Hi. Good luck. Acrylic colors are not necessarily easier to paint with, just different. After all, they dry much faster. In my figurative paintings, I use many layers to achieve the soft transitions between light and shadow that oil is so good at. I think you will miss the possibilities that oil gives in portrait painting, but you will be gifted with other advantages with acrylic. Greetings from Denmark

Just let them laugh ... we say in Denmark that the one who laughs last laughs best ... I get a lot of questions about whether a picture is finished. I say: it's done when it's sold. Then it's no longer mine, and whoever owns it now hopefully thinks it's finished...let's not hope he/she continues to paint on it. Ha, ha... Happy New Year to all three of you

After one year of learning to draw with graphite, charcoal, and colored pencils I am taking the plunge into acrylic painting. I have spent a few weeks watching "how to acrylic" videos. Most of what I have viewed are stunning landscapes or highly detailed animal drawings which are beautiful. But I am also seeking how other artists paint with acrylics. Then I came across your videos! Your style is very fresh and modern to me. I love it. Thank you for the education. You have provided me with so much inspiration. I love the finished painting but I also love it at 21:39.

Hello and thank you very much for the nice words. It means a lot to me that what I do makes sense to others besides myself. Yes, there really are many very talented artists who demonstrate their skills on KZread. I have to admit that I see a lot of them and the possibilities are endless. The acrylic colors are especially good when, like me, you want a slightly faster workflow. They cannot immediately replace the oil colours, for example - in a figurative painting - when the light turns into shadow on a cheek to below the garden. When you have to perform a soft transition between light and shadow, it takes time to perform. You can, but it's a bit trickier. As for 21:39 ... well, I can see the sketchiness myself as a quality in a painting, but I have to see it "finished". It's something I'm working on, getting it a little more resolved, but it's difficult for me. Try to find my painting MARKBLOMSTER on my web page: SKORA.DK. Seak: "skora markblomster" on Google. I AGREE!!! I'd also add in the whimsical portrait with butterfly or flower, ect. Not saying it is bad work but it is super helpful and refreshing to see something different.

This was so helpful. Thank you. The little glass bowls and mini whisks are brilliant ideas. I'm guessing you must also be a creative cook. At the age of 80 and newly retired, I am determined to apply my remaining years to two things...time with my grandchildren and growing a regular painting practice. There is so much to learn, and you have already been a tremendous help. Over the years, I've spent time drawing and collaging and printmaking; but, full-on painting is new to me. Predictably, I want my current work to bring all those media together with acrylics. PS: I love Paine's Grey. It makes a wonderful deep grey-blue, especially when brushed into other blues. I paint in acrylic. Recently, I had some spare corrugated cardboard . So i used it to cover my work table..smooth side up. I discovered it was great to wipe my brush off or test if there was still colour on the brush. Also it's cheap. Thankyou for your explanation about colours dulling when you mix them. A useful thing to know!

I was hoping before you signed off that you would reveal the name you gave this painting. It is a beautiful painting of Poppies, my favorite Poppy painting. Just before my Mother died, she asked me to hurry up and do her income tax so I might use her income tax refund to buy my dog. I was shocked and very touched to learn that she actually was aware of my longing desire for a particular dog of my own, and wanted to give me the funds to make the purchase. I had taken care of my Mother for nine years before she died, as she was no longer able to care for herself. I named my black-colored, standard-sized, Golden Doodle puppy, Poppy. I hope at least there is a print still available for purchase of this exact painting. I love it.

Enjoyed watching this video thoroughly, Sir! I have always liked to understand - however little - what goes on in an artist's mind as they paint and your explanation helped a bit. I am sure there are many choices of shape and colour use that cannot be explained, but only experienced by the artist. Thank you for the tips. Thank you for your kind words. Yes, that's how it is. I like the slightly flickering effect in my paintings. I get the same experience when I see nature, but I paint that experience through my own temperament. The important thing for me is not to show nature itself, many others are doing that just fine, but rather the experience, and ultimately the painting is what is important to me, and to find what is needed to paint what in my view is a good painting that .

So appreciate your content. Helpful tips for acrylics, Thank you. Now retired, the tight realism from my past just isn’t enjoyable or even interesting to me. Can’t hold a steady brush either, so abstract has been the way to go. Playing with various Golden mediums these days for impasto styles.

