ACURA / HONDA rod bearing recall. STOP SALE!

This 2018 ACURA MDX with 51k miles experienced a rotating assembly failure by way of a damaged rod journal from a spun rod bearing. An audible knocking noise can be heard at idle, on acceleration, and when dry revving the engine. In this video, I remove the powertrain from the chassis, tear it down completely, and perform a short block replacement.
It seems that this is becoming more common, as I have replaced more of these short blocks than I can count. I told myself that I would make a video on the next one I do, and so here it is.
This is not intended to be an instructional video, and a labor operation of this magnitude should only be performed by a qualified and Certified Automotive Service Technician; however, I encourage anyone watching this video to take whatever information you can from it while also enjoying watching the process of dismantling an engine and putting it back together.
A study for percentage rate of failure on these J35 engines has been performed by scientists over the course of 365 days. Their data and metrics has been posted at the end of the video.
Shout out to all my fellow Technicians in the field hustling and getting their hands dirty. 🔧

    Thanks for this video. Bearing just gave out on my '18 TLX. I've had it towed to 2 different dealers and both have acted like the failure was next to impossible based on the low mileage and service history. I almost feel relieved to see that it is happening to other J35's as well. 🍻

    The vehicle was new to me. Service history showed the vehicle had the oil changed at recommended intervals by the dealer. You'll notice that most people like to blame this issue with these engines on oil change history, brand of filter, etc. It is a manufacturing/design defect.

    Yeah I totally agree. It's a manufacturing defect. Bearing went out on my 16 tlx v6 @80k miles. Installed a new engine, bearing went out after 20k miles.

    I wonder how this problem developed. These J35's are all build by robots. So, did someone get into the program for the robot that machines the rod bearings and change the program to a different specification? thus the problem. How would a robot do something wrong if it only knows one way to do its job?

    How do you feel about the new engine in the 2023 Pilots? Replacing the Vtec. Your opinion do you think besides emissions they are shooting for will it be a reliable engine?

  • @NSXavier997

    @NSXavier997

    Жыл бұрын

    Only time will tell how robust the new engine is but, overall, Honda has had some history developing some really reliable power plants. The VTC on both intake and exhaust cams should help in terms of performance and fuel efficiency, but also adds more moving parts with potential of failure down the line. The Honda V6 is a tried a tested unit, which they improve on from generation to generation. It’s too early to say how reliable it will be, but I’d put my money on Honda in terms of reliability over any other Manufacturer.

    @@TracyWatson-r8i This is an old video that I put out before HONDA came out with the recall. You probably had an inspection and repair procedure A done your TLX. That’s basically tear down of the connecting rods, inspection of the rod bearings and replacement of the bearings themselves.

    Yes, this was filmed before Honda came out with a proper Recall. We were replacing short blocks on all cars that came in with locked up engines up until that point. I can't comment on how long this took me. I'll just say that the labor time this pays under warranty is robbery by the Manufacturer and once again, the Technicians get the short end of the stick.

  • @NSXavier997

    @NSXavier997

    4 ай бұрын

    Haven't been proven yet but my theory is that upon assembly, incorrect tolerances on the crank main and / or rod journals to their respective bearings has caused either bearing(s) to spin. I actually have one in my bay right now with a broken connecting rod. I took the crank pulley bolt off previously while it was still in the car. I use a special socket and a Milwaukee cordless impact to take them off no problem.

    What caused the failure?

  • @NSXavier997

    @NSXavier997

    Yet to be determined or proven but my theory is that the rod bearing to rod journal clearances are too tight or were incorrect on engine assembly. This caused premature wear on the rod bearing and ultimately resulted in damage of the crankshaft rod journal. Honda has yet to release a formal cause of this failure that we are beginning to see on all vehicles equipped with the DFI 3.5L V6.
