Acer Nitro 5 (2022) Review - Great Price, AMAZING Performance

Ғылым және технология

The Acer Nitro 5 has received a big time update for 2022 with new CPUs and GPUs. But what really sets the Acer Nitro 5 apart is its price and actual availability right now. The RTX 3050 Ti version can compete with much higher end laptops because of its GPU power and so does the RTX 3060, even though both have the Intel Alder Lake i5-12500H CPU. But there's a few catches when it comes to saving money on gaming laptops....

I just bought my 13yr old son the Nitro 5 3050 Ti for Christmas. I’m a single mom and he has an expensive medical condition, so it was really all I could afford. Hopefully this works better than the cheaper HP he has because the gaming is getting a little serious and I’m over the constant yelling at his current laptop 😂

Thank you for including CPU power. This is glossed over and not mentioned in many other reviews. The OEM cooling design can radically change a chips performance, and in bad ones..it may not even reach AMD/Intel's base spec. This means shorter/lower boost if any. Glad to see the nitro has improved.

Another great review video. There is something special about this particular channel that makes it easy for people to understand the key points. There are a lot of other tech channels which provided lots of numbers and figures but personally I find them extremely overwhelming and not easy to follow (they are kind of boring too as they follow the same routine content over and over again). There are a lot more "personalities" in Hardware Canucks and it's one of my favorite tech channels. Thanks.

I am really glad that you analyze the display as well. I have been looking at nitro 5s from 2019 and they use the same damm display. I was initially hyped up about the fact that it is an IPS display but although very very few but some reviews at that time stated that it only 60% srgb.

I've got an AN15-57-79TD with the i7 and I'm pretty happy with it. I enjoy your reviews, and you did lead with the "Great Price, AMAZING Performance", but I got up in arms about a few facets of the video. I've figured out that I have to translate what laptop reviewers are saying from "I'm used to the best, but I'll get through this" level reviews, way down to what I'M used to. Don't take that personal, lol. All reviewers I've seen just can't seem to relate to the users who have had to buy cheap because of low funds (or buy cheap because it's smarter). But then, I started gaming when you manually set IRQ addresses and flipped DIP switches, so the worst tech today is still piles above what I remember clearly dealing with. So...I translate with allowances for First World Syndrome and the big money that is KZread, plus the fact that sponsors will give reviewers equipment that I would never spend the $$$ on. My machine is a 3050Ti machine, came with 8GB RAM. I added another 8GB stick and installed an EVO 860 500GB I had in a box somewhere so I could start gaming. Quickly filled that up, but I'll get a bigger M.2 later when I feel like it. Here are a few comments on the points raised from the perspective of someone who isn't tech- or money-awash... Firstly, Acer has been good to me. But then, I'm not a nitpicker about inconsequential stuff like bloat. The only issues that have dealt me hardship over the years are things with BIOS access that complicated Linux installs. Acer's are different there for sure, but again, nothing someone with any smarts can't handle. I've had 6 Acers in total now, among an occasional HP, Dell, and even Gateway. I've never had a hardware failure that I did not cause somehow. These comments about the flimsy hinges breaking are most likely from people who most likely find a lot of things in life flimsy...because they treat stuff like crap. And then blame the manufacturer for their stupid moves. I've never had a broken hinge on anything because I don't pick laptops up by the display or whatever. Using perception to understand the weakness of something makes you less likely to break stuff. I don't understand the need to game on battery because there are power outlets in pretty much every place I'll ever be. I even had one wired on my back patio so I could sit under the umbrella and frag. So unless you enjoy gaming in a pasture, I just don't know why battery life is even mentioned, ever, for any gaming laptop. That's the only ding I can really give my Nitro, especially considering I gave $839 for it a couple weeks ago, though I did need to add the $30 RAM stick. Again, bloatware? How is that any kind of big deal? It took me about two minutes of slow eye scanning to find the bloat and uninstall it. Another item that doesn't even deserve a mention, really on any laptop review. People who complain about having to remove bloat will sit through endless KZread videos about nothing, or (Yikes!) put up with ads all over their browsers, but then complain about how companies install bloat, which helps them buy their laptop at a lower price since the bloat pays some of the bills through advertising. If you REALLY don't want to deal with bloat, do a clean Windows install. Go ahead. Watch a KZread video about nothing while you wait. The keyboard. I can talk about this because I type all day every day. I've used some terrible keyboards from all over the place, and some of them were on much higher-end units, and I've used some great ones, and some of them were on cheap machines. Maybe I'm lucky, but the keyboard on this Nitro (which I'm using now) is pretty good. I don't have the flex people mention, but then I don't type with hammers. If it did flex that would be okay too, because number one I didn't have to pay $1500 for this laptop, and number two, as a human I am adaptable to less than optimum conditions. Flex is a problem? First World problem there that's not a problem. Yeah, this is enough. I appreciate the work you do, but I'm going to go jump into Halo, and then mow the grass. Sorry for the rant, but laptops are a lot like cars. You give a 16 year old driver a brand new top of the line whatever to park all day at school, so where do they go after that? The best is a hard act to top. Smart people start low and move up because YOU NEVER MISS WHAT YOU NEVER HAD. Economics 101 for the day. ✌

