Adam Savage Reacts To His First One Day Build!
Ғылым және технология
Adam sits down to watch and comment on his very first Tested One Day Build, the Blade Runner Blaster Box ( • One Day Builds: Adam S... ). Watching it for the first time in SEVEN YEARS, Adam reveals how the ODB series originated, exclaims over the many changes he's made to his shop since 2013, and provides many other insights into this build and the techniques he was using at the time. As Adam says, it's almost like attending a reunion!

It would be a really good idea to show what the box looks like today as compared to what it was back then.
Fantastic, loved seeing the shop evolution as my garage constantly evolves. But SHOW us the case from TODAY already!! ;)

Wooooow, everything about the shop is so different! It doesn't feel like it's been that long. Time flies!

This is why I want to see an updated google street view of the inside of his shop. It’s really bare in the current one and I feel like an updated one would be pure eye-candy.

It looked more minimal than it is now, but at the same time it looks organized. Everything is at its place.
I always loved the box creation ODB's. This, the microscope, the beaver. I love them because you really get to see the thought process in action, the design process, the build process, all the way to the weathering and finishing touches like stickers. Such complete end-to-end builds. We need another box build soon!!!
This was possibly my favourite builds to watch ... because of its simplicity but yet how perfect Adam made it seem.

Also one of my first Test videos and I got to watch it around the same time :)
We asked for it, didn’t we. Reaction videos are so weirdly fascinating. Plus it’s interesting to me because this video more or less got me into spending a fortune on tools… er I mean got me into making stuff.
I would not be upset if there were more Adam reaction videos. This was a nice, chill, and yet informative video. It adds extra commentary that wouldn't have been thought of during the video itself.
Z axis storage is exactly where my focus has been lately. My shop is getting more and more full.
As with all things relative especially time...I distinctly remember exactly where I was in my life's journey while viewing the first ODB. Thanks Tested for the nostalgia...much aloha from Maui!
Really loved this being opened up to all of us. So many "watching my old videos" videos are just "oh my god, did I really do that?? I was so cringy! Turn it off, I hate myself ugh!!" but of course Adam wouldn"t be like that. So refreshing and charming.
I just rewatched this old one day build video the other day! It’s one of my all time favorites and made me a huge fan of Adam and tested
thanks for this retrospective with commentary. I love to hear the rationale for the design/construction and it's cool to hear about how the shop has evolved. more time capsules like this, please.
I love that time has flown so fast the Adam thinks it’s been seven years and it’s actually been NINE.

You mean 2020, 2021, and 2022 weren't all the same year??
I always liked Mr Savage for his brains and humour, and now I Love him because he gives a crap about nature and less chemicals! Legend!!!
Yes, do more of these! My favorite tested videos are always the "Adam talking about stuff he cares about" videos
That video was the first thing I ever saw from Tested and have been watching ever since. I don't think I ever realized that was the very first one day build!
I believe that was the project that introduced Tested to me and that hooked me on - one day builds are my secret pleasure. Thank you Adam and team!
haha. I just watched this for the first time last night.. ive been binging these all week.