@@skora-theoldguy thank you for the very thoughtful link. I’ve used a maul stick and an artists bridge in the past. I have essential tremors which have worsened with age (got me early retirement), so incorporating the very rhythmic tremors in my work is my new goal.

i only have a small set of golden ,i know many use these ,i have many acrylics and watercolors ,i have cheaper and more pricey ones ,i paint every day and have for most of my past 28 years ,i create for the joy of art ,thank you for this ,my new favorite is heavy body meeden they came in huge 1 liter tubs ,i love them but not sure how to use them, im used to thinner paints,very good colors.i am very happy with them ,my matte acrylics are not as pleasing to my eyes these new meedens have a sheen i love them

Hi It's great that you paint because you get pleasure from it. It is the most important. I prefer the best and unfortunately also the most expensive qualities because it's more fun for me. I don't know the brand: MEEDEN, but I will test it the next time I see it. By using different media in the acrylic, you can give it just the surface you want. Good luck with your process.

I love the way you simplify the explanation, and watching you paint is comforting. To be honest acrylic terrifies me, I feel intimidated that they dry fast, on canvas and on my brushes. In fact I wash my brushes several times while painting, because of fear there will be paint starting to dry up inside the brush hairs, which may damage the brush. It makes the experience rather stressful and rushed. Do you have advice?

There is a medium for acrylics manufactured by a number of companies but for example, Liquitex makes one called SLOW-DRI Additive. It takes longer to dry without diluting the colour. The way you describe your feelings towards it maybe you'd be better off painting with oils because this problem doesn't really exist. At least try it for yourself and then decide. Get the 3 primary colours and titanium white and see what you think.

Hi and thank you for your kind comment. I agree about the Retarder solution. Be carefull however not too much. I have really no problem with painting drying inside the brushes. I have a bucket of water and when I'm not using the brush I just leave it in the water. When I need to use it again, I rinse it in the water, pick it up, dry it on the towel as I show in the video, moisten it again and dry it ... and maybe one more time if it's very dirty. Then it's ready! When I finish painting for the day. I wash all the brushes in soap, and quite a bit of paint actually comes out. Finally, there is the fact that the brushes are quickly worn on the canvas when painting acrylic. Therefore, the problem never gets to be particularly bothersome to me. Change the brushes often. Good luck.

I have found ordinary, cheap hand sanitiser is very good for getting even rather hard acrylic out of brushes. Just stand brush in the sanitiser for 10 minutes or so then wash in warm soapy (dish soap works, I use Fairy liquid but I'm sure any would do) water. Repeat if needed. I have rescued some very far gone brushes with this. Hope that helps.

I wonder if you are ever tempted to produce two of the same subject: one stopping with initial visual of the subject before it becomes abstract (21:40 in this video) and one that is the finished abstract?

Hello Thank you for your comment. Yes, I often think about whether I paint "past" the motif. But if I try to stop earlier I spend a lot of time with irritation when I look at the picture and think about all the stuff I would like to change. So I have to follow my process until the end, and I think I can no longer add anything that will make the painting better. Painting two paintings will probably be a bit boring for me. But thanks for your thoughts...I'll take them into my next paintings. Regards Henrik

Hi Thank you for your kind comment. No I have no canvas that I prefer. In Denmark, there are many local producers of canvases, and I choose one I have worked with for many years. That way I can get canvases in the size I want and I can return them if I'm not satisfied with the quality. However, I always use canvases that are reinforced with woven nylon thread. They are very strong. I also look at the price, if it is incredibly cheap, it is probably because it is actually incredible and that the quality is not as good as promised.

I find it interesting that you wet your canvas before painting with acrylics, which I have never seen before. I have used acrylics in the past, and I used them on a dry canvas. I thought wetting the canvas beforehand was only used by watercolorist. I must try your technique for my acrylics.

