    which fingers did you used for the scales? because my teacher taught me 123-1234-1234 for these kind of things but I saw you using 5.

    Played a recital where I performed Waldstein, Chopin G minor Ballade, and a Kabelevsky Sonata. Had 9 month to learn it all. Would not have been possible without a practice journal, period.

    Great video as always. Just wanted to add that working out in a sensible controlled manner can actually help prevent forearm and finger injuries resulting from piano playing. I had problems for a long time that were not resolved until I started working my forearms at the gym.

    I do a seniors strengthening class each weak involving weights. I really enjoy it & have just bought some weights to use at home - we're talking 1kg, 1.5kg!!! 😉

    Happy New Year everyone! My this year's goal is to lose 10 kilos in weight and hopefully learn the rest of Chopin's Winter Wind etude. It won't be easy, especially since how bad my technique still is. But that's why it's a goal. It's also a challenge. I'm going to work on my scale work (still undecided what to go for the F major fingering) and just generally trying to find ways to play more loosely without losing accuracy.

    I used to have have a lot of trouble with my Wrists and fingers after moves like lat pulldowns and dips.used to put immense strain on my Wrists and my fingers were so weak after I coupdnt play anything beyond a slow piece.had to stop going to the gym completely a week before a concert to let my hands recover

    I’ll trade you workout plan and diet tips for piano lessons! Ha. No but seriously. For pull ups, I recommend doing deadlifts once a week to help with grip and lower back strength. Also, you can get away with doing pull ups/full body workouts every other day. Start with pull-ups as your first exercise. Make sure you retract your scapula, stick your chest out and don’t swing any legs. If traditional wide grip pull ups are too hard, start with a neutral grip. Don’t do any assisted pull ups, they’re a waste of time. After 3 sets of fresh pull up, do a wide grip lat pull down to help mimic a pull-up. You’ll find grip strength a non issue if you do deadlifts regularly. Good luck!

    I keep a daily practice journal. I have planned some pieces for this year and listed them as two lists, popular/jazz/traditional & classical. Decided to focus on songs & pieces I know for more enjoyment & faster progress. I was getting very disheartened. My challenge piece for next 2 months is Bach Arioso 156. Working on fingering currently.

    Just recovered from a tendinitis on my right hand.The piece I would want to learn the most would be scriabin etude op8 n12 but that woudnt be a wise decision.

    I’ve been looking over your channel and I saw the videos called “Tips and Strategies.” If you do a series of these, this year could you please do one on the Grosses Konzertsolo by Franz Liszt? I’ve played it in concert five years ago and I’m planning to do it again next May because I love it so much. I would like some advice on how to become consistently perfect on measures 60-71 instead of hit or miss and play measures 235-251 and 283-319 at a moderately fast tempo.

    Thanks so much Myles. My top tip is find the best teacher you can - my teachers are a HUGE reason for my success. So far as videos and courses I’ve made, check out my KZread playlist “Videos Josh Considers Most Valuable” for some of my favorite techniques to improve faster. From my paid courses, you could check out the ProPractice Technique Series, which will help a lot with setting up a solid technical foundation (I’ve recently added 6 new videos to the course called “Pro Tips” with even more practice suggestions).     Do you have a preferred practice journal that you like to write down your practice planning? The ones I've seen are all geared towards beginner students. I've been using a daily planner, but it would be great to have something a little more tailored to piano practice

    Hi Josh! I’ve started watching your videos lately and I’m really enjoying them. I played piano when I was younger and quit for three years, and I’m starting back up again. Over the course of about two months I’ve gotten back to where I was before I quit, maybe a bit better. One question I have is should i practice a piece that is very difficult for me (I’ve sort of tried Un Sospiro and really love the song) or should I play things that are more my level to improve?     Thanks for your kindness and support Grady! I like to stack things in terms of difficulty. For example, I like to work on something I can learn and get to a good level within a month, another piece that I can get to a good level in 3 months, and another one that may 6-12 months (although I honestly think 6 months is a good cutoff...I don’t ever suggest someone learns something that takes them longer than a year, unless it is a big SET of pieces, because I’ve seen so many students lose all of their momentum when they take on projects that are so difficult that they cannot accomplish them within a year). I’ve been thinking of making a video on this. Thanks for reminding me!

    Thanks for the great motivational speech! I'm planning on a concert in May of the Grosses Konzertsolo by Franz Liszt and the Lyric Pieces Op. 43 by Edvard Grieg. Grieg once said that other composers like Bach and Beethoven "erected temples on the heights' but he merely wished to build cottages that a man might feel happy and at home in. So I picked these pieces to illustrate that concept to the audience. Have you ever played those?

    HI Volen - yes, I'm currently preparing Liszt's "Un Sospiro" (a piece I've taught a bunch of times, but never learned) for a concert next Saturday. I just started it a week ago, so it's been a quick process. For other repertoire, I may tackle Liszt's "Mazeppa" which will obviously be a longer term project, along with my other concert repertoire for the year. I hope you're well my friend!

    @@greenapple306 It all depends on one's abilities and technique, you should try yourself to know which one suits your hands more. Transcendental etudes are just hard to rank easiest to hardest (except for Feux Follets and Paysage lol) I personally find chasse neige to be more difficult

    Yikes I have three weeks to learn for a competition the third movement of Beethoven’s Appassionata, Chopins etude 10 no 4, à Gershwin, a Bach, and Ravels Jeux D’eau. I planned out my practices but I’m not feeling too confident lol. Also have you dealt with piano related injuries? Apparently I’ve torn some bicep muscles because of piano

    I’m curious if you find weights effect your forearms - particularly doing pulling exercises like pull-ups or rowing? And does it effect your playing?

    Awesome! I'm sure you'll do great. Try eyes closed practice, and also try dividing the rolls into two-note segments. This will help you master each segment of the roll individually. I wish you all the best for a great year of study!

    To be honest, when you first do it, it’s extremely intimidating. My teacher asked me to start coaching (her VERY talented) students when I was 16 years old. I hadn’t played most of the pieces I was helping her students with. However, you start to learn the styles of different composers as you listen, learn, and teach their works, and that translates into other pieces by the same composer as well. You even see this with the highest levels of teachers and the most difficult repertoire. For example, I played the Barber Sonata for Sergei Babayan, and even though he never learned it, the lesson was still so inspirational and informative.

    Doesn't doing pullups put a lot of tension in your fingers as well? I found my fingers unable to move very quickly on keys after a week of pullups

    Kishaloy z i think there’s a difference between tension and chance of injury. I do things like weighted pull ups, benching in the mid 200s, rack pulls in the 500s and as long as you have good form, your chances of injury are reduced. Working out actually builds my forearm, and wrist strength which carries over to piano

    Kyle Ledesma I agree. I used to have knee pain quite often, and even in the last month and half, even with heavier weights than I’ve ever lifted in the past, the knee pain has actually gone away as I’ve improved my form and built the muscles around the knee which alleviates the strain. @Kishaloy - with the gloves I haven’t had any sort of finger/hand pain at all

    I'll try with gloves and see. Other workout exercises are fine. It's only the pullups that I found to be inhibiting. Maybe it'll be a different story if I have gloves on.
