Acute Gastritis (Stomach Inflammation) | Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Acute Gastritis (Stomach Inflammation) | Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
Acute gastritis is a condition involving inflammation of the gastric (stomach) mucosa. A wide variety of factors can cause acute gastritis including some bacterial infections, consumption of certain beverages and some medications. This inflammation of the stomach lining leads to a variety of symptoms. In this lesson, we discuss a large list of causes of acute gastritis, including all of the signs and symptoms, complications of acute gastritis, and how clinicians diagnose and treat acute gastritis.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I forgot to mention that in the case of B12 deficiency caused by gastritis (which can be from atrophic gastritis or autoimmune gastritis), B12 INJECTIONS are required as oral supplements will not be absorbed efficiently!

here we go again with my gastritis attack together with anxiety attack. deadly combo ever. makes me want to give up everything. i cannot breathe properly because of the uncomfortable feeling of fullness in my stomach, trapped gas, uncontrollable anxiety, and my freaking cold which makes me even more anxious whether i have covid or not. It gets worse right after i eat my meal. i have been experiencing acid reflux and heartburn ever since the pandemic started i remember being so terrified back then when i was so clueless. and i am still now tbh.. thank you for your helpful information and thank you to all these people that shared their experiences, you've no idea how much it makes me feel a lot better knowing that i'am not alone in this. whoever you are reading this, I know what you're feeling and I want you to know that YOU are not alone in this. Dang I’m going through some mysterious vomiting cycle right now, not as bad as 7 days straight but it still takes a toll on me because it’s like at least once every week. I’ve had an episode though where I just couldn’t stop puking until all of the contents of my stomach were empty, you’re right I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Did you ever get like a weird, dry cough before vomiting? Maybe a certain throat trigger that taps you and tells you to clear your throat only to puke? Curious, I’m on my journey to find out what I have but will plan to see a gastroenterologist. Hope you are much better now

I think I've only had one, upper abdominal-related pain but it lasted minutes. I guess I do also experience chronic shortness of breath. One time I had moderate to severe chest pain, lasted maybe 10-15 minutes while I was out walking. I've had migraines here and there but nothing that occurs every day same with some occasional heartburn. It seems my issue stems from somewhere in the throat because that what triggers it. Figured since I finally healed my erosive gastritis after 3 years of hell, I'll post a comment for any future lurkers looking for answers and tips. First, I took 40 mg PPI once in the morning, 30 minutes before breakfast. 20 mg Pepcid in the evening and then another one before bed. Reduce to one Pepcid after a month. 1000 mg Tums when needed. If I felt any discomfort, I took tums. What finally did it for me was removing fiber from my diet. That was the last culprit. Then I only ate 4 things until I was healed. Plain toast (white bread), rice cakes lightly salted and watery white rice with 2 salmon fillets. That's it. I usually cook about two cups of rice, put it in a plastic container, add the salmon and mix it all up. Baked, no seasoning. The key was easy to digest foods and small, frequent meals. Your digestive system needs a rest, but you have to eat. Your body needs amino acids aka protein to repair the damaged tissue, hence the salmon. Eating this in the evening is best because our bodies can't store amino acids, supposedly. So I ate my protein late so by the time I went to bed, the amino acids were now in my blood ready to be used to heal the damage and our bodies do all its healing while we sleep. Drink plenty of natural spring water in between meals, not with your meals. Sleep elevated, get good quality sleep, improve your posture which will aid in the digestion process along with walking after eating. Anything to make digestion easier on your body. Reduce stress, get some sun for vitamin D. What I found to be the best thing to do for pain, place a cold bottle of water on your stomach, takes away the pain almost immediately. I would also wear a heating pad while I slept. I called it heat therapy. The idea was that heat improves blood circulation and promotes blood flow to the area the heat is applied to. So by placing the heating pad on my stomach, the heat would increase blood flow to my stomach along with the recently added amino acids, thus allowing the body to do a better job at healing the damage to the lining. Another thing, if you have pain while out of the house like at school or work, go buy one of those heat pads used for back pain but place it on your stomach. Works very well and can help get you through the day. But that's about it. The diet is rough, and you will feel miserable at the beginning, hungry a lot. Don't cave into the cravings, STICK to the diet, it's the only way. Over the next couple of weeks, you'll start to notice the pain get better and better, and before you know it, you'll be close to being symptom free, but don't think you're healed just yet. You're getting there, but give it more time, you need to fully heal and then give time for your lining to go back to full strength if you want to go back to the good foods. This is what I did, and it took a few months, but it was worth it. My horrible gastritis finally healed (confirmed via endoscopy) and it was bad. The doctor said it was the worse he's ever seen, like someone who abused alcohol their whole life. Now, I can eat anything, chocolate, fried foods, pizza, soda and even a small amount of spicy foods, but I don't do that very often. Good luck.

