I think the story about dinosaurs at the end meshes nicely with the discussion of human machines that burn dinosaur squeezings.

From what i remember, operating temps for DLC is around 500 celsius.

It’s not about making the piston strong as Diamond. It’s about decreasing the coefficient of friction and reducing thermal expansion. However, the piston rings are the only part of the piston in contact with the cylinder bore. So if you’re actually going to reduce friction you want the DLC coating on the piston rings. Coating the rings, rod and crank journals with DLC will absolutely reduce friction and parasitic power loss. However, coating the pistons will do nothing to reduce friction.

The rings are constantly moving and expanding/shrinking I don't see any long-term results, people are nuts to trust a coating like that

The coating should at least make an aluminum piston stronger, i'd hope.

Coating the piston will absolutely reduce friction as seen in the video lol Also under the piston where the wrist pin is subject to galling which is why they also coat the wrost pin itself. Coating the part of the piston that the rings sit in also reduces wear. So coating the pistons has a massive effect

How much does it cost to custom DLC coat aluminum parts? Is this pure graphite/carbon?

I guess theres company commercializing making it more cheaper maybe you can try flaking though this is only seen on machine ways it creates small pockets for oil to retain and also decreases the area contacted thus reducing friction thiugh i have yet to see people flaking engine oarts to make it glide smoother .I hope i can try this on a small engine to prove flaking can be done on engine sliding parts.

The deposition equipment is not cheap at all but I am pretty sure you can order the coating from companies that do this in big amounts for reasonable price. For example in my country (Czech republic) you can order DLC coating for knives for 13 to 26 dolars. I don't know what type of DLC it is, but I think you can get the idea of the price. For these automotive uses, the coating should be more resistant to higher temperatures which can be done by doping the DLC with tungsten for instance, but these are also pretty common in industry.

Rather than shot pinning. Because aluminum has pores, I'm surprised he didn't try anodizing aluminum in some type of metallic solution. When Aluminum is hit with a current, the pores open and soak up the die. That's where the colors come from on Anodized aluminum
