ACURA / HONDA J37 PISTONS AND RINGS REPAIR FOR OIL CONSUMPTION

This video outlines the tear down and installation of new pistons and rings on a second gen .2 MDX. This is a common repair that is needed to be done to correct excessive oil consumption. Vehicles affected are ALL HONDA and ACURA vehicles equipped with J37 engines. Oil control rings become seized with carbon, thus allowing for oil to blow by them and the compression rings into the combustion chamber and ultimately burned. #ACURA #HONDA #VTEC #JDM

    I dealt with Acura for over a year. Finally the oil consumption notice came out so I took it in. They did the oil consumption test which meant driving it for 1000 miles and measuring consumption. I saw them over fill my reservoir by over a quart. I simply thought they had measured how much they put in, then they woyld drain it and measure how much came out after I drove the Thousand Miles. When they went to the dipstick I told them no way. I had already done three tests myself and knew that it consumed well over a quart and a half every Thousand Miles which is insane. They told me that I was wrong. I quickly changed their tune when I told them I had documented it on KZread. To make a long story short, after explaining to the service manager that I'm a very good backyard mechanic and not an idiot, he agreed to oversee the consumption test himself with my assistance. After the test, he agreed to do the work. I have heard many people have been turned down which is almost criminal since they sent out a service recommendation, although they did not call it a recall. Definitely a design flaw by Acura.

    Everyone, I have a 2013 Acura TL SHAWD, I finally started feeling the experience of the oil consumption issue at around 115k miles, heavily burning oil all the sudden, 1 quart every 1000 miles approx. the correct fix to this is to add oil or change oil and add oil until oil level is normal. Take it out on the freeway and do about 5-6 hard pulls from 30mph to 100mph, so hitting 7k rpm a few times each run, and there we go, it’s fixed. Running engine hard to high rpm breaks away, cleans, and vibrates away the carbon build up in the rings. Haven’t had oil consumption since. And now that I know, I do this about once a month to keep the clean cycle and never have the issue again. All the 3.7 j series vtec engines have this issue. So MDX, TL, Rl, just do this maintenance Vtec clean run and you’ll be glad I found the answer for y’all. I’m serious too, no trolling, try it and see if it fixes your issue. And if it fixed your issue, I wouldn’t mind a donation for saving you $4000.

    Hi there. Awesome video. This is the exact work that I will need to have done on my MDX. I have a 2010 Acura MDX with just over 200.000 thousand klms on it here in Montreal Canada. There was no past problems with this SUV at all. Always had oil changes done on time and or before due cycle to boot. Just so happens that 2 days ago (Jan. 4 2021). My engine light came on and I had a rough engine going on. I kinda knew that now I was running on like 5 pistons. I brought it to an Acura Plus dealership and had them check it out. Because of this damage due to a defect that I am no longer covered for and knowing that I won't be able to get a fair trade in for this SUV, I invested the 700$ for them to start to take the engine apart to find out the problem. What they found was a loss of compression due to one of the pistons being stuck. They noticed a scratch line mark inside the piston bore which probably was why I was losing oil and piston was now stuck and not working. That being said, I would only end up losing money for a trade in and theres no way for me to afford a new MDX at all, I told them to go ahead and find some replacement parts from a same 3.7 litre engine to bring the MDX back to Acura standards. This will end up costing between 7.000 to 9.000 thousand dollars plus taxes. Question to you is: I know that Acura had offered to replace any damaged pistons due to their recall a couple yrs ago. They had a Sept 2019 date dead line on their offer. Do you think it is worth me calling Acura to tell them of my situation and for some type of settlement payment back to me since I am putting this kind of money to keep my only automobile? Or do you think that they just say that I am out of luck due to my 200 thousand plus klms on my MDX? Kindly waiting for your reply if you can. marceldesormeaux1@gmail.com

