Thank you so much for this supply list! I'm not a spaceship builder, but the easy of use of the styrene was catching my attention as I use cardboard, paperboard, and a little bit of solid wood to make doll houses and the like, but with the damage to my spine these materials are incredibly difficult to work with. Most days I can't stand the amount of hunching over, making the same cut again and again and again to cut the whole way through making projects take literal ages. The fact that styrene scores and then snaps had me doing a happy dance.

9:24 I hope those were Samarium Cobalt Magnets, (high temperature magnets) because Neodymium ones will lose there magnetic field from the heat, and we all know Neodymium magnets are expensive.

Totally agreed. Imo, thats how creative minds are born. And creative minds is the one going to push humanity further at a correct direction. It help and let us think on how to develop ideas, concept, techniques or whatever. In my country, education are born by making us say A is A. Well, nothing wrong with that. Except that we cannot express our creativity, and develop properly. It limits our imagination. Adam way of education is a perfect way of teaching. It will make us think out of the box, be more creative, and the limitless possibilities that we can achieve.

I love the constant tension in these videos between the idea of "this is simple and approachable and anyone can do it", and the reality of your current shop. Like "Personally I like to use this solid gold spudging tool that was hand-made for me by the head of Weta Workshop. But uh, you can also just use a popsicle stick"

Great thing about the way Adam works: he'l show you the little tricks and cheap tools that make everything work. A nice vacuform machine goes for ~$1k, but now we know (thanks to Adam) that you can build one yourself using common tools and items that can be acquired from any hardware store. Yeah, you can do things the hard way, but why do that when an inexpensive trip to a beauty supply store will net you the exact thing you need? Yeah, he has an awe-inspiring shop. Most of the tools he uses aren't all that fancy, and the really nice tools are highly specialized to make a certain task a little bit easier/faster (like a disc sander). Even his materials aren't often very exotic, most of this video was just using normal styrene sheet and weld glue.

Won't the heat eventually destroy the magnets? Wouldn't a mechanical lock thus work better?

I would gladly watch 90 more minutes with Adam Savage building stuff.

If you change the two switches out of the vacuum former for a rotary switch you will be able to do that faster. Switch left: heater on. Switch center: machine off. Switch right: vacuum on. The heater and vacuum will never be on at the same time.

He said he built it to be a replica of a former owned and operated by a colleague/teacher he admired, he probably wants it to retain that form even at the cost of function.

You could swap the switch to a three position toggle for: 1. Heating On 2. Off 3. Vacuum On Would help to ensure you never blow a fuse... Use the other switch as a primary power.... Just a thought

I was thinking the same! Or even just an ON-OFF for power, and an ON-ON to switch between heater and vacuum.

Some years back I bought my first resin kit - a Firefly "Serenity" ..it took me THREE years .......watching your one day builds Adam ...I could CRY !

I'm sure i spotted the 'Universal Greebly' take pride of place on the top. Can't be a true space ship model without one.

I love Adam he is one of those people we need to protect in this world at all cost! I love that he gets so excited to show everyone everything! He reminds me of a kids who drew a house on paper for the first time and gets so excited that he needs to run off and show the family what he made. Such a pure kind soul with so much knowledge! Adam you really are a gift to this world!

I think he mentioned it was purpose built to replicate exactly his early mentor's vacuum former - so he probably just replicated the switch configuration exactly.

@@Gaolii there's replicating, and there's seeing what could be improved and doing it. A DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) Center Off switch would make it easier to use. Up for heat, center for off, down for vacuum.

Thanks Adam. Great video. I've been making spaceship models out of plastic scrap for about 20 years and I've learned a thing or two from you. Printers are a wonderful source for oddly shaped parts. Electronic devices are not only a good source of material but also for LEDs, cables and switches of all kinds. I have never tried a vacuum machine but it is a good challenge for this coming year. The nail files I have used a lot. They are cheap and flexible and give a great touch. Normally with 3/4 types of glue, my set of blades and files and a soldering iron I solve practically everything. Any piece of plastic wherever it comes from can be part of a spaceship since imagination is the only limit.

Mr. Savage you have become a terrific teacher in your time.

Then you are missing out on like 80% of the information contained in the show. I admit that I was hooked by Adam, knowing him from Mythbusters and subscribed. Once I did though, I went and watched all the other builds done by other great model builders and I was way more impressed. No offense to Adam, buddy you are awesome and I know you know that lol You don't need me or anyone else to tell you that. If ya do, well I think a therapist might be a good idea. There are at least 4 or 5 other builders and 2 of them are women, which I think is sweet. They show you how to make things from water effects for dioramas, weathering techniques on Gundam models and ships, to large scratch built lights shaped like letters. You are seriously selling yourself short and kinda being trendy if you only subscribe to watch, as you see it, the star of a show. It's cool to get hooked but don't let it stop there. Explore the show. Watch the other vids as I did. Trust me you will learn some cool stuff and there are tons of moments of silence and just building. If that's what you like. Just subscribing to watch only Adam is kinda like taking a beat up old car to a famous hot rod shop, then requiring only the owner of that shop to build it. Not to mention that if you only watch one person build something, you will invariably only learn what that one person knows. Watch multiple builders and you will expand your knowledge base way more than you could just by watching one. All that said, I do love the one day builds and I agree that watching Adam build for 90+ minutes in real time would not be boring. I grew up on Mythbusters and watching Adam build was kinda the whole thing. Not to say Jamie was useless on the show, I should be punched in the face for just typing it, but Adam was more entertaining. Jamie works like I do, in silence. To the people who say Adam needs to have his own show and do more videos, more frequently; can you not see the gold band on his finger?! That means he is married and he most likely has a day job that does not include making videos for tested all day every day. He is only human, so give him a break and learn to enjoy what ya got. Rather than force your will into existence. I really wish the concept of manifest destiny had never been uttered way back when.