"Patina of Enthusiasm" - I love this concept.
It is great to see you watch yourself make something that you still love so much. I think that is one of the first videos I had seen on tested.
I love this video, as well as the old ones about the Blade Runner blaster. It was super entertaining to watch Adam's reaction to it.
That was nearly 10 years ago? Times really flies! I really loved all the box builds and have an old steamer trunk I want to replicate using stuff I learned from them.
I tend to rewatch ALL of your "One Day Build" videos at least four times a year.
Adam, you hit the nail on the head with the remark on how you do measurements. It doesn't happen enough that we look at the user for an indication on how he/she might want to use the object or interface. So, please keep doing exactly that, and keep teaching people to do it that way. We make things for people, why not ask people how they want to use things?
I remember this...can't believe how long I've been watching this channel.
Always enjoy the one day builds. I go back and watch them over and over
I've been Skimming through the channels old vids from the oldest while enjoying this. Even more of a blast! Didn't realize I'd been watching this channel for over a decade. :-) Lol, Loved the Lego builds!
Thank you Adam so much for showing me and telling me about the brass I'd never given it that much thought but I will from now on. Thanks again Adam have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry!
Loved watching you watch your amazing builds 👍🏻
Fun to see how the shop has evolved. Must be fun to watch yourself figure out the details of a project you've loved for years now.
I've been watching since tested started, and it's been so cool to see how everything and everyone has changed.
Adam, you're just so down to earth. Love it! :)
Wow! This is a trip! I remember watching that build vid when it first came out.
I had just rewatched this ODB the other day. I didn't notice as many shop changes (mostly because I was watching the build, not the shop) but I did notice the table surfaces and your table saw. Thanks for this commentary, Adam. This was really, really fun. My only wish would've been a current reveal of the box to show how it has weathered.
I would love to see more of these.
Truly a blast from the past!
That was Great ... Thanks Adam
I really loved that build (I like both bladerunner, boxes, and prop guns).
I remember watching that convex mirror get broken and i use that as a reference of what time period these videos take place in!!
I had forgotten the 'pop rivet into plywood' attachment trick... Fun to watch (again!)
Very cool video Adam!!! I had never seen this video and watching it with your commentary was awesome!!! Loved hearing you talk about the changes, the updates, what still works, etc... Thank you!!! Now I shall go and watch it as aired. Greg
i remember watching this. gosh 7 years ago. Ive made a few boxes myself since.
I was turned onto TESTED about a year or two after the original posting of the BLASTER case One Day Build so I went back to watch it and haven't looked back since.
I loved that first ODB, it is a big part I started following tested.
Adam, I am a long-time viewer and builder of many precision building projects. You mentioned that it always longer to complete projects or it will go the other way where you will think a projects will take hours where the project will be complete in minutes. I am always looking for new videos and I find using your methods to complete projects, keep up the good work.
Thanks, Adam for you cool videos and thanks to the team over the years of great content.
Enjoyed the ODB birthing docu-commentary. Thank you Tested team for making my COVID-19 convalescence a little more pleasant. Didn’t have the energy to work on any of my projects. Yours was a very satisfying substitute.
Very cool to look back at this. I'm planning a box/case build myself, to hold the next iteration of my modular synthesizer; your comments on the hardware (especially the corners and butterfly closures), and particularly on how the needs of the thing contained and the human dimensions act as constraints on the design of such a case, are really helpful. (I built my current Eurorack synth into a secondhand Nikon telephoto lens case, which dictated a lot of the design backwards, but even the odd incidental details ended up working out; for example, the lid won't come off and stops opening at about a 90° angle to the body. The lid is too heavy, when open, to have the case rest flat on a desk and have the lid hang off the edge. But it turns out that if you just rest both parts on their hinge-adjacent edges, the open lid is a good tray for patch cables and accessories, and in the body, the working surface with the jacks and knobs ends up at a really nice angle to play with. I'm starting to think that that case is about at the limits of portability - it has suitcase handles on two sides and accompanying shoulder strap rings - so I'm debating whether the new case needs that kind of hardware, or a lid at all, though I suppose even a stationary synth could benefit from a dust cover. Ah, design decisions.)
I remember when this video came out. I was in my first apartment. jeez you make me feel old.
wow, 7 years... hard to believe i've been watchin (at least) this long... keep it going!
Love this extra insight into the early days! Please show the box now after all those years!
A tip from a newbie... When I use 1/4" rivets, I will use a #4 flat washer on the inside where the attachment media is very thin and would eventually pull out.
Scary how time flies. I remember when I was a young buck years would matter so much now seven years ago doesn't seem long at all.
i never in a thousand years would have thought to start with a full box and cut out the geometries from that. i love it.
Thank you for sharing your love. I love watching anything you post but anything blade runner just captures my attention now. I had never seen the movie but I've been so fascinated by your work I just had to watch the movie. Ive been missing out on such a good movie untill now lol. Thank you 🥰
Your way to come up with a story behind every part of an object helps me design stuff now. Thanks for that idea.
I remember the day I watched this ODB way back and I cannot believe how quick the time has gone. Feels like it was last week🙈
love the measuring tactics
Realizing i used the same measuring technique for my standing desk. Measuring things around how you intend to use them just makes sense to me.
Institutionally, one day builds remind me of the early space program. They had a thing to do and just did it. Looking back it’s hard to believe they managed it with what they had available.this was great to watch.
I actually remember that build. The channel has definitely come a long way. My ex boyfriend played guitar and had a cab (don't remember the brand) & an Engl head that looked like the paper he used on this build (though leather, not paper, of course). Time definitely goes too fast.
Very cool! I remember watching this!🙌👍 Right On!
I can not beleve i´ts been 7 years already since i first watched your first one day build. and these many since then. I try to remember what it was before odb on tested.....
I remember that build! What a great look back. And now that I see it again you know I'm wishing it had just a hint of amber lighting hitting/accenting that pistol in it's cradle.
This was the video that got me in to Tested!
The lost sander is a prime example of why I rarely lend tools. When I do I always write down who they are, what they have & the date it was borrowed.
One of my favorite builds. So many ideas for remaking the gun case form Leon.
Finally some information about the mirror! THX :D
This is one of those videos that I always think of when I'm building a case or a box for anything. (Actually I had it going on when I built my first case.) 🙂
Whenever me and my father were using tools of any kind as I was growing up his mantra was always, "DON'T FORCE IT." So I learned that early and often. 😁
I think your blade runner blaster might be my favorite prop you have made. Have loved every video you have done with it.
Very cathartic process to will the boxes into existence like molding clay
Dad said the best trick for box making. He learned from a master carpenter in the navy. Was to build a cube then cut the "top" off. Other wise you will be forever trying to make the two pieces match.
This commentary was great! A lot of interesting insight, looking forward to the next one!

