Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Overengineered Bottle Opener!

Ғылым және технология

The amazing Laura Kampf visits Adam's workshop for a One Day Build collaboration! Their plan: design and build an overengineered bottle opener that can slam the cap off of a standard glass soda bottle. After much trial and error, behold the Kampf bottle opener!

    Dear Mr Adam Savage, I know I am late to this video and you have much more important things to do then answer silly questions on KZread. But the mill that you're using in your shop looks like an old Bridgeport or Sharp? I have not noticed a name plate so it could be anything. I am looking to buy an older machine myself to tinker in the garage and I was curious to see what the king of tinkering used. I truly appreciate your craftsmanship. Sincerely, Jeff from Western Pennsylvania

    Random observation: I think its interesting that at 44:04 (the final test) Adam doesn't fully blink during the *pop*, nor does he express exaggerated anticipation of the impact. He sees the complete action, steady and uninterrupted and I think that's kind of a beautiful insight into the skills he's developed over a life of building and refining amazing machines.

    +Jordan Truesdell Yeah I agree, it brings me such joy to see him work, educate, and interact with other very talented people! On a loosely related note to your post, it's ever so slightly possible (although improbable) that Adam, or someone born recently, will live to 150 or 200 years old. It would require truly unfathomable advances in medicine, biotech, and genetics in the near-to-mid-future, but I think it's technically possible to prolong human life significantly beyond today's average. There are quite a few organisms, some of them quite complex, that live hundreds of years, and scientists are studying their biology intensively. Realistically though, no one will live to see 200 years for quite a long time, but you never know what scientific breakthroughs are potentially around the corner. ;)

    So, can we get a maker TV show similar to Chopped (but less cookie cutter)? Like have seasoned makers/builders/inventors build projects with either limited and/or required materials. See what they can build with limited resources, out of their element. Honestly, I kind of just want to see what Adam would do in an unfamiliar shop where he can't have one of those, "OOOH! I've got just the thing!" moments before grabbing a package of assorted hedgehog spines and having to decide which color to use.

    André Berger Yea, I just had to look up the connection, but I remember the US version "Junkyard Wars" back in the early 2000s. I miss that kind of TV, even though I remember it being pretty cheesy. I think a revamped version of the concept would work well these days with the Maker Movement. There was also a Jim Hensen Creature Shop competition show more recently I only ever saw one season of, but remember it had a lot of time spent showing what, how, and why the competitors were making the mechanics and finishes on their projects.

    It's funny that Adam refers to inches as 'English'. For small measurements most people in the UK use metric. As far as I know, only America still widely use imperial measurements. Talking of UK and measuring things, we are so messed up, we use millimeters, centimeters and meters for smaller measurements but measure distance in miles. We put liters of fuel in our cars while buying a pint of milk :'). A bag of sugar is weighed in grams but our bodyweight is in stone. Depending on what we are measuring, we use completely different units :')

  • @DoctorZisIN

    @DoctorZisIN

    5 жыл бұрын

    There's also a mix here in the US. We measure Engine displacement in cc's or liters. Food content of fat or sugar is measured in grams. Medication weight is also in grams or milligrams. Memory storage is counted in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes and so on. Sound is measured in decibels. Electricians use metric for power and work units, like watts, volts, amperes, etc. We use lumens for light and kilowatt/hr for home electricity usage. In sports we run 100 meter dash, or a 5K race, 400m relay and so on. But road travel distances are in miles, your height and weight is in inches and pounds, engine output is HP. The depth of a pool is measured in feet but it's length in meters. We don't use pints or stone, but we do use quarts and gallons. Our tons are metric.

    @Grafight23 IDK if you are really from the US or just don't understand the difference between imperial and metric. We measure engines in CI (cubic inches) or liters (CC is the same as liters). Computer memory, sound decibel, electric units, lumens are not metric measurements (if you know the imperial versions then please inform me). And we do use pints, I'll bet you've bought a pint of ice cream before.

    I must say I do like this format. Not overly polished, but with just enough camera work to pull it together. Props to the crew, especially the lighting for the slow mo shot, and of course a shout out to the sound guy...you know the guy that if he/she has done their job correctly, you don't realize they did anything at all.....ask me how I know.... :) - Cheers

    Two of my favorite makers at it again making a thoroughly goofy but beautiful thing, and this time with Laura wearing the jacket Crafts With Ellen made for her and with Simone making an appearance? My day is made!

    *Useless fact:* The word "habit" comes from the Latin word "habere" which means "to have" a habit is, by literal definition, a thing that you have.

    Lets hope OSHA never shows up. This is technically a work studio for the channel and has to abide by OSHA standards for workplace safety

    This is one of the best colabs I've. I've subbed to Laura and seeing if there's many more of these on your channel. It takes things to another level than when covid attacked.
