Actuary vs Accountant - 4 Major Differences!

Accountants analyze the flow of money through an organization and actuaries analyze risk and its financial consequences. If you enjoy working with numbers, then becoming an actuary or an accountant are both viable options.
But, what is the difference between these two careers?
The primary difference is that actuaries predict the financial impact of events that may or may not occur in the future, whereas accountants deal with the financial impact of events that have already occurred.
Many people assume that they’re similar jobs, but they differ in terms of the type of work they do, salary, education requirements, and employment opportunities.
In this video, I'll be talking about all these differences and how you can decide which career would be a good fit for you!

Management accountants look to the future as well. This video is really a comparison between actuaries and financial accountants, specifically. It is Certified Public Accountant if you mean the US CPA

11:50 wait but there are also far fewer actuaries than accountants in the US so isn’t the level of competitiveness only slightly tilted towards actuaries?

That's true, but in general there is a larger demand for accountants. And the actuarial profession is a lucrative path especially as more people learn about this career option!

Hi Dear How do you push me forward to be a good actuarial as I'm not enough familiar with Actuarial sciences? I have good background with maths.

It's great that you have a strong background in math-that's a solid foundation for actuarial science! Start by familiarizing yourself with key actuarial concepts like probability, statistics, and financial mathematics. Look into study materials for actuarial exams and consider joining a study group or finding a mentor in the field. Remember, everyone starts somewhere, and your math skills give you a great head start. Keep pushing forward, and don't hesitate to seek help when needed. You’ve got this!

Controller is a more obvious alternative to actuary than accountant is, don't you think? So you might want to do an "actuary vs controller" video thing. This could be interesting, not just for me.

Thanks for your suggestion! I appreciate your interest in the differences between these careers. Comparing actuaries and controllers is a great idea for a video. Both roles involve analyzing financial data, but actuaries focus on assessing risk and uncertainty, often in insurance and pensions, while controllers oversee financial reporting and budgeting in organizations. Highlighting these differences could indeed be interesting and helpful for many people considering a career in actuarial science. I'll definitely consider it for a future video!

Hi Paul! In general, Actuarial Science degrees are usually fine to enter an MBA in Finance. But just so you know, I actually don't recommend getting a Master's if you want to become an actuary! Check out this article for more info: etchedactuarial.com/no-masters-actsci/

Your video is so biased on actuaries that im laughing. Have you even talked to big 4 accountants? If ur comparing ppl who have completed actuarial exams to earn $250k, ur assuming they r the brightest pack of your field. Then, on the same token, u should also compare the brightest pack of accountants who made it to partner level at big 4, not just some random back office accountant working at ur insurance firms for 15+ years. Those who are willing to grind and make partner after 10-15 yrs on avr earn 300k+ at least on an annual basis. Also, for those looking for a job in the financial industry, actuaries and accountants are jokes. Go look at what capital markets (investment bankers, sales and trading, corporate bankers, private equity) and management consultants are earning. All start with 6 figs fresh grad and you dont even need to write these stupid exams. Rule of thumb: if ur just prepping financial statements (accountants job), that's back office; if ur managing risk, that's mid office, the only way to earn the biggest buck in financial industry is to be front office (aka doing sales, bringing in clients) which is why accountants and actuaries are usually not even preferred by the brightest kids.

Yeah most hedge fund managers are not accountants and actuaries. Most are sales people. It's all about convincing people to give you their money so you can get some capital appreciation on them and charge them fees for your "service".

I disagree with her and with you. In terms of salaries your average actuary > average accountant whereas your Top accountant> Top actuary. The reason for this your accountant can become the CFO of a company and latter CEO. Actuaries can become CRO's and maybe CEO. Why do I say maybe? Because it depends on the nature of the business for example you won't see the CEO of McDonald's to be an actuary, there won't be much you use for him there. Actuaries are more likely to become CEO of a pension fund, Hedge fund, Insurance company ect. The accountant has a broader understanding of business so they are more useful in CEO positions than a actuary.

KYC10 and random stuff I don't agree with you two. Let me put it in very simply language. Would you two give your money to a hedge fund manager that is a sales person? (I am laughing) You need to be a bloody idiot to give your money to a sales person oh sorry mistype "hedge fund manager". It's true he/she knows how to bring in money and that there are sales people in hedge fund companies or asset management companies but, they are like the pawns in the game of chess they are certainly not the king or queen in the game of business. They bring in money and that is all they can do. Yes, millions of dollars but, how much is profit? What about taxes, cost of sales, other expenses made to sell that product. Also, sales people are paid a commission on the amount they sell 10% or whatever the amount might be. In my opinion being a sales person might be easier to become and easier to get a job but your are alot more limited to where you will end up unless you study further or start your own company. I don't argue that there are successful sales people making millions. It's always funny to watch how these rich sales people try to convince you they are very clever business people when in fact they are just salesperson.

The part you left out about those other jobs is the long hours they work, so their effective hourly rate might only be slightly higher than actuaries. Entry level investment bankers making 100k out of school are putting in 80 hour weeks, conservatively. That's a pretty meh effective hourly rate, especially for all the time and stress from working that many hours in a high pressure environment. Actuary, where you can pace your self learning much easier, is much more chill and the payoff is still really good... Also those "stupid exams" work to gatekeep the profession and keep salaries high in the field, so they serve a useful purpose.