@@arkiteck1273 I've been on my PPI (Protonix) for years. It worked fairly quickly, like within a day for my acid reflux and stomach pain. Still on it now, but plan to wean off sometime next year. I tried other medications like Dexilant, Nexium and Prevacid, but none of them worked. Only Protonix and Prilosec. That's the one negative with gastritis and the healing process, finding the medication that works. If you're on a PPI and a diet similar to what I recommended, and you're still feeling pain, then the med may not be working, and might need to switch. A PH-level test of the stomach during an EGD can determine this.

@@BellaNoir3 so mainly, I have constipation issues when I thought it wasn’t that. I started drinking prune juice and it has helped me dramatically. My guess is you start that as soon as possible to get your bowels moving. Try 8 ounces every time you awake up if not 16. That’s what I do. As to the heart rate increase, they told me it could be because I was dehydrated when I thought I wasn’t so it puts more strain on your heart. And finally I have acid reflux which can cause gas / burps to be stuck in your esophagus that can increase heart rate or cause heart palpations (heart beating irregular). So I also suggest to start drinking pure celery juice to help with your esophagus heal from the stomach acid. And lastly, I cut down my food portions. I thought I wasn’t eating a lot of food until I cut down my portions and now I don’t feel the increased heart rate when I eat or after I eat. Also for gas issues, try drinking anise star herb tea or green tea, it helps you pass gas. If you have any other questions let me know, I’ll tell you what helped me get through this.

Then, get a BAR of soap and while laying down, rub your belly gently. After, get a planket and lay down for a couple minutes. You can ethier lay down for about 10, 30, 20 minutes. So Sunday July 3… I brought some probiotics.. took some… still in pain. later that evening, after researching. I started the antibiotics and Omeprazole treatment. July 4… I start the Brat diet ( Banana, plain rice, applesauce and wheat toast.. with a glass of rice milk only) I stayed on the antibiotics for the full 7 days. Today July 9 my last day with the brat diet and antibiotics and Omeprazole combination. So far so good. I started to sleep better after the 3rd day… and today I notice a spike in my energy. I went completely plant based on July 8. Life changer. No more pain in upper belly.. no more nausea feeling after I eat or drink…. No more fullness… no more heating pad. And bloating went down and I lost a few pounds this week. The only thing I need to do is get back into working out. But yes… I will be careful and watch for triggers. But overall. I’m a happy camper. Had symptoms for a week already and still have the problem, upper stomach hurts after eating ANYTHING and the pain can last for hours with the urge of heavy feeling and vomiting acid and mucus. Only medicine that's really helped was the packets of Gastricell which still gave me bloating but eliminated the aching pain.

@@Jazzaftv I recovered within 2-2.5 weeks. Mine was mostly caused by incorrect and unneeded use of too much Digestive Enzymes, doctor incorrectly prescribed them to me, my problem was that I had acid reflux and digestive enzymes made it worse so the acid inflamed my stomach lining and caused gastritis. Usually gastritis is caused my the Pylori bacteria but in my case it wasn't. Get checked for Pylori, if you don't have it then have your doctor prescribe PPI medication and you must follow those directions very clearly for the medication. Taking those medications for that specific time before a meal will work.

From someone who has cured gastritis ( caused by taking too much Ibruprofen) - change your diet! I took Omeprazole for months and months and it was only when I decided enough was enough and removed all acidic things from my diet that I was almost instantly cured. You need to give your stomach time to heal without irritating it again and again. I now only drink water and tea, no juices, no lemons, no oranges, no spicy foods, no coffee etc. My diet is fairly plain but not too plain as I have figured out what my stomach can cope with.