Mine will get new catalytic converter heat shelds, including the third underbody cat, all new exhaust hardware and gaskets, an over due valve adjustment, egr cleaning, throttle bottle cleaning, etc, at the same time. Basically, a mid life tear apart and deep clean. I've had the vehicle since new, and I refuse to buy another minivan in this lifetime. I am not a mechanic but I am thinking about redoing piston rings on my car myself. I have a 2004 Honda Accord V6 6-speed. I have been doing every research and the whole process doesn't seem too hard. Just very very tedious. My car isn't burning oil. And this would be something I'd maybe do in the springtime. I did my own timing belt last year and water pump for the first time and it wasn't actually too bad at all. I'm thinking about removing the cylinder head and redoing the gaskets and cleaning the valves this month. like I said Im no mechanic so I think at my own pace it will probably take me the weekend. I have never done it before but I've fully understand what needs to be done and procedures and steps regarding new head bolts. While I'm there I'm going to do the crank pulley seals and oil pump seals which as you know require the whole oil pan to come off. I was thinking if the oil pan is off and the head is already open. Is it easy just to remove the cylinders and re-ring them? Since I'm there anyway. Do I have to rebore or sleeve?or can I just install new rings and gently slide the pistons back in. I have been heavily researching this and doing homework and I believe I can do it but those are the few questions I have

  • @youandiryan

    @youandiryan

    @@NSXavier997 yeah the car is not burning any oil at all, I will leave the rings and pistons alone then. The oil level does not move between its religious oil changes. So maybe I will just do the head and it's gaskets. And crank seals, and oil pump seal and oil pan then. Well I have the heads off maybe I will have them cleaned professionally. I have tried everything to stop the misfire when the engine is cold and it always comes back. I have done EGR cleaning, new PCV valve, valve adjustment, new valve cover gasket and tube seals, new spark plugs and coils and nothing seems to be solving the issue. the car will misfire when it's cold and run completely smooth when it's warm. So this leads me to believe either I have damaged or dirty valves, or head gasket that isn't showing typical head gasket signs

I took it to a chain "mechanic" outlet (wont say who) and they failed to catch it as well. But those bores looked really good, and you did not even run a hone thru them. So, why do J37s burn oil?

    I have a 2010 with no oil consumption problem @ 284K miles. I think if everyone used synthetic oil and serviced the PCV Valve every 30K they wouldn't have this problem. There were around 54K MDX's sold in 2010 and they all didn't need this service done including mine. It's up to the PCV Valve to pull these blowby gases from the crankcase. Notice the Blowby varnish in the front bank is far worse than the rear. There's a small tube on the rear valve cover to evacuate these gases going to the Intake tube before the Throttle body the front bank doesn't have. I suggest the PCV Valve system is a little under engineered and when you go up on CI it pushes it almost past it's limit of acceptable function. Again with the wrong oil and no PCV Valve checked like the perfect storm for this problem to develop. No one ever mentions the PCV Valve if it's Toyota or whatever brand and it's one of the major concerns when high oil consumption is a problem. Retired 3G mechanic. Xavier does an excellent job here making it look easy.... This isn't his first Rodeo.

    @NSXavierTV so if someone was doing a J37 swap, 07-09 MDX J37's is the one to swap? 07-09 MDX J37's were not listed on a website I was looking at. If not, just replace the piston and rings with oem or aftermarket and call it done.

    Correct, if you are doing an engine swap and plan to use a J37, you would want to look for one out of an 07-09 MDX for example. These first generation J37's do not have the oil consumption issues found in the second generation units. And yes, if you use a second generation J37 from a 10-13, you would benefit from swapping pistons and rings before installing it.

