Acedia: The Noonday Devil

Ойын-сауық

Fr. Mike Schmitz delivers a timely video in the midst of our Lenten journey as he explores the ancient concept of acedia. This temptation tends to come in the middle of the day and can obscure our resolve by distracting us from God’s purpose for us. While even great saints were tempted by it, the remedy is something we can all receive with a little faith.
Fr. Mike’s videos are now available as podcasts at ascensionpresents.com/category....

I'm not a religious person and I subscribed to this channel as a general curiosity about catholicism. But I must say that of some of Fr. Mike videos hit me right to the heart. This one in particular made me realize many things that I've been avoiding in my life. To be honest, this is quite troubling that a 6 minute video can have so much effect on me....

I suffer greatly from Acedía to the point of suicide thoughts because I didn’t understand. Thank you for the explanation. I still feel like running away and I stopped praying rosary and adoration, I have no friends and dialogue with my family turns into disagreements. This makes total sense, wish I could jump past all of this and fast forward.

Just know that Pope Francis is singularly focused on restoring Assembly Life to every parish, where every parish member will be actively involved in Being the Body of Christ, where your mission and the gifts to accomplish that mission will be revealed, where acedia dies an instant death. This is why we must support the Holy Father's efforts that are seemingly resisted universally among the clerical class.

You need to try the silent prayer. Try to sit back and observe your thoughts as they come with your eyes closed and your hands folded in prayer. And just stay focused on your hands. Remind yourself that you are not in control, God's will be done, you are not God it's not for you to decide what happens. It may sound weird but a lot of our depression/ anxiety and restlessness comes from fear that we may be doing the wrong thing or that it will not be worth while, we're afraid that even if we do everything the way we planned, it won't turn out how we want. Or maybe it did go to plan and you're still not happy. Searching for something more. The truth is it likely won't go how you planned though, and the fear is what's holding you back. Fear comes from the deceiver, if we can realize all thoughts are lies and we need to be one with God and come out of our imagination. That's the idea behind "be still and know" and "pray without ceasing". Be still aka don't move because movement is thought in action, and know the truth, which is that you are not God, it's not for you to judge or decide what will or could or should happen. Accepting that is truly trusting and loving God even when your mind tells you 100 reasons to question it. And praying without ceasing is a good way to come out of or ignore and resist your thoughts of reasons to doubt or to avoid what you need to do. Do this a couple times a day when you're feeling overwhelmed just for 10-15 minutes come out of your mind and be still and know God, and I’m telling you God will start to show you the way, you'll be in his presence and if you can trust, it will all work out fine. You gotta believe it and resist the doubt as hard as you can. It's hard but nothing He has put in your path is greater than your ability to overcome it. "For greater is He in you than he who is in the world"

wow.,.. this i think is addressing exactly what I have been feeling too... as a stay at home mom of 5 boys that homeschools! I often feel this way. And there are times when I look at the amount of serving and dying to self that I must do daily and I get weary. I get bored with it, I struggle to see its value and sometimes even pick activities that allow me to "check out" rather than continue to engage, and serve and empty myself... and often I wondered, "how do I die to self and not be bitter about losing myself? I think this message hits on the heart of the issue... Christ's love. Because in the giving away of myself, I am hoping in faith that there is something or someone BETTER than myself... is not this the love of Christ?

So, free time. The bow that is strung too long, the string breaks. You must have a break, fun! God made laughter! Say your morning offering, making everything you do offered to Him. Even naps. The Holy Ghost guides us and sometimes we need a nap. Not want, need. Do it.

Once again thank you for this wonderful explanation and I am good at procrastination & not doing what I should be doing. I've been in mourning for 18 mos. and I'm starting to get restless because I'm an artist and I haven't made any art, paintings or drawings since a very tragic event. I've started praying the rosary more often for Lent and I plan on continuing. I know it's helping me. I'm getting better each day but I know I need to try and not think about my feelings and just do the work I'm supposed to do.

Annette: I'm sorry for your loss... I can commiserate, having lost a dear family member four years ago. God inspired you to pray the Rosary, and that is wonderful, because as we meditate on the life of Our Lord, He shows us how He and His holy Mother also suffered this loss. And as we unite our sorrow to theirs, it becomes a redemptive sorrow rather an empty and exhausting exercise. Also, I would add that you may want to attend Mass more often if you can, and/or go and visit Jesus in an Adoration Chapel or Church. He is waiting there for you, to heal and comfort you with His Presence. Peace!

I think a perfect example to remove acedia altogether is to follow Saint Therese of Lisieux in the desert/oasis of silence and prayer with our Lord the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I watched the play that Eva Hernandez did on The story of a Soul of St Therese. She played her life so perfectly that it taught me so much which results in the removal of acedia. It's on Prime Amazon.

I have been struggling with this for a long time, now it has a name: acedia. I have a deep tendency to resist studying, when I actually have to study a lot because I have to deal with lives. Sometimes I start praying to please the Lord as a compensation for not studying, but He always calls my attention on this one thing I am supposed to do and don’t: study. Thanks a lot for this video, Father Mike! From now on, I’ll try my best to beat acedia! May the Lord help me and the others struggling with this! Pray for me 🙏🏻

I just watched this video. It’s two years old, I’ve never seen it. I must’ve been meant to watch it because this is exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you Fr. Mike for making it.

Thank you so much father Mike!! I was literally planning to go to confession and talk about how I've been wanting to run away and because I know about the noonday devil from listening to Father Ripperger. I was going to ask to have him cast out. And I found this video thank you so very much. I will stay in my hut !

In the noonday I usually feel like a hollow undead, like there is nothing within me, like my soul is completely drained. It makes me feel apatic, indiferent, and everything looks meaningless. It is as if I was already dead, as if the world was dead. When I feel like that, I remember the books of wisdom, because they have this kind of melancholic feeling.
