Activo CT10 Digital Audio Player Review - Sega Saturn Edition

Ғылым және технология

I needed a new Digital Audio Player (DAP) so imported an Activo CT10 from Japan - here's a review.
A few of the Sega Saturn themed versions might still be available on Amazon Japan - here's a non-affiliated link: www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B...
If you can live without a Sega case you can buy a CT10 locally from Amazon via the following Affiliated links:

UK: amzn.to/2mfJNMu
CA: amzn.to/2nfXFq8
DE: amzn.to/2lNgPTU

Or you could always skip it and pre-order a Limited Edition Sony 40th Anniversary Digital Audio Player Walkman from one of these Amazon Affiliated Links instead:

EXTRA INFO:
Music downloaded through a WiFi App automatically gets stored on the built in memory on the device - and as that's just 16GB, this is a limitation. However in the Apple Music app you can choose to have the music download to the SD card instead. So as long as your app has similar capabilities you should be OK. Bigger screens and longer range (iPod)/higher bandwidth (flip phone) radio transceivers will use more power. You could get your iPhone battery to last for days if you kept it in airplane mode with the screen off, but you lose the point of using an iPhone over using the others.

I totally agree with the concept of keeping things separate. For music I still use my good old Hi-MD Walkman and if I want to take real quality pictures I use my DSLR. Sure the phone can do all that but I sometimes just prefer a dedicated device for a task.

  • @TheRealD4

But there are times when if you're out and about its nice to listen to music and take pictures... thus better to carry one smartphone. Therefore you are buying these separate devices in addition not instead of a smartphone. (DSLR is a separate issue obviously) But for music why would you buy this when a decent smartphone will sound as good with modern phone DAC's... plus it's nice to listen to KZread music with data plan anywhere which this device can't achieve lol...

@Old Liquid I mean there was that Hollywood movie that was filmed entirely with iPhones. And it looked pretty great. They're good enough for casual users. Obviously dedicated photographers will get dedicated devices but the photo quality of modern smartphones are great. There's nothing wrong with them. Don't worry about it too much. People who are serious hobbyists or do it for a living aren't using smartphones anyway so why does it matter?

  • @charlescampuz5812

Old Liquid But they are convenient for the average consumer & that’s really what matters in most cases. DSLR Cameras are pretty bulky, so I wouldn’t lug that thing around unless it’s for a party or a vacation trip. A small, compact phone is good enough for the less important stuff.

Interesting use case, although here's my suggestion, buy an old phone like an LG v20 or v30 or something, you can find them used in decent condition for about $100 or less then open it to physically remove the cameras inside it (maybe even use some black paint over the lens), now you can use it as an mp4 player and not only could you find a dock that works with android phones, you'd have all the features of an android phone like wifi, apps, maybe even the occasional text/message every once in awhile. Although even with the cameras gone you should probably still notify your boss about it first.

8:57 The software looks to me almost like a stripped down version of Android, kinda like with the Likebook firmware but for a music player and without support for user installed apps. 10:25 Knew it! 12:04 So it basically becomes a modern-day iPod that can stream songs over Wi-Fi? 14:27 That reminds me of when I would listen to music on my Likebook Mimas (a digital notebook device), where not only does its audio jack lack a 4th pin for the microphone (and subsequently, inline controls), but there's interference when the display updates (I believe it uses a IT8951 controller connected to an ES103TC1 panel). To be fair, the one I have is one of the first production run models that has a white shell instead of a black one. 15:13 In the case of my Likebook, it would've said, "Connected to, The Inky Monster!" 15:52 Aggghhhhhhhhhhhh 😩😩 I wish I could ditch my iPod 6th gen for that, or a regular NW-A100, but I can't afford one currently… and at least if I were to get one, I know I wouldn't need to restart into Windows just to manage the music that's on it…

