Activity to rest ratios 💤

Hi friends! In this vlog I discuss rest and recovery and what it looks like for me as an #ActuallyAutistic and chronically ill person, #PeeMath and why I won't be watching Endgame in theatre, and an #OwnVoices book recommendation.

Yes! until i realized I was autistic, I never knew why I would suddenly feel horrible, depressed, and cranky after a while around others. Now I know why my mood just plummets! I call it my 'social battery'- and after a while it just runs out!

Hi, Tracey. In case you happen to read this here very comment, does this exchange too count as a stressor to an extent that you'll need to recover from, or does that only apply to leaving home? Just curious. Thanks.

Too many people don't understand that people have a work to rest ratio, or how that can effect an individual's overall health. And even more of them don't care enough to respect that or listen. My mother is that way, and she's well aware that I'm autistic too, but always thinks I'm being lazy when I try to take a break after going out and about.

Try forwarding her this video. Often times parents feel a pressure to help their children to cope with society and "getting permission" from outside to change behaviour can help them to relax. When my first son was born I was given a book that helped me immensely in listening to the needs of my children over the expectations from our surroundings. If anyone questioned my approach I could point to the book and say "This wise guy told me it's ok". Maybe they didn't become convinced, but at least I knew that I was not alone in being nontraditional :-)

And bear in mind that it is a 25 year old book. He has written a couple of books since then, and they might be worth checking out too. I hope you see this. I want to thank you so much for making all these videos. I wish I had found you sooner. I'm a mom to a 3 year old and 1 year old, and I'm pretty sure they both have autism. With my 3 year old I was always confused and going back and forth about if he has autism or not because some of his autistic behaviors were very obvious, but what wasn't obvious was his sensory sensitivities and stimming. His aren't the "typical" ones you hear about. All I'd heard about were hand flapping or other repetitive hand movements, or making constant humming or groaning noises. Watching your videos I've realized that stimming can be so many more things than what you typically hear about or your child's pediatrician asks about, and that my son does stim quite often. I'm also thankful that I found your videos on ABA therapy. I knew that autistic children often do "therapy", but I didn't know the specifics. I looked it up and was horrified! As someone who experienced abuse as a child the adversives and the compliance training were especially horrifying to me. I'm so upset that I hadn't found videos made by adults with autism before now, but I guess it's never too late.

I just have autism and I'm different compared to my friends and colleagues. I was diagnosed with avoidant personality disorder, adhd, add, borderline personality disorder, anxiety and depression earlier. However, I was always lacking a few main symptoms. Finally I can see where is the problem and why I had burn outs, melt downs, shutdowns, procrastinations, and other things. I really don't know how to say thank you. In my country movie theaters always have an intermission halfway through the movie. The movie theaters do it because they can screen more ads and because many people use the break to buy more snacks they sell more stuff, so it helps them make money, but it's really nice in my opinion to have a break halfway through the movie to go to the bathroom, get more snacks/drinks, chat with friends, take a break from focusing etc. It's helpful for my ADHD because my brain can take a break rather than having to focus on the same thing for 2-3 hours straight. Even with the intermission I haven't seen Endgame yet because I'm waiting for a good focus/mental energy day. I'm physically abled but my ADHD and mental illness means I can't just go see Endgame any day in the cinema because I need to be in the right headspace to be able to focus.

A local autism organisation arrange screenings for members where it is ok to comment the film or leave when needed. Getting multiple breaks laid in should be possible to negotiate too. For my 50 year birthday I rented a small cinema to show The Lego movie as there was a lot of children in the family and I wanted to show friends and colleagues the state of the art in animation :-) Then we went to a nearby pizzeria for a buffet as I didn't have the energy to arrange something more formal. My point is that renting a cinema for a private screening might be cheaper than one normally would think. Banding together with 15-20 peers could result in about the same ticket price and be cozy. Another option might be to ask the theater for permission to come and view for an hour on three consecutive days. If you sit near the exit it should be no problem for them and you would get exactly the same as the other patrons.

