The adaptive cycle is a heuristic model developed by C.S. Holling for understanding macro processes of change in ecosystems, however, the adaptive cycle is equally applicable to any complex adaptive system. It can be used to identify structural patterns in both ecosystems as well as social systems as they go through nonlinear processes of change.
Systems change is about changing complex adaptive systems - i.e. living systems - so understanding these inherent processes of change in living dynamical systems will be of great value. The model describes how complex adaptive systems evolve in terms of four phases, with these four phases being exploitation, conservation, release, and reorganization.

Thanks for all the reviews.
Hi all. It's an interesting thought to apply this to economic systems too. Including reserve currency cycles and the emerging didgital asset class. XRP the standard. Enjoy the ride.

Hi! Are there any books or resources that we can read to go deeper into this topic? I work with Peter Checkland's Soft Systems Methodology(SSM), I'd love to read up into possible applications of these ideas in my field. I wrote my master thesis on the topic and have plans for a doctorate on 2 years. I want to read up as much as possible. Any help???

I don't know if you already got the information you wanted but you can take a look at Holling's work: - Holling, Crawford S. "Understanding the complexity of economic, ecological, and social systems." Ecosystems 4.5 (2001): 390-405. - Gunderson, Lance H. Panarchy: understanding transformations in human and natural systems. Island press, 2001.

Feels like it, doesn't it? Despite the amount of resources our nations can mobilise, it feels like there is too much self interest, petty fiefdoms in different fields and cultural rigidity in the system to effectively approach climate and ecological crises.
I feel like the US is between Conservation and Release right now...
