Active Response to Suffering | Brs. Phap Huu, Phap Linh, Sr. Dedication

Is Plum Village “engaged” enough today? Is our daily practice of mindfulness an appropriate answer to the problems our world is facing? If we look deeply at current issues such as war, injustice, or the climate crisis, we can understand their connection with our ways of thinking, speaking and acting.
Recorded on 2022 10 02 during our Rains Retreat
Panel:
00:00:00 Br. Pháp Hữu
- Buddhism is a living tradition that needs to be applied in our daily life.
- Thầy’s journey in renewing Buddhism in the midst of war, chaos, and suffering.
- Going as a river in the Sangha.
00:18:16 Br. Pháp Linh
- Can we recognize that what we are doing now (taking care of our emotions and - generating mindfulness) is an active response to the suffering that is going on in the world today?
00:27:33 Sr. Hiến Nghiêm
- The importance of deep listening and changing our way of life.
- The energy of mindfulness gives us the freedom to liberate ourselves from the systems that we are caught in as species.
00:38:49 Br. Pháp Hữu
- The importance of living simply.
- The spirit of service.
00:55:45 Br. Pháp Linh
- Practices that can help to deal with the divisions in the climate movement.
- Running away from suffering stops us from living simply.
- The importance of practices that help us to cut through our separate self and feel our connectedness.
01:08:54 Sr. Hiến Nghiêm
- The possibility of genuine human connection across differences.
- We have the responsibility to live our life deeply as a human being
01:14:53 Br. Pháp Linh
- Turning grief, pain, and despair into a fuel for our aspiration.
01:19:53 Br. Pháp Hữu
- Our day to day practice has an impact that we cannot see.
01:22:05
- Short teaching from Thầy on Applied Buddhism (teaching given on June 21, 2009)
In this panel, Br. Pháp Hữu, Br. Pháp Linh, and Sr. Hiến Nghiêm share their insights on Applied and Engaged Buddhism, drawing on our teacher’s life as a peace activist and a community builder.
Our teacher believed that deep understanding can only come about when we practice together as a Sangha, generating a powerful energy of mindfulness and concentration, giving rise to great insight. The power to help with compassion and resilience can be found within each one of us.

Thank you dear Siblings. This really was a wonderful talk. I immediately had several friends I wanted to share it with. It was lovely to meet you all in Plum Village this summer at the family retreat. I listen to at least five talks per week and this one was very deep for me. Why do you think that ? Life itself causes people suffer already ( illness , malnutrition , hungry , natural disasters like flood, earthquake , volcano eruption ect.. ) , the bad people make life more difficult and cause sufferings , especially the criminals , murderers , war mongers . Only in humankind , people kills together , in other animal species , no such thing happens .

Please, do not speak in terms of bad people. A more accurate description is people with (a lot of) suffering. We need these people for maturing in our practice. They give us opportunities to learn forgiveness, understanding and love. These beautiful actions can bring us a lot of happiness. I currently live with someone who deals with a lot of suffering. It is not easy, but it helps me to develop important things as patience, compassion and kindness. It gives me an extra and necessary reason to grow in my practice. My very best wishes for you!

None of these works when dealing with totalaterian dictator regime, within buddhist community these practices might work, but those who kill in name of their religon like Islamic Republic of Iran just see buddhists as non-beliver and easily kill anyone who is not thinking like them. Past 43 years lots of Iranian girls, and nameless buddhist and other regliong minorities got killed in Iran.

I have been a racist who threatened Women really bad. I was eating a lot of meat and had no problem with Animals getting killed for my meals. I was not close to a Buddhist temple or community. Now I am almost Vegan who take care of refugees. I am at peace because of Buddhism (Plumvillage Tradition) and I am creating peace for others. If I can change, anyone can do it. But we also have to understand that the World is impermanent and full of Suffering. The terrorists are in our hearts and if we change them, then we will change the world slowly. I wish you peace and happiness!
