When something falls on Earth with an acceleration of 9.8 m/s2 , then they are accelerating at 1 g. A person in freefall at 1 g would feel no external forces, but from the physics perspective we would say that he is experiencing an external force of gravity. This apparent contradiction is what might lead someone to refer to gravitational force as "fictitious" in the same way that "centrifugal" force is. The term "g force" refers to the sensation that you feel when you are being accelerated by an external mechanical force. If you accelerate at 9.8 m/s2 due to an external mechanical force, then you are said to be experiencing "one g". When you are standing on the ground, you are experiencing an external mechanical force from the ground, towards the bottom of your feet. If you were to close your eyes it would be impossible for you to tell whether you were standing on the ground, stationary, or in outer space, being accelerated by a rocket motor at 9.8 m/s2 ! In either case, you are experiencing 1 g. So to answer the original question: When you are in free fall, you are experiencing 0 g, because there is no mechanical force on your body.