@@LordDrast420 True but let's be honest... you couldn't very well use 3d printed miniatures for film work because up close shots reveal too many imperfections, the 'grain' of the print, the fairly low resolution vertical axis... I think if you're going for this kind of look, 3D printers would have a hard time creating comparable results.

@@MK-lk7nc FDM printers, no, no you could not. Buuuuttt there are some admittedly very expensive SLA printers that can create anything you can think of, down to the near micro level. Once you paint whatever you've printed, I'd be willing to bet you wouldn't see any imperfections

There's something therapeutic about watching Adam tinker around and make things from nothing. I could watch for hours.

I love Adam savage. Hes one of my all time favorite people on TV. Hes real. Hes funny. Hes smart. More kids need to have guys like him as their favorite entertainers instead of some of the trash on TV. Hes inspired so many I'm sure. I'm really excited for his new show!!!

Adam's Savage one day builds are my 2019 Bob Ross paintings. It's like meditation.

When I was in highschool I was in an engineering class (really just an advanced metals shop class) and my teacher suggested I look at a design/modeling program at one of the local colleges. I was of the mindset that I wanted to be an actual engineer and went down that path, just to change gears a few years later and end up in business and finance. I'm 41 now and think I'd probably be much happier had I followed my shop teacher's guidance. Being in his mid 40s at the time he saw the kind of work I gravitated towards in the shop and had the life experience to know there's more to life than a sizable paycheck. He was the smartest teacher I had (so much of what I leaned from him had applications far beyond that classroom), I just wish I had been smart enough to listen.

21:05 [talking about radiators/other movies and then suddenly remember "I can show this"] "Wait right there ..." LIke I'm going anywhere else while watching this. But I love that impromptu realization that he's got exactly what he's talking about and then runs off camera to get it. Makes me feel like I'm actually there, having a conversation with him. God I wish my teachers back in the day had this much enthusiasm.

I love the grin that accompanied the disclosure that "obscene" chocolates were made.

Listening to you talk about building the vacuum former reminds me of my brother telling me how when he teaches new blacksmiths many of their early projects are building their own tools. The world changes but many things stay the same.

Adam Savage is one of this world's most humble and gifted creators. I've always loved the way he just jumps at opportunities to create, and then we all get to marvel at his ability to bring materials to life in ways only Adam can.

I love how you emphasize the simplicity of the tools and materials needed so anyone can get started if they really want. Now I just need to upgrade from building in my closet to something with a little more space :)

Got to love how Adam can mix together creativity and science so well. Never a dull moment.

The best thing about Adam Savage building videos is that he just tells you every little secret he collected throughout years of experience in order to improve and facilitate your project. He is an amazing communicator and professor. Thank you for another great video.

This reminds me a lot of the process I used to create my daughters Valentines box this year. She wanted a unicorn. So I made one with Foam Board, Exacto knifes, and hot glue. She wanted it to be a robot so we added googly eyes, painted it silver, and I used Rainbow yarn for the mane and tail. I put a side access door with a pull tab and velcro retention. I placed bevels on the inside so the door sat flush. It looked like a silver, rainbow haired Trojan Horse. Obviously she had the best box.

I'd take a KZread channel solely with this, please.

This is another one of those videos that no matter how long it's been on the internet, it will always be relevant. This is such a cool process and it's something I really want to do some day. I'm constantly going through the videos on this channel for inspiration, ideas, and knowledge of different processes and Adam, you never disappoint. This is actually the kind of thing I pop on in the garage when I'm working on a car or building something. It's either maker vids or try to let KZread mix music for me. The latter rarely works well, it'll get stuck on one particular artist after awhile and then randomly jump into a genre I don't care for or have ever listened to.

I've been sniffing glue for decades, very cool presentation. Nice work.

I Love building models. I have watched this and the previous styrene scratch build video 10 times and it never gets old.

you have indeed broken that out before adam, you used it for totoro's eyes!

im really enjoying ur one day builds im from germany and im a precision-mechanic ( mould making ) im working in the range of 0.001 mm so if feel like i can say yes you are right in terms of hiding crimes in metal is hard :D greetings from germany

loved every minute of this. I'm into 3D modeling on the computer and I learn a lot from watching these videos. Even if you work digitally, there's a certain cleverness and creativity that can be learned from real world builders like Adam. He's a true professional when it comes to knowing each material needed for the job, his foresight and preparation in what he's going to build, down to his use of dialect in teaching others his process. Even his rushed, crazy-scientist moments of inspiration give great insight into why he's one of the greats. I learn a lot from your character and artistry Adam and I look forward to watching you create more.

Thank you for everything you all do for the community. Inspiration to just build something out of anything.

Yeah, I guess you're referencing his mini series The Assembler. Very good slow TV.

@@klarkolofsson Yup, The Reassembler to be exact, but his other older shows are also really good and interesting too like Man Lab & James May's Toy Stories for example.

Great video....but why do so many KZread video producers think filler music has to BLAST the whole neighborhood?

How long are you going to make us wait for 'Scratch Building 103'? Please please please Adam! MORE! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this series! If there are others that are better than you (as you say) have them on your show! Maybe a bit of a competition!
