The RL lore of Tomb of Horrors is also interesting. The original S1 module was written by Gary Gygax in response to a party of characters who felt that nothing could challenge them any more. It did its job all too well and provided a template on providing much-needed challenges for high level adventurers.

DM: "You enter and you disappear." PLAYER: "Where did I go?" DM: "You didn't 'GO, you disappeared." PLAYER: "Wait... Wha... What do you mean I disappeared." DM: "You vanished, gone, poof, you DISAPPEARED." The bloody and savage fight which ensued still echoes down the hallways of Dungeon Master lore and legend to this very day.

Even more interesting is the lich of the Tomb of Horrors wasn't originally named Acererak, but Ra-Hotep (having come from a 5-page manuscript idea by Alan Lucien sent to E. Gary Gygax, to be reorganized into its longer version). This makes sense as you see the Egyptian-themed motifs at various points in the artwork. It was just a tournament module for first Origins Convention in 1975 (only a year and a half after Dungeons & Dragons was first published, and 5 years after Dave Arneson started everything with his Blackmoor variation of the Braunstein game). Heck, the original Sphere of Annihilation was carried by Ra-Hotep as being attached to his sceptre! Imagine getting thwacked by that! Of course, the fact the International Federation of Wargamers' Castles & Crusades Domesday Map of The Great Kingdom & Environs being found sheds light on the fact the names of some nations and such don't match up with the later published World of Greyhawk, such as The Egg of Coot (being not a Blackmoor baddie but also the name of its domain) and the border of Perrunland and the Paynim Kingdoms.

I imagine each lich has to do something different to gain their phylactery. One lich might have to throw their newborn into a portal to the abyss while another may have to devour the heart of an ancient metallic dragon and so on.

Jorphdan, I love the way you can concentrate a whole lot of research into these small video-pills I can easily swallow. You're great! I must add, however, that I've found some errors in this particular video. First of all, you described Vecna as an Archlich in 1:21 whereas Vecna was never a good guy and the Archlich is a name used for the good liches. Second, You've claimed that Demiliches are more powerful versions of Liches - that was the cane only in 3.5e, where the Demilich was a template for the Lich, making it stronger. Since AD&D up to the 5e (3e excluded) Demiliches were the deteriorated, lesser forms of Liches. And that's all from me. Thank you, once again, for making these videos!

He is mentioned briefly in the newest Salvatore novel as giving the succubus malconthet her mirrior of soul trapping so that she would return the souls to feed him. Their have been a lot of crossovers to realmspace. Spelljammers can help explain how some of it occurred as well as portals through sigil or many various planes of existence possibly.

That term really screws up with the usual meaning of archlich. An archlich is a non evil type of lich who gained their undead state from other non heinous rituals, but for Acererak that seem to mean he’s a leader of a group of liches, kinda like what Larloch is. Why the downgrade though, demiliches are what all power hungry liches strive to be.

Something that sounds weird to me is that his Phylactary is supposedly in a demiplane. But from most things I read on D&D liches is that their Phylactary needs to be on their current plain of existence to remain linked to the Lich. Meaning if the Lich tries to send souls to the phylactary while on a different plain, or even died in a different realm, it won't make it back to the phylactary. Meaning technically Acererak would die a permanent death if you slay him in the Tomb of Annihilation, as he soul can't return to the phylactary. Would be nice if Acererak is not the exeption to the rule, and it would be possible for all Liches to have their link to the phylactary remaining intact regardless of the plain though.

  • @Mister-Thirteen
    @Mister-Thirteen6 жыл бұрын

I feel that the Archlich deserves a mention here. The reason becoming a Lich is an evil act is due to the fact that process and result are half-assed; resulting in the Necromancer in question having to sustain themselves on the souls of others and likely having evoked fiendish power to do so IE: Orcus. Archliches took their time and got it right mastering the interplay of radiant and necrotic energies needed to sustain their consciousness, tho some are given this state by a deity like the elven Archliches. These guys are extremely rare as only a handful of necromancers are skilled & powerful enough to attempt lichdom let alone actually doing it correctly.

Other than that, it would be cool to hear about all those wizards who managed to get iconic spells named after them, such as Larloch, Bigby, Mordekain, Argannazar, Tasha, etc. Maybe you could put all those into one ep, if the lore about them individually isn't exhaustive enough.

My favourite Forgotten Realms villain is Sysquemalyn. She was evil because she was _normal._ She was a Netherese archwizard, after all. Her later insanity is justified. I'm pretty sure she would kill me horribly or curse me eternally if we met. no matter what I think, but still, I can't help but empathise: being forgotten for years in The Nine Hells without even your birthday suit, well it must have been rough.

