Okay so while this is amazing and hilarious just to be clear 2:29 is the Megasix from Six the Musical. Literally everywhere except Broadway (this clip in this video is from the West End) you are allowed to film this. They even say “Get your phones out you’re gonna wanna film this). The US cast did this too until they got to New York where Actors Equity told them they couldn’t do that anymore. SO just saying that clip was not technically a bootleg and the actors were very much aware they were being filmed. Go look some Megasix’s they get really into it

@@ashleycorona9210 yeah literally every cast (West End, UK Tour, Bliss, Breakaway and Australia) can and ask the audience to film the Megasix which is the song after bows. The Broadway cast asked multiple times for it to be the same but Actors Equity said no. If you watch some of the many videos out there some of the actors get very up close and personal and have fun with front row audience members 😊

@@professorwright1428 there’s only one Megasix video from the US cast in New York and it’s from their first preview. That video is shot from the balcony since it is a bootleg. Any other Megasix’s with the Broadway cast are from their North American tour or sit down in Chicago where they were allowed to film. It wasn’t until they actually got to New York City that AE told them they weren’t allowed to film on Broadway.

tbh i used to be against bootlegs until i realized how inaccessible theater (esp broadway) is. ppl watching “slime tutorials” arent really taking money from the show because 90% of the time theyre doing it because they could never afford to see it in person anyway. you cant “lose” theoretical money you never had. if broadway wants people to stop making boot legs they should start releasing proshots so we have ways to legally see the show that dont cost an arm and a leg.

he stares down the entire audience very slowly scanning them left to right through the whole number, it's part of the staging. He talks about it in an interview. It's unlikely he saw the camera. That clip is just at the exact moment he was scanning the area of the audience where the camera was.

I've seen the new guys do it on broadway, the tour, and my friend was understudying for this part on the angelica tour and he told me himself that they tell you in rehearsals that this is what you're supposed to do, it's part of the direction from the director.

Yea. . . I had seen that one before (especially before doing theater) and I was scared, and now that I know the importance of timing and everything, him quickly saying that in the dark and getting so close scares me even more.

I've done musical theatre before and you can spot a phone very easily we just don't say anything most the time 😂😂😂

I think proshots should be released when a show closes or on an anniversary, so people who might not be able to experience the show in person for whatever reason can enjoy them too, and possibly minimize the amount of bootlegers.

I think at least like 5 years after a show closes, otherwise some people who would have the means to see the show don’t to save money (I don’t necessarily mean rich people. I mean people who might have to save for a few months to afford going)

Also can we talk about bootlegs for a second. I'm in theatre. I get it. Revenue and people actually going to the theatre and its distracting and all that stuff BUT how many of these actors relied on bootlegs to see shows when they were training? Probably all of them. There's a reason Broadway audiences are mostly older and more well off financially. Like the actual people that will eventually become these Broadway actors are not the majority of the audiences because shows are so expensive. I'm not saying it should be allowed because I don't want everyone with their phones out all the time ovi. But the "put that away" comment just seamed so off color to me. Thoughts?

I totally agree with you. So many actors HAVE actually asked people for bootlegs of their shows because they miss broadway. Bootlegs don’t hurt Broadway financially because no one acts like a boot is better then watching the actual show. Like I would much rather watch a show live then in a video form but I just can’t afford it.

I think if anyone had the means to watch a live show they would 100% do it but a lot of us just can't (we don't have those musicals in my country), so yeah, I don't see why people complain about that part, it's not like it's gonna replace the actual experience.

I think that was mostly because it was from the front row and was kinda distracting for the actors. Will Roland has said some stuff about bootleggers in the past but I think he got somewhat used to them in the end, just that front row is kinda distracting

honestly the majority of the fans come from bootlegs, i don't think most of them would ever be interested in seeing a musical, if they didn't know what's going to happen in them and spend lots of money on it, too. theater is seen as an old people thing

@@cerealwithnutella2567 if it doesn't have a flash, then it shouldn't be distracting you. an actor's job is also to stay focused on what you're doing. the outside world does not matter, you need to stay in the story. otherwise, everything will distract you. a baby crying in a kid's show, someone coughing, someone leaving their seat to go to the bathroom...

I think I physically felt my heart stop when will roland said put that away. I felt like groveling and begging for forgiveness and it wasn't even me!

Honestly, if i were to see a musical on broadway i wouldn't even think of filming it. I mean sure, great for memories, re-watch when you want to but I'm not a risk taker myself. I would just want to enjoy it and live in the moment. I also can't afford Barett, Lin and Taylor staring at me like that 😶

What people don't seem to realise is, the entire seating area is dark and the phone lights your face up like a beacon.

That's why most of these are low quality- the few people who actually can film very well are among those few people because they don't get caught.