I got mine about a year and a half ago and love it. Bought it from a Micro Center so it was the "Platinum" edition with a 12700H, a 3070 and 32GB of RAM. Runs hot and loud but the performance is excellent, and I added two extra 2TB SSDs (one M.2, one SATA) and now have a great movie library and Steam library with me anywhere I go. With all the work I do in the Outback that leaves me with little to no connectivity, being able to just have a big entertainment library at my fingertips is a massive help.

I think a good budget gaming laptop franchise is the omen series. Their budget laptops don’t have the most recent 12th gen CPU’s but because they don’t they cost only $1100-1200 for a 3060 at 100w. Of course there’s the victus by omen too, but I think for the 3060, I’d go omen, and for 3050 ti victus. That being said, for anything more powerful for a 3060, I think different brands have better line ups. To me, these are the true budget options, (can play any games med-high settings for less then $1200 before tax) as someone who owns the OMEN 3060, I’ll tell you it’s not perfect, but I’m more than happy with what I got for like $1150. PS the deign is minimalistic, and isn’t too chunky either.

Got the sis an acer 5 a few years back purely for school...bc at the time it was 700$ to get her a 4c8t cpu....and an nvme/ssd...which wound up being an m-sata drive. Just so i knew her system would be fast and snappy. She demolished it by the time she graduated, and i had to give her my MSI which i got in 2019 spring...with the same specs as youre helios, only a pretty trash 120hz panel. At the time i was using it for cs:go/some pve games on a 27" 1080p monitor. So i "upgraded" it bc i gave her my msi...she doesnt even play AAA games just games like among us, friend/party like games. But she told me she liked the "Gamer" red aesthetic and having a fast pc/nvme drive, or having multiple programs open. I snagged an Amoled Omen as an open box deal since i use an external monitor i leaned into having a nice panel on the laptop for content consumption, or playing games like fallen order/nioh. If more laptops had speakers like the zephyrus laptops lately...id "consider" upgrading bc the speakers on those are pretty great and its almost a "TREND" that speaker sound/quality is an afterthought on "gaming" laptops. Yet is quite "PRIME" for content consumption/etc even gaming. Once actually experienced. As someone that mostly uses Headphones id call those(speakers/higher res panel)"upgrades" to laptops ive had, and something id consider down the road for a future laptop.