If you're going to do Tomb of Horrors, the REAL 1st edition version, then I recommend you either have your players roll fresh characters they don't care about, maybe two or three each, or run it without consequences or rewards, such that the characters who die in the tomb aren't really dead, but if anyone actually makes it out alive they don't get any treasure either. It can be just a nightmare interlude in a campaign, or use it to point them in a tangentially related direction, or as a warning to avoid villains of this magnitude unless and until they are ready, etc.

@@Jorphdan I think that there would be an overwhelmingly positive response because those characters are so beloved! Also, your Niche seems to be 5 to 10 minute videos. Don't try to water down such colorful characters into one 10 minute long video. Break them up into a series all their own much like you did the different planes. I think that would be your best bet, giving that it would give you ample time to cover their stories in their entirety and also allow you to brush up on the minutiae of such vivid characters. Just a thought! I enjoyed your video on jarlaxle and was hoping Drizzt would be named dropped as a hint for what was to come. Same Vecna, but Matt put his own spin and some Tal'Dorei flair on the character.

I do have one serious question. Demi means half so how does it mean a more powerful lich? No calling you out.... TSR maybe or wizards of the coast.

  • @Jorphdan

Apparently Demi Liches were more powerful in DnD 3.5, but in 5e they are weaker than regular Liches. Demi meant half maybe cause they were half way to god hood? Like Vecna. That's just a theory :)

I've been hesitant to do FR Characters, like Elminster etc. Because 1) they are so beloved and I'm not sure I could do a video justice 2) they are so well known I'm bound to miss something 3) it's extensive, there are tons of novels and I haven't read most of them Still not opposed to it, but I need to properly prepare for them or I think I would just make the fans upset :)

Somewhat... confused. You reference the 4th edition as your information on this work, but it's somewhat wrong. (WotC is pretty wrong about a lot of things TSR made, really, so not surprising.) The most information to be found about Acererak can be found in a 2nd Edition boxed set titled "Return to the Tomb of Horrors." Return is a grand adventure built around the original Tomb of Horrors (so much so they reprint the original Tomb of Horrors product and give it to you to run mid-way through the story). Anyways, Acererak's true workings and motivations are laid bare in that boxed set. Your players work their way through Skull City, the original tomb and forgotten city of Moil to the Fortress of Conclusion in the Negative Energy Plane to discover Acererak has been playing them all along. See, Ace has been working a plan to invest himself in the fabric of the Negative Energy Plane. In time he would _become_ the Negative Energy Plane and through that, _every single undead connected to it at once._ That's right, he wanted to _become the entire plane and every undead that needed it._ To do that, he needed a critical number of pure souls. Souls so strong that they were exemplary... Souls so powerful, that only they could persevere through his myriad of tricks and traps to reach him. Return picks up the story at the point where Ace needs only a few more, the players' will do! It's a good adventure that any good DM should own. Tomb of Annihilation, meh. I did not like it much. It demotes Acererak to the level of "guy who just does shit for giggles" and has no grand plans. It comes off as a module written for some B list villain and someone decided to punch it up by adding a known name to it. How do you go from "investing yourself into the planar fabric of reality" to "messing around making a death god hoping it kills some things (before 200 some FR gods intervenes, surely?)." Perhaps the most infuriating part of it is there's no mention of the time he spent dispersed all over the multiverse (at the end of Return) and the seeming demotion he's had to no being a plain old lich (with a body and everything). It almost makes me suspect some other lich heard of him and figured he'd steal the name.

This is as good an explanation for me as any. I was wondering why there was no mention of how Acererak was so near to godhood when defeated that he couldn't fully be destroyed and ended up as a vestige. "This isn't really the original Acererak" is probably the most logical way to mend that particular plot hole.

yeah you're right, not the case of the 5e Monster Manual. But I believe in 3e it was true that Demi-Liches were more powerful. I couldn't find a Demi-Lich in 3.5 Monster Manuals, but generally the philosophy is that they've ascended past their physical form and become more powerful. But the challenge rating system in 5e proves that to be incorrect. And here we are :) forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Demilich#5e

Probably because being a Lich itself is not such a good state of being. So half of a Lich should be better then a full on Lich, while half of a God is not as good as a True God.

Wait, so Acererak became what he was because of Vecna? No, that's mixing lore too much. They are supposed to be two completely disparate legends. Just because two beings are famous and beloved doesn't mean their paths are intertwined. Needs more imagination. Rejected.