Decreasing the mileage / time between service intervals would help if you can find one that isn’t burning oil, if the engine is already consuming oil, it will continue to get worse. The SHAWD TL 6MT you’re talking about is one of the best Acura’s made in my honest opinion. If you could find a good one, they’re definitely worth it. My 2012 TL is about to go in for the exact same repairs covered under warranty however I suspect that I could have a burnt exhaust valve… Do the valves get inspected by mechanic upon cylinder head removal if you could chime in and let me know what exactly this guys gonna be looking for when he tears my car part… And if I do have a burnt exhaust valve cylinder number one what will be the remedial course of action? Is it mandatory to have the head resurfaced and does the valve seat need to be machined or does the valve just need to be replaced physically slid into the head and the job is complete? If you see this in time please chime in for me would be greatly appreciated thank you

  • @NSXavier997

    @NSXavier997

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you have burnt valve(s) your engine is probably misfiring. Is it? If any are burnt, then the course of action would be to replace the burnt valve(s) with new ones. It is not mandatory to have the heads resurfaced. You remove the old burnt valve(s), inspect the valve seat for damage, and if it is OK, install the new valve(s) and lap them. If there is valve seat damaged, then the cylinder head is sent off to the machine shop to have the valve seats replaced and new valves installed and lapped. I only recommend resurfacing the cylinder heads if inspection of them with a machinist straight edge and feeler gauges show that they are warped.

    First off, great video!! Appreciate you filming this. Question on this, so once you’re ready to pull the pistons out, obviously not all the rod ends are going to be flush at the bottom of the cylinder near the opening in the oil pan ( bottom of the cylinder) do you have to crank the pistons over by putting a 19mm on the crank pulley and crank the motor over to gain access to the other rods so you can remove the 2 bolts that hold the rod bearings to the rods so you can push them out, or do you can you just reach up high into the cylinders to remove the 2 bolts off those certain pistons that aren’t more flush at the bottom of the cylinder? ( sorry for the long message) just not sure on how you push all the pistons out if you can’t get to the rod bearing ends to remove the 2 bolts. Thank you!!

  • @NSXavier997

    @NSXavier997

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! You are correct, not all pistons will be at BDC, so the position of the connecting rods will only allow access and removal of the rod bolts for two cylinders at a time. You rotate the crank shaft using a ratchet or a wrench to turn the 19MM harmonic damper bolt which then rotates the crankshaft and brings the pistons lower in the bore which then gives you access to the bolts you need to remove. Once the rod caps are removed, you can rotate the crankshaft so the piston then travels to TDC and you push them out from that position using a small hammer and long extension with a piece of rubber at the end. I push them out in cylinder pairs while keeping track of my rod caps, bolts and any rod bearings that may pop out. Though on different engine cycles, the pistons that share the same TDC and BDC are 1&5, 2&6, 3&4. Meaning you are able to access, loosen and remove the rod bolts with those cylinder pairs at the same time.

    Head to your nearest ACURA dealership and request them to run a VIN status inquiry. If the pistons have been done under warranty extension, then under the section titled "Closed Campaign/Recall Information", it will list "19-052" with a "C" beside it. If you don't see that then I highly doubt it has been done. To answer your question yes, all J37 engines will exhibit this problem at some point.

    Oil consumption will continue. Eventually the excessive carbon build up will become severe enough to increase static compression ratio. This will result in very poor fuel economy and the engine exhibiting engine ping under load. Once the oil control rings completely seize, then the risk of cylinder bore scoring becomes an issue. When that happens then the cylinder(s) will be permanently damaged, and will cause a loss of compression & misfire. At that point it is too late and the short block will need to be replaced.

    This "fix" will help with oil consumption for a short while at best. The reason for most cases of excessive oil consumption is in the engine design. The cylinder walls are coated with Nikasil instead of iron sleeves. Nikasil (Nickel Silicon Carbide) is much harder than steel. It was popular for a while among "leading, innovative, performance-oriented" car manufacturers. And Acura blindly followed the lead. Once a thin Nikasil layer wears off ( and sooner or later it does) and exposes bare soft aluminum below, no pistons or rings will help you. These engines, therefore, are not rebuildable. You need a brand new block. And that's what Acura reluctantly did for some customers. Soon enough, reports of engines burning oil after block replacement appeared. Failing to admit a big blunder in designing these engines, Acura insisted for a long time that consumption of 1 qt of oil per 1000 miles is acceptable and even expected. Of course, they stopped making J37A engines. Lawers did what they do and Acura avoided a massive buyback of their luxury oil burners by settling a class action suit. What a treachery. P.S. Good luck finding a new J37A block. Ain't nobody got one.