Even plain rice irritated my stomach to the point of being bent over in pain. I know I need to soldier on with the bread. I was going to try eating a plain potato, but I know its probably too soon. Your comment encouraged me to take things so and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks 👍

So I've been struggling with horrible gastric symptoms since 2019 that heavily impact my ability to sleep. Laying down, even elevated, can sometimes create the most horrific chest pains imaginable leaving me unable to sleep for the whole night. I recently went to a gastroenterologist and got an endoscopy that revealed I had a small hiatal hernia along with gastritis. I typically don't feel any pain throughout the day, only sleep debilitating cramps/chest pains while trying to sleep at night. Has anyone else with confirmed gastritis experienced these symptoms??

  • @morgankasabri4151

Yes yes yes. I have been experiencing those EXACT symptoms for a few weeks. Since I complained of chest pain, the doctor prescribed me steroids, which made it worse. Yesterday, I got my gastritis diagnosis and feel a small bit better, but I am still having pain. I literally did not sleep for entire nights because chest pain was so bad, and my breathing was affected too. It was almost like I could not take a deep breath. You are not alone, and I think with correct diet and medication, we will heal our guts.

The only relief comes from lying in the fetal position, knees to my chest. I think I will try the fodmap diet for a few weeks to see if that helps. I was okay for a few months, but have recently started having my “episodes” again. Also, something I noticed is that I’ll have an episode if I wear skinny jeans! Bodies are so freaking weird. I was recently in the emergency room. I was throwing up, had diarrhea, headache, and upper stomach pain. Emergency room doctors took xrays and diagnosed me with gastric wall thickness. And inflammation of the stomach. I was hospitalized for 3 days, no food, straight IV taking cipro antibiotics. They told me I could land right back in the E.R and told me not to eat acidic foods. They recommended I stay away from vegetables, especially uncooked, because that was my last meal, a salad the night before. So it’s possible I also had some sort of stomach bug. But a stomach bug wasn’t my diagnosis they didn’t find that in my blood test. They found inflammation in my blood test. The xrays showed I had intestinal blockage. They asked me several times if I had stomach surgery in the past which I answered NO. They were considering surgery. Here is the thing.. my situation is a little different. About 12 years ago I started talking griseofulvin for a really bad case of athletes foot. I would take it like every 2-3 yrs. 5 years ago I actually took the stronger pills, Terbinafine or Lamisil, which I REGRET till this day. Do the math it started when I was 14 and now I’m 30. My stomach has never been the same. I believe my stomach problem is drug induced. Because of those pills. The Emergency room team recommended I follow up with an endoscopy. Any body has a similar situation? Any doctor advice? Im worried. What natural remedies can I take to undo some of the damage?

I was a vegetarian for 13 years and the last 4 months my depression got really bad and it made me eat almost anything even meat again and I ended up with gastritis (what the er said) and Gained 23 pounds the heaviest I’ve been. I never had gi problems. I’ve switched back to a plant based bland diet. I do suffer from migraines and will take a pain pill because it’ll be to much to handle even though I don’t like taking them but going to the chiropractor seems to help a lot with my migraines. I think these are the reasons I’ve gotten gastritis. It be so bad it gives me anxiety and messes with my breathing and almost hard to do a swolling motion. Pepcid has helped. I really am experimenting what foods don’t trigger acid reflux and heart burn. Will see a gp doctor soon.

Take homeopathic acidil. I won't take over the counter drugs or even prescription drugs for gastritis and all the other pains and burning that comes from inflammation. Acidil is homeopathic and doesn't reduce your acids in your stomach. You need these acids for digestion.

Hi can someone help me? I went to the doctors and said I have gastritis however the only symptoms I have is bloating. I don’t experience heart burn, nothing. I also don’t drink so am not to sure what caused it. I have a theory it was the prework out I was consuming. Does the bloating mean I have acute gastritis? If so what do you recommend for me.

