Project TL Drops Weight for Track Performance
By Brian Gillespie and Aaron Gaghagen
You thought we forgot about Project TL. Well, we didn't. Viewer voting pushed other project cars ahead in the process, but we are focusing on the TL now. The approach for this project remains the same. We are treating the TL like a giant Civic. We are going to do everything we would do to a Civic track car that gets driven on the street during the week.

Hey Brian, you’re about to get schooled, with the rear end not kicking out problem you got the easy way out of putting slimmer tiers back there but what you should do is have softer front end, am gonna explain, this is only for testing, so you want to disconnect both sway bars, raise the suspension up to not rub, without changing preload, soften the suspension to max, and what you trying to achieve is good amount of bodyroll, if the coilovers too stiff for that you might wanna consult tein on softer front springs, so when you achieve good amount of bodyroll what you wanna do is slam the rear sway bar back in at hardest setting, tighten the rear coilovers without touching the front suspension at all and don’t put back the front sway bar don’t do anything in the front, then test if that took out the bodyroll, so what we are doing here is the car want to roll from the front but the back is not allowing that which also means you having more weight temporarily on the back while cornering which would allow it to kick out, the back might not be able to hold that load and you would see in testing the front end rolling while cornering, not as much as the first test, but if it still does it you might wanna look into adjustable rear sway bar links which would allow you to tighten it more, but if that still isn’t enough you might wanna look into adjustable front sway bar links and run a front sway bar but soften it up with that, next is fine tuning, which means you don’t wanna have the tightest rear end and the softest front end, so you might wanna play around with the setup a bit to balance things out, even if fine tuning requires racing suspension setup expert, I think it’s worth it, you would probably be able to achieve good adjustment on your own tho. And for the guys in the comments, don’t do this on a street car it can be dangerous when done wrong and it’s not the most daily drivable.
Try tightening the APP sensor in the engine bay to help with the throttle response. Over time the cable gets sloppy or the sensor might be going out. I had the same issue on my 07 TL and it was night and day.

An idea next time when dealing with the holes on a door that are angled outward.....run a bolt from the back, put a socket on it with washers and a nut, and hammer or bend the angle out of it, use touch up paint, then use spacers behind your card with weatherstripping for stability and a clean look.
I have a 2008 TL base. I daily it, but I’m tempted to start in this direction. It is amazing as it is, you have provided directions to move forward. Thank You. So far, Cold Air, Ktuner with adjusted Vtech, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and EBC yellow stuff with rotors. I get blinkers every ride.

hey Brian, just a few things about the 3rd gen TL all base model 3.2 V6 TL's from 04-08 made 258hp at the crank, the 270hp was before the mandated SAE correction around 2005-2006 stock 5AT TL's with the J32 make typically around 210-215whp stock 6SPD TL's with the J32 make typically around 230-235whp

@isaiahphoto8944 theres a ton of stock dyno graphs on acurazine showing an average of 230-235whp.. j32's have never been known to be underrated from factory so it unlikely they make 250 wheel when all 3rd gen J32's make 258 at the crank... 6spd drivetrain loss is around 15% and 5AT is around 18-20%

Any footage on the seat swap? Would love to see it
Very interesting video. I’ve owned a DCT ilx and have been planning on tracking in soon, though it’s completely stock. the rear loves to drift when I need it to and the 1/8 number was actually better than the ones listed. You might enjoy picking one up in the near future, I think they can be a track killer. Planning on going for a stiffer rear shocks and maybe a slightly meatier tire in the front. Can’t wait to see how the TL progresses!

Do a 4th gen manual track build. I had twins and progress rear sway bar and indy firehawk tires, and i was really impressed with the road manners
What about the sunroof? It's like 200 pounds and up high. See now you're interupting the front/rear weight balance. The weight is only removed from the rear of the car. IF this is entirely for drag racing then cool. The heavy V6 front end cars need the counterweight to reduce the understeer/torque steer in corners. Take the battery out from under the hood and put it in the trunk... it's not really lightness that makes a car fast on a track. It's where the weight is positioned. Ideally right on top of the wheels. Tthe GTR proves that fact, good luck keeping up with a 4000+ pound R35 on a track even with a 600HP 2000 lb civic
@mayk3lll

Big roll bar in the rear will help with understeer, lsd will help with torque steer
@pepperfish_
7 ай бұрын
@@mayk3lll A regular LSD does not improve cornering it links the wheels together making it more difficult to turn bruh. Torque vectoring electric LSDs are expensive and difficult to set up. IF you are talking about a standard helical or clutch then the front tire wear will increase exponentially. You will end up trying different width/traction index tires ending up in the same spot you began, perhaps with a staggered setup. THere is no replacement for 50/50 weight balance.
@VTECAcademy
7 ай бұрын
We're not done yet. And the 600hp Integra from BYP lapped Sydney Motorsports Park quicker than 2 different GT-Rs from a higher class. Weight makes a difference on breaking, turning and acceleration. As does weight balance. A lighter rear end will help us to get the car to rotate with some liftoff oversteer.
@pepperfish_
7 ай бұрын
@@VTECAcademyFaster at corner entry and exit but slower mid corner. it's the lack of traction up front and rebound in the rear I'm afraid of. With that little weight in the rear it will be a handful good luck. In my opinion weight distribution is the final stage when tuning the chassis. Less weight also means less traction. Obviously the braking and acceleration will improve. But I'm doubtful about stability. I did alignment on modified cars and rally cars for 10 years and they always came back to me every time they took it all apart and reassembled to make it go straight no matter what road surface you're on.
@mayk3lll
7 ай бұрын
@yizzer2 who said anything about cornering. I said torque steer, Look up the definition. And yes a lsd will most definitely help with torque steer and since you bring up cornering, it will most definitely help with cornering. Also a 50/50 weight distribution is NOT ideal.
How about just buying a civic??
@NonbinaryBrother
7 ай бұрын
Depending on the years you’re comparing the TL might be a better option. It comes with a j series and the only civics that come with power similar to that tend to be more expensive. The TL might be heavier stock but you can remedy that. Maybe I’m wrong but I can understand choosing one of these over a civic.
@modehfy1352

I actually always questioned why people just don't use these or TSX as civics since the engine and transmission is usually taken out of them. With that being said, they do swaps so why not do it for the content and testing lol