Bootlegging is so morally grey in my opinion, because obviously it’s wrong for people to watch something for free at the expense of the actors’ paycheck, but at the same time so many people either can’t afford to see it, or don’t even live in the country where it’s performed, so they’d never be able to pay to see it anyway (believe me, if I had the money to see a show live I would definitely see it instead of watching a bootleg), plus bootlegs give the musical more recognition. I had never seen Heathers before, but after I watched the bootleg I’m now desperate to see it live. So I must admit, I have no idea where I stand on the bootlegging argument, but then I’m not a stage actor (I wish I was though), so I’m just talking from the perspective of a broke theatre kid. In conclusion: Starkid is superior.

My favorite one of these isn't in this, but there's a bootleg floating around of DEH where Ben Platt looks directly into the camera for several seconds and then just SHRUGS. the absolute power of it.

Tbh if I’m ever on broadway I would never saying anything about leg booters (unless they were being super distracting like having a flash on or something) bc there’s a ton of elitism in theatre and not everyone can go see a play let along the og cast or nyc so until there is away to legally veiw every show leg boots should continue

The problem is if they notice you filming, you’re distracting them. I think a lot of actors don’t have an actual problem with bootlegs - it’s the actual act of filming that’s the problem. People will use flash, lights will hit the phone and shine into their eyes, etc. It can also be dangerous if the stage has moving parts.

the will roland one had it coming. why would you ever try to record when you're in the front row???

I have tourettes and cant really go to big shows without fearing someone getting mad at me for disturbing the show, so I do apreciate slime videos. I understand theres the idea of piracy and how its technically stealing, but I dont think heathers or Hamilton will really miss my ticket or anything.

in some slime tutorials you can see them eye the camera and then when their mics go off they sometimes start telling other cast members, and then they look over subtly too. its quite funny to watch. ive noticed it a bunch in mean girls bootlegs!

they’re doing god’s work imo. no one who can afford to go see a broadway show isn’t going to ~not~ go bc there’s a crappy bootleg available. it just helps out the less privileged. as long as they’re not selling it for personal profit they’re good in my book. artists should want their art to be shared with as many people as possible, not get pissy bc poorer people might get to see it for free.

I heard a rumor a while ago that the actors are actually taught to stare at a bootlegger if they spot one to sort of clue the theatre staff that somebody in the audience is doing something the shouldn’t be….

I love how everyone else is staying in character but the six actors are like “oooh someone is filming me HIIIIIEIEEEEEE 👋😘”

the people who would understand and feel the emotion of the musical the best are people who cant afford to go see it. i bet at least 60% of the Hamilton fanbase has not actually been to a show. the average price of tickets is $562 💀 you think all those Hamilton obsessed teens can afford that?? especially if they don't live in the area a show is happening. why settle for just listening to the soundtrack and seeing random clips online when you can watch a bootleg (although it's poorly recorded most times)? that's honestly so unfair. especially since there's usually never a professional recording online to buy. I'm sure plenty of people would buy it, but I've never seen that for any mainstream musical. other than Hamilton of course, but that was a long time after the musical first premiered, and it's not even straightforward. you have to buy Disney+ and you legit cant view it on a free trial. anyways rant over i hate it here

Randomly on my recommended but i’m glad because just cause i saw a bootleg doesn’t mean i won’t ever wanna see the ACTUAL live performance if i ever have the money or if it comes back on. What i think could help this is if they just do a pro-shot and sell it like Hamilton did, it still won’t really stop people from going to broadway because ofc being actually there is a whole other experience like watching a movie in a theater vs at home.. and that way the actors will still get revenue from people buying the pro shots online

Same! I just watched a slime of anastasia for the first time and I remember back in 2017 when it was on broadway how depressed I was that I couldn’t go because 1) I’m poor 2) I live 13,000 km away and I feel so happy after watching the bootleg but also guilty cos it’s a bootleg!

I have worked backstage in musical theatre and filming is REALLY obvious most of the time. A lot of actors hate it as it puts pressure on them if they miss a note or entrance knowing it is on film. More shows should do recordings though like Hamilton have done so that people who have little chance of watching the show can still see it!

I was once watching Dear Evan Hansen with my mother and I swear the guy playing Evan stared at me one or two times, I wasn’t filming anything, he just kept glancing back at the very corner of the theater where I sat, even my mom noticed it

Especially say, coming from the cast of Hamilton... like they were struggling... Sure. Not only do many actors refer to and train with bootlegs themselves, but many people will never get to see a show and travel to NYC and crappy boots are the only way that's possible.

