A big statement. And not just a little "no no, war bad", they showed all the horror and trauma that comes from battle. I'm glad they did, not a lot of people remember just how bad war actually is. Hell, I don't even know myself. But it shouldn't take a war to remind me.

I feel like some of these 'personified horrors of war' are actually also based on people they knew (the 'Pain' boss very much feels like Johannes, especially when we see him during the outro section with the same disfigurement, plus the art and bird symbolism for both, whereas Despair could have been the Mother. Unsure which one may have been the 'Father' but it would make sense, that the horrors that manifest are inspired by those who were caught in the crossfire of the hells of war

Allegories of different kinds of fear. Fear of families torn apart. Fear of men and beast suffering. Fear of crippling wounds. Fear of sudden death from above. Only one I can't figure out is that metal king monster in the bunker. Fear of losing yourself? And that's just one way to read this game. I didn't expect much from it to be honest, but this is a game you can read in different ways. Which is great! I can't say the same for most other games.

World War one was an awful conflict. My Great grandfather actually fought as an American Doughboy in World War one, and my grandfather told me he never spoke about it.
