The way he says that makes me think at some point he was burned by the government or involved with law enforcement, maybe joined the army, some kind of situation where he saw the kind of evil a government with absolute power can commit. Maybe I'm clutching at straws but a hatred for authority like the kind he shows doesn't come from nowhere, that's a man with a vendetta.

Fr, he’s that character that gets introduced before we even see him on screen and when Gwen describes him we think of him as this guy who likes Gwen and is obviously trying to get her for himself, tearing apart the Miles x Gwen ship we all absolutely love, also Gwen absolutely loves him, which makes Miles and us a little concerned. But once we actually get to see him for OURSELVES he’s absolutely amazing, the things Gwen say aren’t disregarded though of course since Hobie tells Gwen she left her jumper at his place, so obviously the two are tight, but I don’t think Gwen likes Hobie romantically and Hobie doesn’t like Gwen that way either.

I love that he's witty and sarcastic as shit and kinda tries to paint himself as unbothered and uncaring abt anyone's opinions in spider society but is probably the most emotionally intelligent person in there. He kept trying to gently push miles to not side with miguel since the start but noticed miles is tired of ppl talking down to him so he backs down soon enough. Knows exactly what he needs to say in order to give miles the last push to rebel against miguel when the tension is high, knows to gently remind him to use his palms so that miles gets ready to escape but doesn't panic about it too much knowing there's at least one person on his side, all the while doing it in a way that makes it look as if he's just telling miles to calm down to the rest of the spiders so that they're caught off guard by the explosion and miles gets a head start. Then he quits so he doesn't have to chase miles. Never really said or did any grand gesture to let miles know he cares for him/is on his side but ended up being the biggest help to him He has the most loveable and admirable personality I've ever seen. The definition of "I wanna be him when I grow up". Even though I'm probably near his age anyway 💀

I kept hearing the line "'cause you're not ready for everybody else" and couldn't figure out what he meant by it for so long, but only watching it in isolation did it finally click. He's responding to "they just want what's best for me". He knows exactly what's about to happen, especially that basically everyone he knows will betray him here, and he says it so Miles can accept it (and be infuriated by it) earlier.

That's what I'm thinking. I genuinely don't think Hobie and Gwen are a thing. Because we already know Gwen and Miles like each other, and Hobie doesn't seem like he'd do something like that. He respects Miles and helps him escape the spider society. He even joins Gwen's team to help him. So why would he go through all this effort just to be like, "Oh yeah, I'm dating the girl you like haha". It just seems out of character for them. Hobie likes messing with people, so I believe he's just teasing Miles. I'm sure the third movie will clarify the dynamic between him and Gwen.

It's possible he's also doing it to get Gwen to talk to Miles cause he knows she hasn't told him nearly enough about everything. And like you said, he's spending all his time helping Miles, so why not help with his girlfriend too? Lol

Finally watched ATSV the other day, and at first I didn’t understand why everyone loved Hobie so much. Then the palm scene happened. I haven’t shouted “yes” that loud since I was 10. He was the only one who stood up to them and genuinely helped Miles, from the first moment they met. Cannot wait to see what happens in the third film!

Just calling it here, Hobie Brown was the original name for the Prowler, that with him giving straight up tips on Miles venom powers, i think Hobie is like miles and was also supposed to end up Prowler and became Spidey. Explains why he feels like hes only in it for Miles. Also if you watch him break the barrier in his first scene there's a bunch of electricity graphics, is it stylish? Yes, but also could suggest more.

Shooting to the stands here, Hobie is a Miles where in his universe the fight with his Mom and Dad goes so bad he moves to the UK, then maybe loses them while gone. If the forst movie shows us anything it's that there are 0 lines that are throwaway
