    Just have to make a lot of adjustments for having to lead the target a/c with your sights.... but the software to do that is probably almost freeware these days.

    The first aerial engagements took place before even having mounted guns. Pilots went aloft with handguns and rifles and shot at each other with those.

    The thing is, a dedicated gunner in a WW1 plane, was not the best thing to go up against, at least in comparison to planes that come later circa WW2. While the two platforms are more or less as you describe, it is a different beast than say, a Ju 87 vs P-47.

    At the end of WWI it was just shy of 15 years since the Wright Brothers first flight. And one of the brothers didn't even live to see WWI. The other lived past the end of WWII.

    My grandfather was in exactly that place, gunner/observer in an RE 8!! I finally get a brief look at what it was like to do that! Thank you, Adam!

    Reminds me of the _MythBusters_ experiment with car hood mounted machineguns. Accurate aiming was hard enough in two (and a bit of the third pitching up and down) dimensions.

    Let"s not forget the SPAD 13 WW1 French fighter plane (powered by an Italian V8..!!!)..blue prints were sent to the USA and French pilots taught the first Americans future fighter pilots how to fly ..

    @@Victor-uj8kz The French/Spanish builder of the different SPAD planes (13/17/21) engines the HISPANO-SUIZA V8 created different engines and power with the same block ,later allies like the USA/ENGLAND and Italy got to build them too under licensing ,It made me think that somehow it also became an Italian V8...!!!

    I like the 1911 colt .45 made for pilots. Had an extended magazine and a cage for collecting the brass and not letting it fall back into the canvas.

    Tracers are your friend as gunner, just follow them in to your target. A WWII B17 gunner told me that.

    I just yesterday did a dogfight simulator machine where it throws you upside-down and side to side while you steer, it was very very fun!

    The Red Baron has assumed a hero status, however, from the people that were there, he was a viscous coward as he would only engage with inexperienced pilots.

    @@martinmckowen1588 Not true. First of all, there was no way to pick out the rookies, they had enough trouble separating friend from foe. Second, one of then Lt. von Richthofen's fairly early victims was Major Lanoe Hawker VC, the British equivalent of Oswald Boelcke.

    Even though it makes sense for those early years in plane development, I had no idea they were built of wood. Always assumed the envelopes were some light sheet metal. Even the propeller is wood.

    The RE8's pilot probably could have done more to even the odds. If you read accounts of some ww1 dogfights you'll see some observer planes "slipping" and "skidding" the plane from side to side to clear the tail for the gunner. Steep banks also pop up as a way to clear blindspots. If they were willing to be a bit daring the pilot could have done a lot more to give Adam a shot opportunity.

    The Fokker engine was wrong, they driven by rotary engines not radial ones. This is an important detail because the radial engine doesn't have the spinning effect on the plane that a rotary engine does leading to massive differences in maneuverability.