Lord this takes me back. Has it really been 7 years. And I'm near positive I had those same shorts lol 4:37 Thinking about all the tested videos I've watched and your retrospective commentary, it dawns on me that I've taken a lot more lessons than I realized. Vertical space is a big one. My last roommates hated it lol
About those voids in the house. My dad (rest is peace) when our house was in the framing stage he snuck into the house in middle of the night and cut out and changed the framing of the kitchen pantry before the drywallers came through, drywallers came through and no one asked questions afterwards. It gave us an enormous walk in storage for food.
I do that, @8:15, when I'm designing an insert & a box to hold the items. Also if it's something that's going on a display or POP that's an odd shape, you have to draw the shape and figure out the folds or any other way to hold the item.
When you’re talking about your design process I thought that I was weird because that is how I am ... glad to know I’m not alone
I remember watching this oh so many years ago. That Bladerunner gun is one of the coolest guns in SciFi, IMHO! I would have liked to see the case at the end of the video, to see how it looks now, I was surprised you did not show it.
That was fun!
That Blade Runner blaster case video is how I discovered this channel :)
I’d love to see a new full shop tour, it’d be so interesting to compare to the old tour.
More! More!
I'd love to see this style of video for other ODBs! Especially Totoro!
For archival tips you could check out Baumgartner’s Restorations here on YT! The very nature of his work means that every process and tool he has is for the intent of preserving and archiving! (Not to mention his videos are all wonderful to watch!)
Great Video. Neat looking back at your shop. I think it's the most I have ever seen you sit still in a video lol. You can tell your enjoying the moment.. Stay Safe Ya All.
I would love to see a video of Adam reacting to his Live build of the Stranbeest
This was so fun
Very cool! Would also like to see a tour and comparision when you hit the 10 year mark
This is a fun video. Thank you for sharing.
I really enjoyed watching this commentary. Always a bit nostalgic going back to the older ODBs. I look forward to hopefully seeing more of them. One request though; at the end of these, please can you show off the object itself (if possible) in it's present form?

It's a really great suggestion. Yes.
I'm glad I'm not the only one to lend tools to friends, forget who I lent them to and then go buy another one. I seriously need a tool inventory checkout sheet to keep it straight.
That Craftsman tablesaw he was using in that ODB is the exact one I have in my shop. A good tool. : ) Looks like his had the exact same Biesemeyer fence I use as well!
For archival glues and tapes try a picture framing suppliers, they use them all the time for mounting, both semi and permanent.
Cool! I remember the first time I saw that. I got excited when I realized it was “that dude” from Mythbusters. 🤣

In the video, Adam keeps saying 7 years ago and in the same breath says this is from 2013. Was this reaction video filmed in 2020, or was the original video actually in 2015, OR is Adam confused about what year he’s living in?

I enjoy listening to these insights that maybe most people would not notice like differences in the shop or tools.
I had watched that video so many times! 😀
