🎸 ACOUSTIC FINGERSTYLE LEVEL 1 [Full 20 Lesson Course] Beginners
Welcome to our Acoustic Fingerstyle Level 1 course! We're very excited to be welcoming the incredible Thomas back to the world of YGA to help us film and put together this course. There is no better fingerstyle player and tutor to guide you through this incredible style of guitar playing.
Fingerstyle, as a technique, is extremely powerful. It has the ability to take all of the chords that you already use regularly, and turn them into something magical.
When you put the plectrum down and start using your fingers you open up a whole new world of sounds. You can play those same open chord shapes that you've been playing since you started your guitar journey, but suddenly you can pick out individual notes, access specific melodies within the chords, and create entirely fresh, new compositions. It really is exciting to see it come together, and in this course, we take you from the ground up, as a beginner to the technique.

    Been a (bad) electric guitar player for more than 10 years, just learned a few songs and riffs I like. God am I bad on a acoustic guitar, it's ten times harder and the string hurts. I begin here and now. Hope I'll manage to stay focused, it feels like learning from scratch. Thank you for making all this free. Highly appreciated ! So far, I'm having a harder time on my left hand than my right hand. Surprisingly, the finger movements of the right hand seem natural to me.

    Thank you for sharing these lessons with us for free. It is very important to climb the stairs patiently, one by one. No one should rush to play the guitar well. If the foundation of a building is solid, that building is a good and durable building.

    For anyone struggling to transition from D-major to D-minor: An easy way to get started is to leave the ring finger string B-3rd fret, leave the middle finger string G-2nd fret and slide your pointer up and down from high string E-1st&2nd frets which changes the chord from minor->major respectively. When your pointer is on string E-1st fret, you are correctly fretting a D-minor. When you slide down to fret 2, it's not the correct way to fret a D-major but it's easier to transition as you're only moving one finger and not two. If you wish to fret both chords "correctly" and transition, think of your pointer and middle fingers as "dials" and you're turning the dial as you transition. Your ring finger never moves, but as you move your midde finger from string E-fret 2 to string G-fret 2, your pointer turns upwards as it lands on string E-fret 1.

    Thank you so much for this!!! This is exactly what I need! I bought my first guitar last year. I learned the 7 basic open chords and to play a few easy songs like Wild Things, Zombie and Ed Sheeran’s Perfect and a few others. After that I struggled trying to learn the F chord, the B and Bm chord, power chords or to do the spider walk exercise. I could not find what I should do next. After three weeks with seemingly no progress I quit…. I picked up my guitar again last week and started doing the spider walks exercises again. I finally did my first successful one last night and I screamed out of joy. Then today your video pops up in my feed. Perfect! A clear path forward again!

    I think this is a little too beginner for me, but to anyone who doesn't like doing the D minor, it's really good for fingerstyle of any type. Over time you'll see you can make some really good sounds if you incorporate other notes around it, and it's also just a beautiful chord.

  • @yga

    @yga

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Christopher, good work its always worth broadening your horizons! It's an okay habit to have and not the end of the world if you do it but generally we'd advise to not anchor you little finger and get used to hovering above the strings as will help keep your hand more relaxed and increase your mobility picking. It might feel weird at first but is definitely more comfy in the long run :) Hope this helps, Cam

    'at's us nai! :) Great lesson, Thomas - although I've already got these basic skills down fairly well I'll definitely keep watching the series as there's bound to be loads I'm not so sure on later in the course and, anyway, going over the simple stuff again never did anyone any harm. One thing I did notice, though, is that you didn't mention the option of planting the pinky down on the guitar body/pickguard to help keep the hand in a constant position with the right fingers next to the right strings. Was that a conscious decision - i.e. not something you necessarily recommend doing right from the outset?

  • @yga

    @yga

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Cathal! Great stuff, the difficulty definitely ramps up with each unit in this course so be sure to stay tuned for those :) With the planting of the little finger, I'd recommend against planting your pinky down as you're taking away a finger you might need to pick a string and can also add a bit of unwanted tension in the hand but it's not the end of the world if it feels comfortable to you, and you're not running into any issues then its no worries! :) hope this helps, Cam

    it definitely comes with practice, but you shouldn't need *that* much force to get the note to ring out. Often with the D chord the problem is your 3rd finger is touching the high E string and stopping it ringing out - I'd definitely check that!

    I’m strange, i think, been learning guitar for a year now and found it easier for me, to finger pick rather than using a pick on individual strings and easier than strumming too??? May i ask though, I’ve always used my pinky to support my picking hand on the G body.. is this a no no? i struggle when my hand is floating in thin air… Am i missing something here? Truly great quality lessons thanks for these.. NOODLES

    Hey Noodles! Good question. You can definitely argue that resting your pinky like that is extra effort and can cause tension in your hand, but if you feel like it's comfortable and isn't causing you to tense up then it's not a huge problem. One of my all time favourite players John Petrucci anchors his pinky when he's picking (with a plectrum) and he's one of the very best players in the world!

    You don't rest your picking hand on the guitar?

    It's on of those things that comes down to personal preference, some people say its better not too as less tension and more freedom of movement but really whichever feels best for you:)

    I learned a song but i think its best if i take my time to learn the basics, but its def hard to be patience when u feel like u know how to do it

    I feel you, it's so tempting to skip the basics when you're eager to play a specific song. But taking your time will make you a better musician in the long run, so hang in there!

    I would recommend as much as is comfortable for you here! Usually 20-30 minutes a day if you can, but don’t burn yourself out too much!

    I'm confused about how your 4-string fingerstyle chord patterns are compatible in the same song with the 5-string and 6-string chord patterns. Your 4-string chord patterns include six individual string picks, the 5-string chord patterns include 8 individual string picks, and the 6-string chord patterns include 10 individual string picks. Those numbers of picks aren't even multiples of each other. How are they compatible in the same song, as the chords change.

    Hmm, I'm not sure I want to continue. You say tabs and backing track are free on the website, but all that's there is a pay site. Starting off with a lie is not a good way to build customers.

    If you are okay with having the nails its not a necessity but some people prefer it for finger picking. :)