From my experience at least, a big factor in reducing how much recovery time I need isn't just how much time I spend with people and what I'm doing, but who I'm spending that time with. My advice for my fellow autistic people on this front--when you're craving social interaction, try to hang out with lawyers. I've dipped my toes in a lot of ponds on this front, and they are by far the least exhausting crowd I've met. They're so specific about every little detail that I don't have to spend half my mental capacity analyzing what they say and do for implied communication, I can just go with what they just told me and safely assume that's the only thing that's relevant. (As a side benefit, the vast majority of them are "closet nerds" as well.)

Strangely, I never really considered the fact that Endgame's run time (and any movie even slightly similar in length) could be ableist, despite having a condition that completely prevents me from being able to see the film. I guess because I developed this condition somewhat recently, many of the things I'm not able to do anymore get processed more as personal limitations rather than just general inaccessibility. I think I need to start coming to terms with the idea that I am disabled, albeit in a very non-conventional way. That's not to say or assume that every limitation of mine, or other people, is a direct fault of society or outside forces. But there are a lot of things that are just genuinely inaccessible for no real reason or function. And the more of life I experience limited in the way that I am, the more I realize it. Thank you for helping broaden my perspective with this video.

Definitely relate. When family come for a visit for a few hours, I'm done for a day. If I go to lie down after they leave, I can hear the noises over and over in my head for at least 3 hours, and I can't sleep. Having to go visit them in the city is always a nightmare for me. I used to get severe stomach upset when we went. And I'd have what I didn't know then, was meltdowns on the way back after the weekend. Partly thanks to your work here on youtube, and my autistic kiddo, I have been able to understand some of my traits and am now able to self-regulate better. I don't know if I am on the spectrum, but there definitely are traits. And I'm thankful for it, because it helps me understand my non-verbal ASD kiddo more than I would have otherwise. :) PS. They used to do intermissions. I wish they still did. They could probably attract a lot of extra customers if they had intermissions in some of their shows (not all of them, because some people don't like the interruption). I envy people who can buy one of those huge drinks and then watch a 3 hour movie without missing anything. I've never tried this, but I hear that if you didn't like the movie, the theater will give you your money back -- unless you watched the whole thing. If that's true, you could see the movie in 2 trips without having to pay for tickets both times. It might be hard finding good seats on that second trip, but I've found theaters to be mostly empty in the morning. Some theaters have nice seats now. I found one of them by accident. Every seat is a recliner there. I don't know if the big screen is worth all that to you, but I thought I'd suggest it just in case.

She finds it very difficult and damn near impossible to get through a solid week of school without being completely exhausted (mentally and emotionally more-so than physically - though the mental and emotional exhaustion itself take a toll on her body). We’ve incorporated mental health days/recover days into her schedule but it isn’t always enough. My concern is her missing too much school. Fortunately she doesn’t struggle academically (Grade 9), but sometimes I feel like the more time she misses the harder it is for her to learn coping strategies and build resiliency. I want to support her with what she needs but I also don’t want to limit her and sometimes feel like I may not challenge her enough. What would your advice be to a parent of an autistic teen struggling with public school?

Hi Amethyst, I’ve been watching your amazing channel, I love your videos and your positive energetic approach. Thank you! I would like to ask you for book recommendations about autism, specifically high functioning or Aspergers. Do you have a list of favourites to help a neurotypical person such as myself understand and learn more about an autistic friend? Thank you! You’re amazing!

I wanted to comment on how good your 'Ask an Autistic #15...' video is but comments were disabled there. A lot of things described there put words into things I find myself needing too even though I was initially looking into your videos for help about my autistic son. (Things such as needing 'unstructured downtime'.) I see a lot of similarities between my son and I. He has been officially diagnosed with autism, but I haven't been and have never been tested for it. Thank you!

Your videos are awesome! I am a self diagnosed level one autistic person at the age of 20. I also have a congenital visual impairment that scientist and research studies have linked to higher chance of also being born with autism. I was wondering if autism can affect the gross and fine motor skills and balance such as walking or going up and downstairs because I have issues with these things too and a lot of my visually impaired friends really don’t seem to have these issues. Along with everything else that makes me feel I have level one autism that none of my visually impaired friends go through.

