Achieve Your Dreams through Visualization | Pete Canalichio | TEDxGeorgiaStateU

Have you ever had a dream so big that you were not sure how you would accomplish it? Pete shares how the power of visualization and a willingness to put in an extra ten percent can move you towards accomplishing your goals.
Before starting his business career, Pete attended the U.S. Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science in physics. Pete served in the Navy as an aviator honing his leadership and decision-making skills as commander of a large multi-engine aircraft and 12-member crew during the height of Cold War tensions. Clear-headed and decisive under those extraordinary circumstances, he has applied that same leadership style to every challenge and opportunity he has faced in a distinguished career with such firms as Coca-Cola, Newell Rubbermaid and most recently, Licensing Brands, a business that he founded in 2009. Before transitioning to marketing, Pete earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School where he was a Richard H. Jenrette fellow and salutatorian. Pete has operated in the global arena, having worked in more than 40 countries and managed extensive projects across national and continental borders.

Ed, it may take some time to create a video on my technique so in the meantime let me share the following: 1. I methodically choose those goals that I wish to accomplish. 2. I then picture a point where accomplishing he goal would be achieved and visualize that action. 3. I then go about making it happen. Let me give you an example. I decided 8 years ago I wanted to write a book explaining how brands expand (into new categories), grow by the expansion and then ultimately thrive. I chose that book concept because I was perplexed that so many people didn’t know about my industry, the Brand Licensing industry (the one where companies rent brands to make products that people want to buy. Think Mickey Mouse tee shirts). So I pictured in my mind the act of personally signing my book and giving it to a person who just purchased it. I could see myself at a table with the book being handed to me. I would be engaging with the new book owner. I then opened the book to the title page, wrote a short note and then signed my name. With a smile I handed the book back to the new owner. It was this image that drove me to go to a book writing conference (twice), write the book proposal, find an agent, write the book and then find a publisher. Whenever I felt disheartened or deflated, I pictured myself signing my book. The image kept me focused and motivated. It got me through an especially difficult time when life was getting in the way of my goal and I was losing faith it could be accomplished. I am proud to share that my book, Expand, Grow, Thrive was published in Feb 2018. It was a major accomplishment for me and even won a Book Excellence Award in Marketing. The coolest thing for me, however, is the feeling of elation I get whenever I sign my book and hand it to the new owner. I hope this illustration helps you use my technique successfully. Either way, you will be better off for your effort! Pete

Thank you Pete for your message that supports the Visualization technique. One of my Sports athlete heroes is the late Jim Thorpe, a Native American who was awarded Gold medals for winning the Pentathlon and Decathlon events at the 1912 Olympics in Sweden. On the ship to Europe, his teammates observed that he was sitting around in a dream like state on the deck. When asked what he was doing, he said that he was imagining being on the award podium and creating mental pictures on going through the physical motions of his events. Nowadays that is common practice for many accomplished athletes. A video of the technique would be nice.

Never let go of your dream. Imagine yourself in the cockpit flying. Then think about what you need to do to get there. This could include taking flight lessons, saving money for them, joining the military like I did (I am a Navy pilot), etc. Once you have those thoughts start acting on them. You will be one step closer to making your dream a reality. Good luck!

~ Johan Wolfgang von Goethe ~ Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans. That the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.

Laura, Let me share the following which might provide more insight: 1. Pete
