value from travel rewards, but there needs to be a balance.

  • @RJFinancial

    @RJFinancial

    Жыл бұрын

    Video is on the list. I agree with the point as well. FHR is a good example. I liked the program but since it's not something I would normally pay for, it's hard to say I get $300 of value from it.

  • @michaelkeaton32

    This is the video I've been wanting to see. I jumped into the pool with the expensive travel cards (I'm military, so I don't have to pay the AFs at least), and now I'm realizing, for me, I enjoy cash back better. I don't think travel is wrong or whatever, but I just think of the time value of money - a dollar today is worth more than a dollar in the future. There's also the fact that, for me, my points just sit there doing nothing. I think if I would cash them out, I at least can get a couple percentage points on them, or even spend them on anything that I want. I guess you could boil it down to flexibility; that's what I like about cash back.

  • @RJFinancial

    @RJFinancial

    Жыл бұрын

    All good points. I'm also committing to cashing all my points out once per year, likely end of year. It's a safer play as you don't want to leave them with the bank for too long. And might as well use them for stuff. Flexibility is a key to your point

    I’m with you, I don’t fly for vacations as I don’t need to, live centrally located and Florida, Texas, Chicago, Virginia, etc…are all within driving distance for my family, making it cheaper also. We get a lot of Marriott hotel points from work (regional travel job) so that’s always free. Other than gas, dining and events that’s all it costs us. The CSR gives me 1.5x back towards dining so that makes the Chase trifecta worth it covering gas and dining (we spend a lot on travel dining). I ala cart the other cards based on what get us the most cash or credits back (Amazon, US Bank cash+, Amex BCP, and a few others). Amex green, gold and Platinum gives us no value that we don’t do better elsewhere. Premium travel to me is a waste.

    Great video RJ!!! I value travel more than cash back but you're definitely right, just depends on how you travel, also, when you look at it, most of the good cash back cards are with no annual fee, which make it easy to apply for. I used to be cash back but I saw the potential to travel biz/first class so I switch to travel instead. My first few months of accumulating miles/points, my wife and I used it to travel to EU for biz class and after that, we're hooked. Good point though. Appreciate the update RJ!!!

    I have historically been team cash back. I think that if you are more of an economy traveler the points game is less interesting. Cash airfare is pretty inexpensive and you have lots of flexibility. If you want to fly up in front *and* would be willing to pay more to do so the value of the points game can be enormous. Long term I think optionality is what to go for. Cards like the double cash or savor one are great cash back cards but they can also fuel a points based setup

I will get the Citi Premier in a month and test out their ecosystem so I could get an idea of all of the Big 4, but in a couple years I want to be loyal to 1-2 issuers. Been to 6 new countries in 2022 all on cards with little cash, its a lot of fun. I tallied up my bank bonuses, by next month I will be at $9040 in bank bonuses opened only 14 accounts. Cash is great, can spend it anywhere, invest it, or pay for travel with it! For me, one of the reasons I prefer cash back is that I travel so much for my job that when I go on personal travel, I can likely pay for it with points from the work travel. So getting additional points has limited value for me. I do like the perks that make this travel more enjoyable (so lounge access mainly) so want something that gives me at least Priority Pass. And Amex has made me really like the Centurion and Delta lounges. So if Amex can give me a good retention offer I'll keep the Platinum though focus on cash back for the rest of my credit cards.

Wish that the Amex cash back redemption was at least 1 cpp rather than 0.7 cpp. Chase sapphire cards also didn’t make enough value for me to continue beyond year 1.

I have the Citi Premier which I mostly got for the signup bonus because I had a lot of spend on the immediate horizon and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to earn a signup bonus, and I tried playing with the Citi travel portal and I didn't like it all. I heard that they're revamping their travel portal so that could change but for now it wasn't a good experience.

What has me leaning more towards cash back is the fact that you can't use points for travel whenever you want, its based on whats available. Won't lie, its been hard to use my amex points the way I want to. I did finally use some points to book some one way flights to Montreal last week. But cash back is way simpler
