Actress Gina Torres on Hollywood’s colorism problem
Many Latin American countries have large Black communities, and in the U.S. alone there are about 6 million adults who identify as Afro-Latino. But Hollywood isn’t writing Afro-Latino roles or casting Afro-Latino actors. In a recent analysis of the 1,300 top grossing films from 2007 to 2019, only 6 lead roles were held by Afro-Latinos. “We need to see ourselves in film…If we can see ourselves then we feel like we have value,” John Leguizamo says.

"Preferably with an accent, so there's no confusion" 😂 I love Gina. Call it out!
The problems Afro-Latinos face in Hollywood (and elsewhere) are very real. It must be exhausting having to explain where you come from over and over again, that's just one of the reasons why teaching real history matters. I do remember Gina played Cleopatra in an episode of Xena:Warrior Princess in 1997, years before getting a role on Alias so there were at least *some* opportunities for her to shine pre-2001.

Such a shame, especially since she has always been and is just gorgeous inside and out. I’ve seen her in so many things but believe she should have been in much more.
Gina Torres was the sparkplug on "Firefly"... brava!
Once people find out that I'm Latina, my blackness gets erased. I absolutely hate that. I'm glad that we're having more conversations about being both.

@Mistress Mary this is America, and you are free to feel whatever you feel. Just as I am. Whatever anybody ELSE feels about me, my heritage is whatever it is just as yours is. The problem comes in when one group of people denigrates and dehumanizes another group of people. I'm not claiming to be more or less than anybody else. I'm just claiming the cultures that make me me.
I've been inspired by this beautiful actor since the early 2000s, and I'm happy to see her flourishing and speaking out on this issue.
Jill Biden will not be pleased with all these Breakfast Tacos on TV 🌮
Everyone is an individual....putting people in groups is racist.
As a Afro Latino it always become a discussion well how are you Latino or are you mixed and then it becomes a whole education session
Great conversation. That’s why you need to throw away labels. She is what she is, beautiful at that. I’m Latina. So then it’s what kind of Latina, well we’re all over. My cousins are half Polish, in the 40’s my Uncle married a beautiful white woman. He was a tall, handsome light toned man of Native American and Spanish decent. So really what is the point? At this point in time, opportunities to mix is everywhere. No constraints of travel. Who knows where our ancestors have travelled and what circumstances arose that continued the lives of many more to come. Gina, you’re beautiful and hold yourself gracefully. You go girl!
Gina Torres is So talented, smart and beautiful!
Eva Moreno wanted to play the lead role in the King & I, she told her agent she could do it, they told her "sorry Eva you are a Latina the audience will see you only as a Latina". The part went to Deborah Kerr.
Gina Torres makes me sick. Watch "Suits" season 3 Episode 15. She played the Clarence Thomas role of viciously attacking diversity.

Mostly. Still need to be able to act of course. Some people may be beautiful, but are still terrible actors. Sometimes it's also up to actually getting a good script and director. Some good actors got burned by being put in really bad movies I think. Some actors just get typecast because of a particular role, or roles. not entirely sure there's anything you can necessarily "fix" because a lot of projects are just godawful cash grabs, like all the remakes of what are considered classics and such.

Well it's time racial stereotypes die, not only are they false, they don't actually reflect real life. Its not fair to erase people & their cultural backgrounds just because simple minded folks haven't got out & left their small towns.
I’m am an African-Native American female who grew up in Brooklyn in the 1950’s. At that time there was no visual representation of me or my family in any entertainment or commercial media. With nothing there that reflects you, then how do you know who are you or where you belong?

Well, times have certainly changed. I grew up on a rez and there's almost no blacks in my area. Yet 50 percent of all main characters and a good 30 percent of all cast members are black. If a person had no idea what the racial demographic of this country was, they would think that America is 30 percent black and about 2 percent brown. My point is that the way liberal Hollywood portrays race is just as effed up now as it was back then

I like both of these actors. But they just said 6 million Afro latinas in America and then they said the nu ber of lead rules for latinoafro actors and statistically it aligns if not slightly under. Which is expected for a small growing minority. Same with asian Americans. Or Indian Americans. Or native Indian Americans. They're all under represented to white americans but thats because they're statistically significantly less. So it's an issue but it's not as bas as is sometimes made out and films... are nothing compared fo TV and KZread. Where there is a much higher and often over representation of some minority groups. Cool talk either way and both good looking actors need to talk about the lack of leads who are disabled and or ugly...
As an African American, it's confusing for me to understand the difference between Afro Latino and African and African American. Especially because I didn't understand the meaning behind Hispanic. As a kid, I would always ask if I'm supposed to put African American or Black or Hispanic Black not knowing what it meant.

Granular definition seems to always apply to Black and Brown looking people but almost never to Caucasian. I’ve never had to worry about how people will perceive me when I’m outside of the U.S. because other cultures do not define by skin color.