id suggest if you have access to a microcenter...the 3060 legion 5 with a 8c cpu and 1tb nvme. its usually on sale for 1099$. And if you need a larger screen they offer at 17". So if you get actual screen time with the panel like actually game on your laptop panel or work on it, id recommend the 17" too over 15". Unless youre leaning into a larger resolution panel or already have an external panel. Then you can still get the 15" legion for more portability. Where i live they have like 20 in stock for 1099$. I pushed my buddy to get one when D2 resurrected launched bc they wanted a new system/laptop and you get a 1tb drive for that price too...The biggest issue ppl have is that its not INTEL if they need thunderbolt support for work purposes. Even if youre budget is "smaller" than 1099 or if youre looking at 800-900$ range laptops i always recommend working/putting a little $ aside per check a few weeks/months down the road you are up to a higher tier/budget range. Just put off some expenses or bunker down as i call it...then get the better option "ALWAYS" of course there are diminishing returns as you go up the laptop/price range of course...but the legion 5 microcenter deal is pretty great bang for buck. I tested the system its pretty decent. IMO in pve games that arent multiplayer/competitive a frame cap 80-120 goes a long way with gpu/cpu thermals and system noise when playing pve/single player games. Also Gen 4 drive support/speed with intel.

Asus Zephyrus looks good but too pricey. So Lenovo it is.

Extremely happy with my purchase a couple of weeks ago. Bought the Nitro 5 with i7 11800H CPU and RTX 3060 with 32GB RAM and 500GB storage. I promptly added a second NVME 500 GB drive and 64GB RAM which was the easiest upgrade I have ever done in over 35 years of building PC or upgrading laptops. Super impressed with that. After some tweaking the services and NVidia software I get on average between 40-60 FPS in Star Citizen on Very High quality and volumetric clouds off. Good job Acer!

The design looks old because IT IS OLD. Aside from minimal changes, the overall external and internal design of the Nitro 5 hasn't changed since it was introduced in 2016, as the successor of the Aspire VX with which it already shared some design cues. That is one of the main reasons why the Nitro 5 is so cheap, its design matrix has been HEAVILY amortized by this point. Its moderate success (by sales numbers) is also due to the fact it is widely available in emerging markets with the lowest configurations still sporting GTX1050s and HDDs.

Every laptop user should know this. 1. Just “raise the bottom” let more air into the machine and you will found CPU&GPU each them reduce 10~15°C or in high usage will have more efficacy 2. You shouldn’t be use “laptop cooler”, cuz that effectiveness actually just like you put two bottle caps under laptop to raise it. But the cooler still use your limited power and it will let CPU&GPU become hungrier. Unless it has an “independent power supply”. There also very many ways let your experience better, like “gamer most of the time should limit cpu’s PL1&PL2 and offset voltage” “discrete graphics card overclock”. “Replace the thermal paste and clean the fan dust”. Sorry my poor English, hope it's not too hard to read. Just want help you guys. From Taiwan

Frame rate tax in a laptop won’t bother a console gamer. Streaming quality would be better. There’s available storage for content and game library on a 2.5” ssd. It’s portable, so that’s appeal to less caviar frame rate chasing fps gamers or stupid high champagne quality whatever isn’t an fps.

I felt the same way compared to the legion 5 with a 120-130w 3060 based on cpu load, and a 5800h, 1tb nvme. Compared to the 3060 acer which apparently hits 140w, and a "HIGHER CLOCKING" 12500h. Which id actually like to see/proof of myself. And a gen 4 drive...i cant really justify the "cost" unless that system actually pushes 140w 3060 and 35-40w on the cpu and "NEAR" 4.5 etc on 1-2p cores...if not "MORE" as they claim to have "enabled". Most likely for pure renders/cpu loads. Unless its actually for gaming/shared loads. I saw "text" about claims of 140w on the acer 3060 and higher clocks on single core yet the tgp/cooling capability and this vid clearly shows 75w 3050ti(vs 95w), and 100w for the 3060 vs 140w...which is why i mention the Legion 5 15-17" 17" being more ideal from a bigger screen/keyboard space standpoint imo usability vs portability(5 vs 5i pro) Thin/portable usually costing more