I have a very special Autistic friend .. she went back to her country after staying with me for ,18 months .. I miss her and send music poems pictures photos songs and many other words to encourage .. I get frustrated when she fails to respond esp after Several days .. Watching you reminds me of the very many challenges in getting through each day... And to be patient remembering she is Autistic.. I do get frustrated as gaming takes a lot of her time and constantly flicking through games discord on phone and game videos .. Thanks for reminding me that I need patience and kindness ❤ any advice would be appreciated ..

I just learned more about my two young adult children in eight minutes than I have across their entire lifetimes from anyone else. Have you done a blog or video about parents being blamed for their children's, what they view, as laziness? I wonder how many parents put pressure on their kids (mine are 22 and 26 so I use the term loosely) because of pressure put on them from society. My two definitely require a lot of down time and I am constantly being blamed for "allowing" them to be lazy and just sleep or be alone in their rooms. It's wrong so it's got to be somebody's fault--mine!

Omfg! I'm 35 and diagnosed with ME/CFS. I got sick 3 years ago and just now I've started to relize I'm probably autistic?! So I checked out your channel and now you're talking about CFS? I mean, I could endure life, social interaction, partys and so on... but I always felt it did cost me way more egergy than normal people. Now I'm severly handikapped due to the lack of enegy. I have to peactice pacing all the time and my energy to rest ratio is similar to yours. That means I can no longer work. Could it be that I'm "just" autistic and masked my whole life until I got sick?

Thank you very much for your statement. My son and I both have autism spectrum disorder - formerly Asperger's Syndrome. Franio was interested in cars, dinosaurs. And now different countries. I, in turn, am interested in tea, yerba mate, herbs, history - I am an archival historian, as well as the countries of Far Asia and the Middle East. Finally, I wanted to tell you that in Poland, back in the 1990s, it was very bad when it comes to society's perception of various mental differences or diseases and disorders. To say that you go to a psychologist and God forbid to a psychiatrist was a powerful disservice. Poles as a people are changing. It's much better now. There are institutional and other problems. On the other hand, we have very good adaptive qualities as a nation. However, it kills, in my opinion, too much individuality. We want too much to be Americans, Englishmen being in those countries suddenly forgetting their own tradition or language. And we are different from others. Just like the rest of us. And I think that's beautiful.

Yay (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ I’ve recently found your channel and your awesome! I think your videos are amazing! April is my birthday and what happens is April is the month my parents start going to pubs with friends and I stay home becouse social events really tire me out! I also try and look normal at social events so ‘I don’t embarrass myself’ when that happens I head home and just play games or watch KZread or animate. I’ll also draw things to calm down at social events.

I'm sorry for not knowing, but what is difficult about April? My current girlfriend is autistic and I want to know what can be happening when she's upset. I try my best to understand her behaviors so I can recognize what she feels. I'm learning her boundaries and needs through research but also talking with her. And I never tell her what her boundaries are because they're not mine. Thank you Amethyst!

I actually had to look it up too, and I'm autistic myself. April is apparently "Autism Awareness Month", so my guess is that it normally involves a lot of ignorant people saying ignorant things, thinking they're helping while making things worse. I'm not particularly involved in any kinds of communities where it comes up and my friends and family only really talk about my autism when we're raging about the existence of anti-vaxxers, so that's probably why I didn't know either.

Hi there. I was wondering if you have a vlog that addresses relationships (significant other or spouse) as an autistic...? I have autistic loved ones, and would like to gain some insight. At least two of the adults on the spectrum in my family that I know have difficulty in relating to close family or significant other.

I know the last reactions are 3yo, but I am still going to try and ask about stimming (here 'cause I can't leave a reaction on the older videos about stimming).. What if you and your partner (or a family member you live with) are both on the spectrum and one of you stims in a way that is distressing for the other one?
