Accuracy and ricochet testing H&N field target trophy green lead free air rifle pellets..
Спорт
After testing numerous Gamo lead free pellets its time to test the H&N ftt green.
i have previously used the h&n barracuda green and they performed reasonably well. hopefully the ftt green are reasonably accurate too
after using the gamo lethal pellets i was much more curious about the dangers of ricochets. the h&n seem to be softer than the likes of the gamo raptor pb free pellets.
the h&n are fairly accurate at shorter ranges and dont ricochet as badly as some of the harder brands of pellet.
shortly i will be testing the pb free jsb exacts and also some of the lead free zan slugs.
Hopefully we wont be forced into a lead ban. it will likely mean an end to target shooting as we know it.

I got a ricochet from a lead free pellet (RWS Hyperdome in .177), managed to penetrate my jeans and gave me a properly nasty bruise. That was at thirty metres and came straight back at me from a pellet catcher. I wear shooting glasses all the time now with lead-frees. Might give those H&Ns a go though, they grouped way better than the RWSs.

Luckily it wasn't in the face eh, that could have been nasty. I use lead lined traps now for most of my target work, much safer and also very quiet.😉

@David Paylor I've got a couple of videos on the channel of the last 2 I made mate. They work really well and much safer. Kinda ironic though that leads one of the safest materials to collect lead free ammo 😆

@David Paylor awesome thanks for being a part of the channel 😉 Bit of a random selection of stuff on here, hopefully it's useful info and a bit of lighthearted fun too..
Having used both Baracuda Green and FTT not-so-green from the same rifle, I found that the BG were easily over-spun. So at 20J where the FTTs are like lasers, the BGs would spiral all over the place, dialling all the way back to about 6J the BGs are quite nicely behaved, but much too slow to play nicely at any sort of range. My improvised chrono puts the BGs at ~310m/s at 20J, so that's well into the transonic regime. The heavier FTTs stay at a much more reasonable 270m/s, which is at the border of transonic, but more subsonic than anything else. Added benefit is that at 6J the ricochet risk really isn't there. However I find that the BGs do penetrate way more than you'd expect at that kind of power. For instance a 1l water bottle that will catch a 6J FTT, will not catch a BG. I've lined my portable pellet catcher with window sealing putty, and the BGs dig way deeper into it than the FTTs do. For me the biggest use is in pesting around the orchard and market garden. Even if the cats get a critter before I do, at least the pellet will be in one piece and it's not lead. By the same logic, even if I miss a pellet during clean up, it's not lead.
Good job you was wearing them safety glasses on your head just in case 🤦👍👍👍 great video as always 👌👌
Thanks for putting the effort in as usual very helpful 👍

Thanks for watching mate. I'm tempted to do some more ricochet testing on a much larger and thicker foam board. You notice I managed to put 2 ontop of each other into the foam 😆
Very interesting and certainly the best none lead pellet so far and as you say, pretty respectable at 25 yards 👍

Hi mate, yep they aren't too bad at the shorter ranges. With some tweeks to the rifle I'm sure the performance could be improved slightly too.

Well... I didn't shoot much lead free pellets yet but the ricochet factor sure is one disadvantage that I didn't really think about before 🤔 _the real question is what is the advantage._

Hi mate, truth be told there's no good reasons to be using lead free, unless for very very specific pest Control applications. Everything else is just nonsensical

I've only looked into it a bit and it seems like there's an argument for food chain and water pollution when it goes to lead used in shotgun shooting but for airguns the numbers seem pretty negligible, Britons will have been moving some amount of lead around for a really really long time and that with the ethical concerns of accidentally doing animal cruelty it seems like this is a really shortsighted piece of regulation and I hope a suitable replacement can be found if the legislators don't change this.

@@Fordddyyy Here in Kenada you cannot use lead near water... Problem solved. But I also can't use lead for migratory birds.. like a mourning dove... And it is also not small game via this definition... So no airgun dove hunting for me!
I remember trying lead free solder when it was introduced , I went back to leaded solder as it was so much better. I hope this isnt true with these lead free pellets
Yay, he's back. Quick question, do you know where I can buy laminate rifle blanks in the UK? Ordered one from lamina Finland but refused it and sent it back due to the 40% import duty /vat needed to receive the item ( just out of principle) an extra £61😱

Lamnia is the best option for a single panel into the uk,in a timely manner. It's expensive stuff, luckily because the carriage is free you don't get copped vat or import on that part.. Still puts a multi colour blank just over 200 quid.
Thanks for testing FTT Green. I've noticed that slow speed (under 175 m/s) is more likely to ricochet. Not safe for junior Air rifles.
@tillysgunstocks
Жыл бұрын
Definitely not safe for use in junior rifles. I would personally not have the lead free ammo anywhere near juniors learning to shoot. We are adults and know the risks, too dodgy even with safety glasses for the youngsters.😉
Didn’t think at all about ricochet’s with lead free, another reason against them. May be have to look at different types of barrel configurations to shoot lead free more accurately ?
@tillysgunstocks