Hi and thank you for your comment. I wet my canvas before I start to avoid the dry canvas to suck all the moisture out of the paint in my brush. It prevents me from drawing long brush strokes. It's a balance how wet you want the canvas. If it gets too wet, the paint will blur out and lose the shape you gave it. And if the canvas is vertical, it might start to run down the canvas, and this is often not what we want. Sometimes I just use my atomizer with water to moisten my canvas, but I need to put some moisture on the canvas. It's not that it's "wrong" to paint on dry canvas, not at all ... but it works better for me to moisture the canvas. On my first video ... : kzread.info/dash/bejne/hZ98lbqvaLXOnsY.html ... I use a very wet canvas and lay it down horizontally, but the blur out ends up becoming part of the expression in the painting. You need to be carefull, however, with water. Excuse me for correcting your pronunciation a little bit,, but your English is so very good and you are proud of that, I can tell. The word ‘stalks’? You pronounce it ‘STAL’ ks. It isn’t pronounced ‘stal’ at all, the word sounds like or is identical to, ‘storks’. The A in Stalks is pronounced as an O in ‘Orbit’. Stalks is pronounced as Storks. The word ‘stirring’? You pronounce it as a German would, with the I sounding as an e? Therefore the word ‘stirring’ is pronounced similar to ‘burring’ or ‘whirring’. Not ‘steering’ as a German might pronounce it. I have enjoyed my attempts learning to speak German, and thoroughly enjoyed my visits to Germany, I was always pleased when someone took the time to help me with my pronunciation, I hope you don’t mind me returning the favour. I try my best. But I am sure that I will never completely get rid of my Danish pronunciation. It will haunt me for many years ... and ... no, I am not really proud of my pronunciation, but I do my best to make it as good as I can. I hope you know that Danish and German are very different languages ... but thank you very much for taking the time to write to me and "return the favor".

I prefer good ventilation regardless of the medium. Ventilation is, however, more important when you paint with oil. I made a video about it: studio.kzread.infoN_6wTLOSqMw/edit Here I tell a little about that subject. But it is good to ventilate in general.

Thank you! I would love to get a set of those glass mixing bowls like you have there. I can't find them on Amazon. The ones they have all seem to have rims on them and nest to far into the other bowl. Are you able to tell me where to get the ones you have? I use acrylics and would love to try using these. : )

Hi Hello I bought a lot of glass bowls many years ago. ARC and FRANCE are written in the bottom of the bowl. I haven't seen them for a while in Denmark, but I have found some others there that are almost as good: Arcoroc Saladier rond 60 EMPILABLE. They are 6 cm in diameter and have a slight curvature at the bottom, but otherwise they are fine and can be used. I’ve watched this video 4 times already and have learned something new each time, but as always, I have further questions. How do you keep the brush from laying down a thin edge along the outside of the area you are working in? It’s so annoying. I don’t overly load my brush but maybe I’m still using too much? Also, I’d love to see a video about creating depth in a painting. I have some paintings in a similar style and the other day a friend saw it and said, “Cute!” Worst compliment I could have gotten.

I find thin paint prevent the edge you’re talking about. This is especially true when using a heavy body acrylic. I like a combination of acrylic air brush medium and water. (Mess with ratios to find what works best) Even easier is using Golden’s High Flow acrylics. Also, using a flat brush, pull your lines with the chisel edge vs laying brush flat prevents paint from “squeezing” out of line causing the thin edge along the outside.

Hi I think less paint in the brush can solve that problem. If you watch my video, I often use my thumb to smooth this edge. Otherwise, you can paint over a few times with the brush. But as @the1stime writes below, a thinner paint will solve the problem. Another thing is that this "edge" will collapse and become smaller when the paint dries. Acrylic paint does not hold its shape in the same way that oil does. Actually, my advice to you is to ignore the small edges. Leave them alone and just paint and then let the small edges be part of your expression. I did that at start, and then I cane round to it later. Depth in the paintings , good idea ... I'm working on more videos, so there will probably be a video about that in time. As for other people's comments, I myself try to filter it from what I can use constructively. "Cute" a perhaps said in lack of a better word and in an attempt to give you a compliment. Those who do not paint themselves may not know how to express themselves precisely about a painting. I always think that other people's opinions about my paintings are less important than my own. Still, sometimes you learn something really useful ... so take what you can use and forget the rest. Hello. I use a Danish produced canvas from Bogø Design in Århus Jutland. I don't think you can buy them outside of Denmark. I would recommend that you buy canvases from a local manufacturer ,so you can talk to them if there is something you don't like. If this is not possible, go to an art shop who deals in these things and buy the canvas in an art or professional quality. Avoid the very cheap canvases. Good luck.

You shouldn't mix your paints with a "wire whisk" you are incorporating air bubbles into the paint.

Hello I've actually thought that thought myself. At the beginning of my career, I used other things to mix my paint, e.g. small sticks, brushes, spatulas and spoons. In practice, it has turned out that the whisk works by far the best for me. It is probably connected to the fact that I use the small glass bowls. If I mix on a pallet, I use the spatula. I have no problems with air bubbles in the paint ... and I don't create foam by whiping the paint either. Thanks for a good comment. Greetings Henrik
