I have been watching, and rewatching, and rewat....,( well you get the idea) and have always loved it; Victoria Wood, Celia Imrie, Julie Walters, Duncan Preston - whats not to love? But I just watched a documentary about "Crossroads" and its star Noel Gordon, and, now that I have more context, I enjoy "Acorn Antiques" even more than before!

There was a similar joke in an episode of "golden girls".. One of Dorothy's collage friends visits, Fast forward toward the end, Dorothy's friend confides she's developed feelings for rose.. Later Sophia and Dorothy giggle-ishly discus the revelation, blanche, over hearing the commotion walks in and asks what they're talking about.. Dorothy tells blanche her friend is a lesbian to which she replies "so?," " I've never met any personally.. But isn't Danny Thomas one?" dorothy looks at her puzzled for a moment then quips "lesbian blanche !" "not Lebanese!".

I was in a funk this morning until I came across this! I just adore Victoria Wood and her supreme wit. And all those other fantastic character actors, especially Julie Walters. It’s also interesting to see that the early 90’s was the dawn of the politically correct era and Victoria captured it beautifully. This is when western culture started to change from perhaps too insensitive to overly so. RIP Victoria, another wonderful human being gone too soon.

She isn't . She's satirising the far right mentality that promotes the view that Asians shouldn't be seen on TV or have programming made that acknowledges elements of Asian culture . The same with users of wheelchairs. In the early episodes it's clear she wrote the continuity announcer as someone with very conservative views such as "all these strikers should be grateful for having a job " during the miners' strike and "treating that all too familiar female ailment ....that's not a word I care to read out I don't think , fortunately it's not something I'm ever likely to get ...and if I did get it I certainly wouldn't put yoghurt on it " . Along with, at closedown, "our local radio station is still broadcasting , and there's still chance to catch some of that very popular nightly phone-in, so, if you want to tune in to listen to a bunch of ill-informed left-wing megalomaniacs, that's 373 VHF or 951 metres medium Wave , good night ."
