Ace Combat 5 (Emulated) - M03: Narrow Margin

War, at last. A pretty small one, ir seems? But war nonetheless.
It's interesting to notice a lot of the dialogue that typically draws this mission (and I imagine others) out comes "bundled". I managed to skip much of it here, but I noticed that if I was just a tad slower, another block of lines would play all in a row (phalanx fire on the docks, the infamous "X flight" orders, etc.) before the mission update, regardless of whether you clear the map in the meanwhile. Silly PA, please don't do this again in AC7.
That said, I do enjoy this mission. A bit drawn out but there's only one section of dead time. Plus, as I'll mention throughout this gameplay, dead times allows me to work on my cinematography - AC5 is almost free class time in it.

    One of AC5's biggest bug bears when it comes to dialogue, indeed. It's also funny when the dialogue says stuff that flat out doesn't happen. "Oh, thanks for the heads-up, you idiot!" BEST CHARACTER That Zipang kill was really close. Always wondered what was the deal with the AC5 aces. ACZ basically had a documentary about every single named Ace you shoot down. And some of the later Aces and their planes are... Weird...

    Each Ace Combat has a at least one Sci-Fi plane. I enjoyed the wide selection of real-world planes that were available in AC5, despite each aircraft only having a single Special Weapon option.

    One thing I liked about this mission is not just the chatter the subtitles draw attention to but also the hectic background comms that are barely audible. OTOH, if you actually pay attention to the amount of actual models in the mission you recognize the Osean 'Third Fleet' amounts to maybe 5 vessels, so the effectiveness of the sense of 'scale' diminishes on subsequent playthroughs.

    I think the scale of the fleet is likely due to resource limitation on the ps2 at the time. You can definitely see in later generations that the fleets can be a lot bigger in scale.

    @@alex-marquette The Invincible Fleet in AC4 was massive and the later Yuke fleet is at least 10 ships

    The brief only says that "Ships from the Third Fleet". It does not denote that all the Third Fleet was there. However Wardog also is arriving late to the engagement, so it could also be possible that other ships had already been targeted and sunk.

    I vividly remember being a kid, I just got done with mission two of this game, I was getting bored and was ready to swap to play some other game, then I said "One more level then I'm done" That next mission was this one. I beat the game the next day.

    I watch this let's play to learn English. This game have a very intressting lore, a tonn of intressting lines and great voice actors. I experience every mission together with the characters.

    I love how this soundtrack fits this mission. It kicks in with its most epic part right at the beginning, right when you *really* get there, when the real open war starts for you.

    Things finally get somewhat serious! Having skipped some of the dialogue helped too, nothing kills the drama like hearing people struggling and enemy communications when there are no enemies in sight. :P "I can't take it anymore." Dude! It's Mission 3 and the first real battle in the war! I sure hope Osea's military has a little more backbone in AC7! Oh hey, Zipang and his flares, he almost escaped destruction here, even though he didn't actually count as a kill in the debriefing.

    To be fair, Chopper literally just watchded a plane crash intonthe sea near overboard men, literally lighting them on fire as they drown. Then again, Osea literally witnesses the aftermath of brutal war crimes (non-combatants and children) in Mission 17 and *commits* crimes in Mission 18 (pillaging a breakaway state holding refugees for their supplies and ammo).

    It was interesting to discover that, specially the fact they use both Osean and Yuktobanian lines in tandem in ACX. But asset reuse has always been something I'm cool with, and ACX does it well.

    One thing I noticed for first time watching back at my dorm is that there is a black bar in cutscenes at the bottom but not at the top. Do the cutscenes have a weird aspect ratio or something? Or is it something to do with PAL encoding? Also I hadn't noticed before, but is the draw distance of AC5 somehow worse than 04? I remember 04 having further horizons than the 5 or so miles it appears to be here (St. Hewlett city coming into view beyond 'fog').

    Pretty sure this is the NTSC version considering it runs at 60 fps. But anyway, I went and checked my PAL version on console and it's pretty much the same as this aside of the subtitles font. However, that's when the game is set to 16:9, on a 16:9 screen. When it's set to 4:3 it does letterbox the cutscene into this ultra-wide format with black bars on top and bottom. Which makes sense, since on a 4:3 screen you would need that for the cutscene to remain in widescreen format. Gameplay is just rendered at the intended aspect ratio so that's not necessary there.

    Oh so it was letter-boxed on 4:3 screen but it was like a 21:9 (or thereabouts) instead 16:9, which is why it doesn't fill up the whole 16:9.

    Yeah, pretty much. It's actually not 16:9 natively either, since there's that smaller black portion on the bottom, but close enough.

    These missions already have few enemies, I'd have even less to do if I set them to attack. It's more entertaining to watch like this, too.

    Is this SP new game? Seems so when seeing aces coming out. So unfortunate you can't use OGL.. I think you can try this for clean video for Hrimpaxi and SOLG run. UserHacks_SpriteHack=2 UserHacks_merge_pp_sprite=1 (You have to add this manually) UserHacks_HalfPixelOffset=3 I'm pretty sure you're using HPO 3 already, but not sure above 2 will work on DX11. They seems to fix burst missile and SOLG V2, check around 14:45 and 31:40 for shadow and shockwave fix kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYqnqNmEcdyefdo.html

    It is, yeah. I've already capped the whole thing, and used the Wild Arms Offset in foggy missions that cause the misaligned sprite. I use the GUI for hacks so I'm not sure what those would correspond to, but I only have Normal (Vertex) as an option for HPO. No issues with burst missiles or the SOLG either - I never actually witnessed the bloken explosions you showed on your vid a while back. For example - i.imgur.com/eteiFO8.png

    Are you using AVX1? There should be HPO special in newer versions. And about burst missile, I mean multiple explosion under 5000 altitude. I'll check if that settings works on dx11 anyway. Btw, seems like you also having issue with phantom cockpit, hmm..
