Adam Savage Installs His New Lathe Chuck!
Ғылым және технология
Adam gets excited by the prospect and potential of a new lathe chuck he just received, using a collet system he's envied for years. It'll be more gentle on materials he's machining than the six jaw chuck he normally uses, but will require a bit of clean up and calibration. But its accuracy is what ends up surprising Adam as he spins it up for a test!

Also Collets are self centering. While 3 or 6 Jaw does get close when centering, the are not as precise as a Collet. 🙂 Like Adam pointed out you can center a 4 jaw very precisely, but you have to do it manually and its time consuming.

Dear Adam... When you were a starry-eyed young scene-painter and model maker with dreams of working in movies, did you ever imagine that one day there'd be a one-reeler film with the gripping title "Adam Savage Installs His New Lathe Chuck!" and tens of thousands of people would flock to see it on opening day?
Why does seeing Adam happy make me happy, anyways i love the vibe Adam
You can hear the joy and astonishment when Adam exclaims "Ho HOOO F*****". I love it when Adam is thrilled.
I love how Adam just HAD to make the chuck-key holder before he was done for the day!

He was giving it the stink eye when he began cleaning the chuck. We all knew it was going to happen.
Adam being able to just make a holder for his chuck key, without going to get materials or have a complicated design process, is true goals as a maker.

I truly understand the pure joy you felt at get that mounted with basically no runout on the first try. It’s a testament to the quality of the new equipment and justification of the purchase that it stayed true during shipment.
I love how I’ve never heard you say like and subscribe. It’s just about sharing your passion and kindness with people. I thank you for sharing your readily apparent joy of creation, making, working, and filming. Thanks for your great videos!
I think some of the runout you measured there was from the identifying etch on the endmill. The indicator was riding directly over it, which sort of suggests it's even more concentric than you thought!

I will never, ever get tired of these videos
The look on your face, Adam, was worth any price! Love your reaction, your enthusiasm, your Joie de Vivre. Thanks for sharing this.
Riiiight. So that box labelled "Mummy Book of the Dead" is just going to get unmentioned...? xD
"because I didn't think about it and I'm impatient" is a great summary of my life.
Why do I get so excited when he gets new tools and parts? OH! I KNOW WHY! CAUSE ADAM GETS EXCITED! I love having an engineering mind.
Adam's excitement at the accuracy of the new chuck is SO heart warming... Find the joy in the little things in life my friends, in this case the REALLY litl things. Lets all strive to be more like Adam.
One of my favorite things about the editing on this channel is when Adam walks off screen and there's a seamless cut to him walking back into frame a moment later even though logically much more time has to have passed in between.
I'm looking forward to seeing how you're going to store all of those collets!
I love these videos and thanks for making them ! Used to watch you with my papa growing up who sense passed
I really enjoy watching you do lathe work. I can never afford a wonderful machine like that so I live vicariously through you doing your thing. Keep making such assume work.
I always find it funny that when you get a reading better than expected, the first thing is to disbelieve it and check the indicator is actually contacting the piece.
I love how a box casually reads: "Mummy book of the dead" like its the most normal thing in the world haha
Adam, did you catch Inheritance Machining do a chuck adapter for his rotary table so he can move chucks from lathe to mill without removing the workpiece? Has the same cam lock system.
As impressive as the lathe chuck accuracy is, how about the tool you are using to measure it? The machining and work that must go into making a tool capable of measuring to that level is amazing!