They can be really dodgy mate. I've had to use pb free on a couple of shoots and it's not fun. If it all happens we will need to look seriously at different reg setups and barrels.
I have found that these are the only pellets My CZ P09 Co2 pistol actually shoots reliably and accurately .
What scope, what magnification?
Alright mate, what do you think about lead free slug's. The lead slug's are to heavy for sub 12 ft-lb so being as lead free are lighter do you think they will be any good. Just a thought but you would think so. It would be interesting to find out
@tillysgunstocks
Жыл бұрын
Hi mate, in sub12 .177 the 10gn lead slugs are an OK weight, but closing up the gap between a slug and decent pellet, speed(power) wise is the most important thing to allow us to get the speeds up(or atleast fine tune the fps a bit) and also the barrel twist rates need to speed up a bit. I'm working on sourcing the parts to put it on film but it's pretty blooming expensive getting the barrels and bits to do it I've also got some of the 1st pb free zan slugs on the way as we speak,so I'll be able to test them on the channel here. They are too expensive right now tbh but for the channel it's worth it. I still think the lack of mass and barrel twist rates are going to go against them (pb free) but it'll be fun to find out...

@@tillysgunstocks just a quick question, do you make stocks ? I've got a brocock concept xr and I was thinking of getting a stock like the brocock bantam. I did think of getting one of them but they are bottle and mine has a cylinder so would look bad. If you do make them how much would it be roughly . If you don't do you know of any good places to try . Thanks for your reply cheers
Our club has banned lead free pellets on the indoor 25m range on account of ricochets
comparing the paper holes between your 25 / 45 yrd targets, it's looking like they are starting to keyhole a bit at 45 yards ?

They may well have been, however the card I've got at the moment tears up really easily so it's hard to say. The impacts into the lead backstop all looked as I'd expect though. More investigation needed 😉

@@tillysgunstocks I'm beginning to wonder if the reason they're not much good after 25 yrds or so is they're starting to lose their dynamic stability due to their low weight.. be interesting to see the paper holes at 75 yards if you manage to get one to hit it at that distance haha ( the problem being the pellet accuracy not you ofc )
How to order
I may have missed it in the video, but did you test speed/power through a crono?

Going out of business ifnthey don't get their arses in gear soul be my guess , if they can't get lead free to be as accurate , and at distance with around the same hitting power as lead ...... they're finished
wish i could hit a group like that at 45 with lead pellets 🤣🤣🤣🤣 actually they weren’t bad at all at 25 out of the bunch i have seen there pretty good . think your bang on not so bad in 22 you can get a bit of weight still in the pellets but 177 not so much so out passed 30 your going to struggle with any lead free version at the moment. i can imagine manufacturers are really trying to get their game together but very tricky to get the weight in the pellets that are going to be economically viable for us to buy

I very tried a few different lead free pellets and short range accuracy can be acceptable. BUT the ricochet risk is WAY to high at those shorter ranges .as such I won't shoot them any more they are far too dangerous and should be banned completely as unsafe for use . Please use your influence to get a total ban on lead free airgun pellets in the UK .

I agree,the whole lead free thing is bullshit and will result in dangerous ricochets inhumane dispach of live quarry. The whole climate story is a lie and really about removing more of our freedoms. Lead free ammunition is really a back door hunting ban. Try using lead sheeting to stop ricochets.
Keep stacking up lead..lead free utter crap
Its not the accuracy which is my main concern , not even if it ricochets , its the PRICE , god help the industry IF there's major restrictions on lead ammo .. it will put a VAST amount of busnesses out of , well , business ... RFD's , gun ranges , manufacturers .. im in the process of putting a few tins to one side just in case ... though I don't think there will be a blanket ban ..

Prices will always be higher on new low volume products. But this all changes when there’s manufacturing at scale, the shot gunners have been lead free for awhile so it’s not all doom and gloom. It does actually force the manufacturers to innovate which is a good thing I’m willing to bet that the outcome will be everyone transitioning over to a lead free slugs with higher BC and retained energy.
Can you imagine using those lead free pellets in a small ish gardens.my little ranges are 13 metres and other 17 metres from inside the shed. And there is no way I would use them. THERE NOT SAFE.Using lead I capture all spent pellets in pellets traps that have plasticine in and they are inside wooden boxes . Disabled shooters like me who love sport, BUT can't get out would be finished if there was a lead ban.
Not in to these lead free pellets , just my opinion, stick to lead , abit like the electric car stuff ,,, who gets these ideas

Sadly we might not have much option going forward if they go ahead with the lead ammo ban. Atleast the manufacturers are trying to get some stuff out that's lead free. Some better than others but none as accurate or humane as lead. Yet..

I can foresee a lot of unnecessary damage and suffering from the lead free pellets (just another climate charade grift) and potentially a way to ban all air guns “well with the risk of ricocheting from the lead free ammunition we have to ban air guns” for our own safety of course

I have no problem with lead pellets being banned. With the introduction of pcp guns the manufacturers have made a for out of shooter. New rules force them to innovate or die. All the have to do is figure out the metallurgy and looking as the work on slugs with high BC and retained energy the future looks very interesting.

Honestly I can't see the lead ban working as you'll still be able to shoot lead at ranges and on hft courses if they prove they can remove X amount of lead from the ground year etc, but I can see membership fees increasing to cover the cost and when it comes to pest control you would just carry some lead free pellets with you but still us lead pellets.
