I’m about 8 months into Coral Keeping and usually have Fragbox Corals on as I’m working on my tank 🙂 It’s like I’m hanging out with March and the crew as I’m learning ❤️

Lower light but the nitrates and phosphates are better for the amount of light .The more light they get the more nutrients they need in the water that's why the acros under lower light color up better.

I agree I think you should look at the nutrients. They have made a big difference in my coloration

we have the exact same acropora in australia we call Dustins cousin. In higher light its more blue, in lower light more green. Parkers reef has an amazing colony of this arcopora

Increase your blue light if it's not already up. Also, increase the fish in that system so you can feed. Feed that tank frozen, something like Rod's foods that feeds the fish and the Acros. I essence, more nutrients. Pale color is lack of nutrients. I also notice the more colorful Acropora you have at Fragbox are under G4s. The pale is under G6s. It isn't the lights, it's the spread. Lower those G6 fixtures as you're not getting the same amount of light with the G6 that high up. The G4 has much better penetration because of the lens.

I have started into corals about 4-6 months ago, I’ve kept saltwater shrimp for years beforehand. What I’ve noticed about the one smooth skin “deep sea” acro, I have super strong flow and also grow all my corals in direct sunlight is that they are super temperature depended- as in they are temp sensitive to 2 degrees off a normal measurement if they look happy or not. I also use natural seawater changing about 20-30% a week

I would say light spectrum and par plays a huge part in the colour of acros. Unless you have a spectrometer, it's a bit hard to say it's the "same" spectrum. Flow would be more growth structure. G4 radions are tried and true.

I've heard from WWC and videos when they interview others. High light usually better for growth. Low light better for color.

What works for me is higher No3/4 with higher light - AI64HD’s phos .14/.2 , nitrate 22.5/25 . Broadcast feed my tank once a week & feed the fish well with a mixture of feed / hakori algae , Nori sheet & pellets

March my secrete is good flow and proper spectrum… 14500k on those G6s is a great blend for colour. Par with LEDs is kind of overrated ! My par levels are 150 - 250 from bottom to top on a reefer 425 G2. I’ve got great colour and growth. And as everyone already knows ….. stability is key ! Your friends from London !

I just want to highlight the concept of confirmation bias for those watching to improve your reefing critical thinking skills. Here you have one coral that is acting opposite of your years of understanding (acropora need high light for good coloration). Your brain develops a hypothesis (perhaps acropora look better under lower light) and then goes looking for supporting evidence (ie. The Route 66 farm with less lights). To your brain, this is “validating” your hypothesis. Many would consider making an adjustment to their lights at this point. The only problem is there’s a whole tray of other corals to look at, not to mention a ton of other variables between Route 66 and Fragbox. The lights may or may not have anything to do with it. Our brains ignore the rest doing us (and potentially our tanks) a huge disservice. Perhaps March is on to something, perhaps not. But by being intentional about looking for the information your brain is ignoring, you’ll be much better off in your reefing decision making. March is in a good position to test the theory with multiple tanks, but often I think hobbyists try to make adjustments on the fly after seeing videos like this and it makes their reefing lives much harder. Just food for thought! P.S. thanks for testing the theory out!

Bump your nitrate and phosphate. Same tank water but you have one with lights to high for your nutrients. I dont know if its possible bc its all plumbed together.

The issue is lighting. Crank the PAR even higher to pull out the purple/blue. The green should be secondary, so to me I think even your SPS tank is on the low side at 300 par. Miagi coloured up is a mostly blue/purple acro.

I have noticed the same thing and for whatever reason, torts/austera like the miyagi and yellow tips look better in my frag tank in low light and looked like poo in high light. I think they like lower flow and lower light. I moved my poopy yellow tip down and into low flow and it colored up and grew well. In high flow it got all knobby and weird growth patterns. So I think torts do better in lower LED light.

Reflection of light all the way around a single frag versus shadows, caused by multiple branches within a colony

I find Acro color up with higher par(4-500 under my Radion G6) high flow and nitrates in 10-15 range. I also found better colors after using Moonshine elements.

Gen 4s are the superior light. Very well know in the sps world lol so not blasphemy lol. General rule of thumb with acros - higher par faster growth, more color = less par. Like the homewrecker people have trouble getting the pinks but at 250par usually is when all the colors come out. Weird but true. You doing great man. Keep it up!

What others have said, it’s a combination of light and nutrients. Higher light requires more nutrients.

They just have different coloration depending on the par sometimes the color is more desirable at lower par so higher par isn't always better depending on how you think the coral looks best

One of Miyiagi is much more purple blue with no green. While my other looks two different shades of dark green blue. Under same light and same water. So my opinion the depth and height and position of light.

The differences - g4 were a point source and the g6 diffused - ( g4 pro - my favourite-were far similar to halides ) - plus positioning in relation to the light - the frag sitting in just a few inches of water with less surface turbulence? and the hydrodynamics in the fragoon no doubt way stronger than the frag table compared . I’m guessing you’re feeding all the frag tanks but are there any differences in where you add food - less or more in each table ? These would be all the reasons why colouration ( notice I spelt it the right way 😂) of your tort looks the way it does . But g4pro high up for safety in a dealers/LFS table were way better out the box than the diffused hobbyist designed optimum (9”/14” off the surface g5/6 gen ) . Although try the new lenses from ecotech like I have for the g6 and you gain some of that g4 poke . All the best the baldy bastad from Essex x

Too much light on that acro. Edit: I suggested this before I heard the par on that tank. With the high power LEDs these days they can easily overdevelop their zooxanthelae. That tends to brown or at least darken. Just like a suntan. It looks like the smaller colony beside it has brighter color. I'm guessing that is because it's deeper in the water.