Measuring tools are the holy artifacts of the machine shop. Both because they are treated with the reverence they deserve and because they're the only thing you can't reliably make yourself (at least the most precise ones you have). Without having high quality, well treated and certified measuring equipment you have no idea whether what you make is within tolerance or not.
The no background music is so damn satisfying
I find it fascinating, that the first lathe/milling machine, then made parts to make a more accurate machine, and on and on. It all started by hand manufacture!
I've been on another This old Tony binge, i was expecting vacuum pop sounds when he plucked collets out and air ratchet sounds when he unscrewed the cam locks 🤣🤣
This is totally awesome
I believe this is a Pratt Burnerd Multisize Collet Chuck + Collet Set EC2-EC13. I had never seen it before.
Nice... Even better feeling is when you put indicator in chuck and measure this deviation along a 5 in long test bar in place for a carbide drill in all x, y, pitch and yaw.
In the end Adem justified his purchase with how accurate this chuck is! Haha
Wow! This brought back memories! I worked for about 40 years in a machine shop and sorry to say hated every minute.. lol. I worked on lathes, mainly this old belt driven ones.. I’m very familiar with the collets, indicators and such. Many a bruised knuckles hitting the spinning chuck. I used a brass bar to tap on pieces to bring them to specs. Even seeing you lay the cloth down for cleaning I did… I learned a lot from really talented workers..it was not my forte, but the benefits were good, I learned a trade and now I stock dairy overnights in a grocery store..to which I prefer…thanks for the memories
You know something is beyond amazing when the sudden realization leads to an unrestrained (censored) f-bomb.
Great chucks sir
2:30 that moment is so honest I’ve BEEN there
Machinist you admire, huh? I too admire This Old Tony!
Ha! I used to sing Chuck Keys in love too. Dad humour.😂
Nice Addition, dat is accurate!
Dude dead on!!!!
Nice! My 5C works great for me, but it does have the camlock system which i LOVE. Was lucky enough to get my South Bend Heavy 10 from NASA
I knew you must be in the tenths when you cursed then spun it around and around and around in disbelief. Awesome!

Adam, you made the cleaning of the Chuck, look like Childs play 😏 so sorry, i had to!
Mummy book of the dead!? I hope you’re replicating that awesome mechanism
Hi Tested!!! Adam talked in a video recently about other youtube machinists that he admires. I was curious if one of those is My Mechanics. If you haven't introduced yourself to his page yet, it is another level of artistry and mastery of a craft. If you haven't seen him yet I also apologize, because when I found him I spend the better part of 3 days watching his content because it is so amazing.
Protect this man at all costs.
Ayeee signing Wicked Game by Ursine Vulpine at 13:09. Great song... oh!
Part 2…though I worked a lot on lathes in my early years, I ended up sharpening circular knives on many sizes.. resulting in many cuts and stitches.
When Adem announces an upcoming one day build!!! 🤩🤩🤩
Chuck Collet is a great name for a machinist!
Aaand a "Book If The Dead" randomly laying around.... 🤣❤️
I recognized that collet system from This Old Tony!
"Chuck Keys in love." Well, there's my new ear worm. Thanks Adam.
*those are some very nice looking chucks...looking forward to seeing them in use on a yet to be filmed one day build or multi stage fabrication project of exceptional cleverness*
hey the bezel on that electronic dial can rotate so you can look at it right side up.
You have every tool in the world
"Put it into rotation." I get it.
It's too late for this year. But next Valentine's Day there should be Chuck Keys in Love hoodies in the Tested store. Inside a heart shape would be two crossed chuck keys. A perfect gift for a maker's SO!
Im surprised youre using a digital indicator. One if the big things with the analog dial indicators is being able to see the "sweep".

I was looking for a comment of this, I 100% take an analog indicator over a digital one any day of the week for that exact reason. Still, seeing Adam this happy about his new chuck makes me happy too.

OK, I can't be the only one that caught the Rickie Lee Jones reference at 18:44 ...
Ya my next will be a collet chuck
My hero growing up Science made fun Thx
I've never seen a thing like a parts washer before, so many questions.. I've got some googling to do.
adam is so happy, like loses all composure
do you think rust remover might work in the parts washer? no soak, just scrub? probably not.
I wonder when Adam is going to create a matching ball for the other end of the chuck key 😀😃😃
@16:54 Regarding a place for the chuck key. At my school (probably after some scary mishap) the teachers built a chuck key holder for each lathe that acted as a safety switch for the lathe. If the key wasn't in its holder the lathe wouldn't start. But then again we almost always used the three jaw chucks. Might be a bit of a different problem if you tend to switch. Impressive performance from the new chucks btw honestly gave me a bit of goosebumps.