Since this seems to be the perfect audio option and that I am also deeply in love with the Sega saturn I will have to find a way to get one! If I need a "Stand-alone"-DAP (in some very rare cases where I don't want to use my main phone - wich also has headphone jack and very goog quality): I STILL have a 9 year old Samsung Galaxy S1 from 2010! Have it running on original Android 2.3, rooted it, deleted all the Stock-Apps except the Stock music player (which is very decent!) and the radio-app. Added the old "Voodoo Sound"-Mod, that just enables all the settings of the built-in Wolfson WM8994-DAC-Amp. - Stock-Player plays: MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG, FLAC, WAV - 1200mV RMS output level - runs perfect even with large SD-cards (128GB tested) (...okay, it doesn't support "HiRes", and "only" delivers about 10 Ohm Output-impedance - but all in all a very decent old "DAP") :)

    @Gubel1990

    4 жыл бұрын

@bookshelffury Yes, but in my case I STILL can, and I DO, and I will in the next few years! Cause I'm not a "hardcore user" and only do just "normal" things with my phone, currently I'm still using a old (software- and battery- modified ;) ) Samsung S4 Mini VE/Plus/2015 (not the old one - that was bad!), and my next phone will be a Galaxy S10e imported from Hongkong (rootable Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC) next year, when it gets a little cheaper - still with 3,5mm-jack + FM-radio! Short statement to FM-radio in smartphones: Sadly it gets really difficult today with "real" radio in "modern" smartphones, yes... On the one hand it's just not possible to receive without using wired headphones as antenna (neither FM on VHF2, nor DAB(+) on VHF3) - beacause of the wavelength, just physics. On the other hand, no manufacturer seems to integrate it in smartphones with only USB-C anymore (these STUPID "trend" of removing the 3,5mm-jack!), even it should still be possible to connect it as an antenna like the 3,5mm. There are still some "midrange"-phones that have integrated FM + audio-jack - e.g. in the Samsung A-Series, some Motorola/Lenovo, and some others...even if nearly no "flagship" (except the US/China Galaxy S, or the LG) seems to have it anymore. Another downside is, that on many phones still have it, it's barely usable, cause the amp/mixer-gain is set very low, so you won't get any decent volume out of it. This can only be "solved" by editing the mixer-config-file, which can only be done via root. It also depends on the Chipset used, how good or usable the radio-reception is in practical, cause the receiver is integrated in the SoC-Chipset together with other wireless standards: The newer Samsung "mid-range" phones with Exynos that still have it, tend to be just "okeey" - very late and sluggish stereo-/mono-switching (this seems to be hard-coded in the chipset). The "high-end" Exynos just don't have that functionality anyway. Qualcom Snapdragon-SoCs ALL have it integrated, but not always hardware-implemented by the manufacturer. With this Chipsets, my experiences in stereo-FM-reception-quality was very surprisingly GOOD! FM-quality via AUX is nearly as good as with my HiFi-tuner... (So my my next phone will be a Hongkong-Galaxy-S10e - *not only* for this reason... :) ) Best regards from germany!

Probably just paying for the DAC and op-amps, yeah. The screen and buttons are obviously not super high end. I think the Sony player mentioned at the end has an OLED screen though. But that's even more expensive. I guess also there's the AptX HD licensing fee. You'd hope some of the money went to better isolating audio traces on the circuit board(s) too, but if What Hi-fi's review unit is typical it doesn't seem they did that. The last extra cost is from being relatively low-volume, which really drives things up even when the component cost is not super up there. Basically: yes

Personally, I'm a fan of the FiiO X5iii, which is quite similar but has two SD card slots and the option of a coax output (which I like, but not everyone would be that fussed about it). What the FiiO doesn't have is a cool retro look - well, some of FiiO's earlier models do, but only in an iPod Classic sort of way. Anyway, pleased to see a DAP getting the Techmoan treatment.

@@dylanmcintyre0502 That thing was a joke IMO. The first time I saw it I was like, "Oh wow, cool! They built it to look like a real Walkman!" Then I saw it was just a softcover. Weak. This thing looks pretty cool but purely for it's practicality and usefulness. The Saturn scheme is "whatever" unless you're a Saturn fan, I honestly wouldn't mind one but for less than $230.

@@dsandoval9396 yeah its definitely pricey for a device that does one thing. I mean if it does that one thing very well it might be worth it but even then not to the average consumer.

the Astell&Kern A&Norma SR15 retails for $700, and this is essentially the same parts inside an uglier device, so for $230 its a steal IMO. The A&K/iRiver players are great.