    🥱 Circa 2009: EPA: we demand better fuel economy Honda: Ok, we’ll try and squeeze out everything we can by designing this J37 the way we did. The draw back will be premature wear due to low friction rings and cylinder liners. 7 years later engines are burning oil and customers are crying, and Honda was just trying something new to meet the EPA requirements. More examples of this can be found with DFI. You ever look at the back of the intake valves on a DFI engine? EPA demanded better fuel economy; automotive manufactures try things out. Honda R&D’s things a certain way for a reason.. and it’s not to make things fail at a certain time so people have to buy a new car. You think their goal was to get a class action lawsuit? An automotive manufacturers main goal is customer retention, and the last thing they would want to do is produce a bad product. Think what you will of this “fix”, but the fact of the matter is that Honda released the piston and ring warranty extension to appease their customers over an issue that can be traced back to the ridiculous requirements the EPA had at the time. These cars have been in service since 2010 and 100’s of thousands of miles. Things don’t last forever. But J series engines have been around since the late 80’s. Blindly followed the lead… gtfo

    Did you replace with the exact same piston and rings with the same tolerances? What’s to stop it from happening again? My son’s car is in the same situation but the extended service warranty is no longer in effect. I’m looking to do what I can to mitigate the issue.

    Yes I did per the repair procedure published by American Honda. To settle the class action lawsuit, American Honda’s objective was to issue the recall warranty extension which when performed, immediately remedies the problem of excessive oil consumption. It was never designed or meant to permanently fix it. So yes, assuming the vehicle is used in the same manner and the composition of fuel and oil being used remains the same, the problem will likely manifest again. I have done away with the maintenance minder system on my own personal 2013 MDX and have moved to a “50% oil change interval” and only use top tier 93 octane fuels. This my attempt of extending the life of the new components I installed on it when I did the recall. Please reach out to me if you’re interested in sending your sons car to me for this work to be done. I have recently begun taking these jobs in to breathe new life into oil burners. @NSXavier on Instagram, Rennlist, 6speedonline. PrecisionCraftedMaintenance@gmail.com

    You failed to see the huge wear mark on the first cylinder (top left in view). You didn't hone the bores either. This will have fixed the aforementioned problem because without this, that cylinder WILL burn oil. It has a deep wear mark in it where oil will bypass the rings and be burned.

    Show me on the Technical Service Bulletin that’s published by American Honda where it says to hone the cylinder bores. This is a warranty repair. You have to follow the procedure the way it’s written or risk warranty debit after the fact.

    So what did cost to get that done? $100 per/hr @ 5hrs $250 pistons/rings/rod bearing $50 oil/filter $30 coolant $20 steering fluid $850 total overhaul Because I would take my car to you right now for that price. So what did you actually charge the customer?

    You don’t have to ridge the cylinder ends? Or hone the walls?

    Have you got an idea on what would happen if the excessive oil consumption was just dealt with by continuing to monitor oil levels and topping up as required. Would it get worse over time or lead to engine failure? Or would it settle to a baseline rate and continue to work?

    If the rings are seized to the piston the way they are in many of these engines with excessive carbon build up, they will not have the ability to rotate freely around the piston. In this scenario, over time, the cylinder bores will become damaged and that will lead to low compression, and thus, poor engine performance and ultimately engine failure.

    The problem is that after replacing the pistons, you need to change the oil on 30-40%oil life . And there will be no consumption.