I made that mistake just once...
@Kenionatus
Жыл бұрын
Was just thinking about that and was thinking back to the machines I used. The solution that the newer lathes I used went with is a cover over the chuck you have to lift in order to insert the key. It adds one more movement to the clamping/unclamping action, but it's independent of the chuck. The cover never got in the way because it was only over the chuck and partially transparent.
As a person who has no idea what is happening I say good job to you sir
i have the ER 40 collet & have 200 of a tenth verbal & can adjust with 3 grub screws to being it in to a zero, run out. Now that a collet siystom to have.
The PRatt Burnered KC15 is awesome. I love mine. I also have a ER40 set-tru chuck, you should check that out Adam :)
I have smaller lathe but really never use anything other than my er40 collets. 3 jaw it came with probably has been used twice in expansion mode only.
Is it bad whenever I'm not a machinist but I was still super satisfied by that accuracy.... LoL
15:08- When you correctly tighten the chuck a bit at a time you can get that good a result. Usually within eight microns. If you had clamped the mount tightly and then rotated to clamp down the rest of it would have been way off. That said, Dayum! The FIRST TIME?!?!?!
Keep chasing 0s 😃
I am 90% sure a similar collet was used in the newer Star Wars movies. The "death star" part and Rey's staff incorporated a collet just like this!
I am a machinist and love these videos.
As a none native english speaker that thought he knew english well, I understand NOTHING what he is talking about.... But seeing him happy with his new toy I can ALWAYS relate too 😁
Nice
At the end of the video you are advertising the temporary measuring tattoo. I went looking for that on the store recently, and again today, and I can't find it. I even went back to the video you did on that specifically and the link in the description there was broken. Are those discontinued, or is there a problem with the store?
anyone knows what kind of collet this is ? I've never seen one like that.
Having trouble finding the demerit badges for sale on the web store, it’s just apparel 😢
That should be a badge “accidentally right the first try”
I wonder could Darth Maul's lightsaber have been inspired by one of those collets....?
Didn't see that Gelbert reference coming.

I like for most of the machining projects Adam's known how far out his other chucks have been and just gone 'F*ck it, we'll do it live!' but this chuck is a different kettle of fish all together.
an here I thougt all collets are supposed to be that good. In my shop we have the schaublis system on a few lathes on there it is also possible to go quite a bit bigger with collets, using a few different adapters
Could you make the blades of chaos
Speaking of larger collets, your six jaw looks to have reversible jaws, and I'm guessing your three jaw as well. That means you can run soft jaws on them, which are effectively custom collets, easily adapted to any purpose and perfectly concentric if machined in situ. Generally, while delicacy can be a reason to use a collet, the main factors are better grip and repeatability. They can also be used with bar feeders to continuously feed stock without stopping the lathe. And good gosh: that 5C chuck is 6-7 thou out? You should be within a few tenths. Matt @ Precision Matthews had some really good pricing on a Bison version a few years ago. It was maybe 2 tenths out?
You say that your 5C collet chuck is out by how much?
I own a Milwaukee M18 3/8 drill... is that bigger?
Mummy: The Book of the Dead --> Can't wait for that video!
I spy with my little eye, a Mummy Book Of The Dead in the back there.
A digital indicator to check run-out? 🤯
Ooh, an extra eighth! In that case, totally justified 😂
The amount of teasing with that "Mummy book of the dead" box just casually sat there on the table saw. Seriously guys.
Does anyone know what Adam uses in his washer? I worked for a very small CNC company (6 machines, specialising in brass and stainless steel) for about 12 years, and we only ever had kerosene to clean things.
Every collet will be different as far as concentricity/run out goes. But a couple tenths is good. You’d be hard pressed to do better on any lathe with any chuck.