Actually, some legboots have preserved shows like Heathers. I remember Barret Wilbert Weed (Veronica) saying in an interviee that she was glad leg boots existed, because heathers was a show that died so early and those ilegal videos preserved her work on a show she loved so much

@@Maliekka I had no clue what Heathers was, as I was too young to know the movie, and I only heard of it because of people talking about a bootleg. I watched it, and now it’s easily in my top 3. Animatics have also helped with experiencing theater, but it isn’t the same as watching the actors preform, whether in person or on video. I know that bootlegs are illegal, but I personally can’t be against them. They preserve so many good shows, and they give some wonderful experiences for fans to watch, even if it’s low quality.

There's a point in the West End Heathers bootleg where Jamie, the actor playing JD, just stared at the camera for a few seconds and my heart stopped lmao.

If you're wondering when it happens it's after they kill Heather Chandler and are chilling at JD's house. They're sitting on some steps watching the TV and he has the remote in his hand. It's right before you hear his dad get home which makes JD jump up and ask if Veronica wants to go get ice cream. I'm pretty sure the bootleg is called "Crazy girl breaks into boys house to have sex then they kill 3 people" and I think it's part 2 out of the 4 parts.

sometimes they even take the audiences phones when recording and the whole cast just plays around with it then they give it back

Yeah, that’s true for almost all productions of six (including the one in this video). So, you’re right. However, people are technically banned from recording the broadway Megasix. They even changed the line where they encourage people to get their phones out and film this.

I love how Kyle is just casually singing Stupid With Love Reprise and then angrily looks at the camera and sings "BUT END UP ACTING LIKE A TOOL!"

Literally as an actor who hopes to be on bway, im down with bootlegs, i watch em all the time!

the way people prepare for roles is watching bootlegs so i don't hate or love them

There's a great one in the bootleg for original London production of Hairspray. During 'Velma's revenge', Velma keeps not only looking at the camera but even points to it at one point in character. It's actually really funny

I am of the volition that Bootleggers are the fuel of the majority of the Musical Theater Communities and I salute them

I love the variety of musicals shown off here. But also if Patrick Page looked right at me while singing I think I'd be paralyzed with fear.

Honestly if I was in theatre and someone was bootlegging I really wouldn’t be that mad about it especially if it’s a last performance for that cast or for one of the main actors

this gives me anxiety like I was the one doing it and they're getting mad at me :D

I think bootlegs are a huge part in becoming an icon/star on Broadway

the video of six at 2:26 is allowed to be filmed actually! they sing 'get your phones out your gonna wanna film this' except for the broadway megasix sadly

I love how groff always insists on just. staring down the camera the entire time he's on stage. and he always finds them. I don't think I've ever seen a boot of a show he's in where he isn't just making unbreakable eye contact with the camera the entire time

what i find funny is that lin manuel miranda looked at the camera and probably thought can't you wait a little while, i'm having this turned into an official film. lmao

Honestly, nobody would choose to watch a bootleg over seing an in-persin show if they were able to do so. Theatre needs to be made more accessible so that people don't need to make them.

they are staring into our souls. i feel that they are genuinely disappointed in us

if I ever get on broadway (we're talking impossible) I'll def stare at bootlegers just for their happiness

As someone in the theatre industry we will often stare at a bootlegger to 1.scare them into putting it away 2. Get an idea of what row/seat there in so when we are in the wings we can alert someone

Majority of these don’t look like the actor staring down the lens, they just happen to look in the same direction momentarily

Actors sometimes have a motion to tell people backstage there is a bootlegger so security can find then in the crowd. They are pretty easy to spot, specially if you're being starred at haha

Imagine Hades looking right at you during “His Kiss, The Riot” I’d run away

The one in Spongebob is actually kinda funny, because the whole purpose of the Spongebob musical is every character being self aware that they are performing. Like Spongebob literally says hello to the the live sound and music directors. So to have Plankton look directly at the camera knowing his evil genius plan is going everywhere fits his character too well…

i just love how pippa, derek, and groff appear on here multiple times

I love how even though they hate bootleggers some of them have so much fun with it

I think bootlegs are definitely the reason why people all over the world visit broadway

Most of these guys were probably just thankful to have a focus point in the audience that wasn’t middle distance or some poor dudes face

Bootlegging is a necessary evil because they don’t make damn pro shoots when a run ends and going to nyc is expensive

Ramin knows when there is a bootlegger. In Les Mis he'd just death stare the bootlegger as a "I know what you are doing".

I am glad there are bootlegs around there, if it wasnt for there I wouldnt be able to watch alot of musicals, and I am sure that a lot of people are glad too!

The thing about the "bootlegs bad for broadway bleh" argument is that it relies on the assumption that the viewer watching the bootleg, which gives them whiplash and looks like it was filmed on a Nintendo DSi comes out on the other side thinking "Ah, yes. I have experienced broadway at its finest."

If anything I think bootlegs make more people want to see them live. I have never once wanted to spend money on seeing a show I don't even know if I'll enjoy? I only ever beg my parents to buy me tickets to musicals I already adore