DR.... I have a question concerning Gastritis. I have been suffering with IBS form many years. I'm 69 yo, and suffer from many spinal issues including Dextroscoliosis as a result of Leg Length Discrepancy since 1966 at age 15. From a fractured right femur (HS football), the right leg is 1 " short and nothing was prescribed at that time by the Ortho doctor. That Trauma which was left untreated or examined until 12 years ago, has Wreaked Havoc with my spine and thus my entire well being. One Spinal Surgeon (Mt. Sinai in NY), who I consulted with for possible surgery, told me that the Dextroscoliosis of 25 degrees should not be taken too lightly. It can affect the nerves which travel to the various organs (Stomach, Lungs, Heart, etc.). He is RIGHT. Moreover, a "old" Neurologist (53 years in practice), reviewed Lumbar and Cervical MRIs in 2018. He depicted bulging and/or herniations at L2 and L3 ( and L5- S1), are protruding into the spinal canal and cord AND into the front. He said that "could" affect your Stomach.... I think he is RIGHT. Although, I can't get GI doc or my PCP to agree with that assessment, after all of my digging into the spinal issues, and the Vast affects on the Central Nervous System (I have peripheral nerve damage from all the stenosis), it seems to Common Sense. I go through bouts of Gastritis (confirmed in the last colonoscopy in 2019), and am right now. Unfortunately, due to the Cervical spine issues and the Facet Joint arthritis , I suffer with lots of chronic "itises" : Gastritis, sinusitis, arthritis (in lots of my joints and spine), IBS, GERD, ..... To my recollection, it all started to culminate in 1982. I felt heart palpitations, upset stomach / Bloating / Pressure and went to my PCP at that time. The GI series and EKG were fine. My wife was pregnant atb the time, and the doctor "blamed" the conditions on that ....nerves. After what I have recently learned in my research, yes, Nerves have been affected. Particularly the Vagus Nerve from Cervical Instabilities.

Hi brother, I will be so happy if you reply to this it's going to help a lot. I treated my h pylori for two month but I still can't eat some foods. Do you think there is hope for some gastritis to go away after healing? Or is it something we have to deal with it forever?

  • @TheDeeba2

    @TheDeeba2

    2 жыл бұрын

You won’t have to deal with it forever. Now that the h pylori is completely gone (I assume), you need to heal your gut. Consume more greens, fish and lentils and stay away from takeout/spicy/oily food, sugary foods and dairy for a few weeks until symptoms improve. Take a dairy free probiotic (this should be taken along with antibiotics). Try replacing bread with sourdough and cow milk with oat/soy/almond milk. Get a stomach acid test, if your stomach acid is low (which h pylori usually causes), you’ll need to increase it by consuming apple cider vinegar. Also, take natural things that’ll heal your gut/esophagus- Manuka honey, liquorice root or slippery elm supplements. zinc-l-carnosine supplements help with gut lining as well. Hope this helps. These greatly reduced my symptoms. Just make sure you’re not allergic to anything on this list.

Thank you for the excellent educational video. I just got diagnosed with gastritis and a hiatal hernia. Is there any connection between the 2. I already had surgery for an umbilical hernia a few years ago and really would prefer not to have surgery on this hiatal hernia. So, I was just wondering if there was a connection between gastritis and that hernia and if treating the gastritis could help me to avoid surgery. Oddly, I never really had any symptoms of gastritis except for a really bloated stomach. The doctors found it and the hernia when they performed a routine endoscopy to see if my gluten free diet was healing my celiac disease damage to my intestines. Thank You.

I’m feeling better than I was a week ago but obviously still nowhere near 100%. Do I HAVE to take the PPI to heal this? Or will stopping the ibuprofen and cutting out food irritants be enough for it to heal?

  • @Natzoboss

See what works best for your body, but personally doubling my omeprazole (which I've noticed no side effects from) is what does the most work for radically shortening the length and severity of my episodes/flare-ups. My doctors had me go to 40mg morning and night once an attack begins and when I do, it wraps up within a few days now instead of weeks without it. When not in an episode, 20 mg morning and night has really helped keep it away for months at a time. (Can't speak for sucralfate, no experience with it.) All I'm saying is, I'm not a doctor but your doctor is, and it won't hurt in the long run to try and see if it helps you. I wish you luck figuring everything out!
