Accsoon SeeMo Review: Turn your iPhone into a video monitor/recorder!

Ғылым және технология

The Accsoon SeeMo allows you to take the HDMI signal from your camera, and allows an iPhone or iPad to be used as a video monitor, recorder and even streambox! The SeeMo is the first tool of its kind, and quite affordable, so the big question is: does it work? Jordan Drake has been using one for a few weeks and has some impressions.

    When I first saw this product get announced I assumed it wouldn't work very well. I'm very happy to see you guys make a video about it to highlight how it works. I think the product does a lot of what I'm personally looking for on my 2nd camera or when I want to build out something more light weight. I'm still rocking internally recorded H.265 of a pair of Canon R3 bodies and it works well for me. All the monitors in this $150-250 price range feel pretty plasticky and poorly built with a monitor that's typically inaccurate. So I may end up checking this product out...I like the idea of an iPad Mini being a monitor...hmmmmm. LOL

    For those who don't see a use case: Yesterday I shot a set of videos with my mirrorless camera setup to take home and edit with Premiere Pro. Then someone said: “Hey, can you just give me a quick clip I can send to [important person] so we can see if he likes the lighting?” So I had to haul out the laptop… would have been so much easier with something like this.

    I'm looking forward to picking up the Android version of this (the M1), but there's something I find funny about the fact that I only found out about the M1 due to all the major review outlets covering the SeeMo because it's iOS. I tried looking for reviews of the M1, and the only one I could find on one of the major (by my estimation) review channels was from Gordon Liang.... almost 8 months ago. I'd love to see more of y'all cover the Android version since their software works even with older Android phones (which apps like, for example, Monitor+ do not). I, for example, still have two Pixel XLs (the original) that I intend now to use as small studio monitors for making KZread videos, and those phones can be picked up for about $50 now, if someone wants a dedicated setup without using their primary phone. The same is true, obviously, of older iPhones, but I'm not sure how compatibility works in that scenario, and older iPhones tend to be more expensive than older Android phones.

    Right on time when I just made a set up to use my android as my monitor. Same concept, MicroHDMI to HDMI to Capture Card to OTG. This looks a lot cleaner, but I only paid at most $20 for all the cables and the Capture Card.

    NOTHING can be done about HDMI lag. That’s why I think camera mfrs are missing an opportunity to add value to their cameras by bypassing HDMI altogether and creating apps that will let you tie into the camera’s low-level functions via their USB ports similar to the way that tethering is already accomplished. Not only would you have super low latency image feeds, but you could also incorporate camera controls onto the phone’s or tablet’s touch screen.

    I'm more on the photo side, but the 2.8/16-55G is a great little lens in terms of IQ and versatile range. The focus is also very fast and silent, and there's minimal focus breathing. The electronic focus ring may or may not be a problem, depending on what you want to do.

    @@MarkBennettCameraCrisis yeah that 16mm is on my list, I have the 30mm on my GH6 but it suffers from great CA, I also have the 11-20mm from Tamron but don’t know if it’ll make sense having that and the Sigma 16, or better the 17-28mm from Tamron too, that one has internal zooming, it’s hard having so much options 😅

  • @ziginox

    @ziginox

    Жыл бұрын

    I have to disagree with the Sigma 1.4 recommendation. I have all three, and they're great photo lenses. I especially love the 56mm. All three have significant focus breathing. The AF on the 30mm can make clicking noises at times, and the aperture actuator on the 56 is super loud. I wouldn't go after full frame glass, unless you have another full frame body. While the 16-55 is steep, full frame lenses will only be bulkier and not have as useful of a zoom range. Granted, that all depends on what range you need.

    I think it is about time. No it isn't perfect. Nothing is. Not sure I agree with it needing to be $250.00 with the features Jordon is talking other than maybe a better cold shoe. Power button is not that big a deal. Increase the brightness of the power LED sure. Charge the phone would nice too. $179.00 price point is right. You're going to get more people in on that than a higher price. It is brand new. It will need to be a success and need to seed further development if any. Be realistic here folks. I hope later we get more of what Jordan says, but for what it is. Many products fail trying to be too much out of the gate. Just be good at your core, then further refine it with a few nice haves. Nice 1st effort actually. Stop inflating a product for it isn't.

    Seems more like a "solution in search of a problem" situation to me. Maybe I'm getting old but I don't get the impulse to cram a phone into every tech situation. A dedicated monitor is going to be the same size, close to the same price, has less lag, and most have options for power out to the camera or other accessories. And I won't have to turn my phone to airplane mode to avoid having a call or notification interrupt a shot.

    You're not wrong, but there are use cases for this. I shoot documentaries, and need to travel light. I will always have my phone with me, and sometimes a backup phone for safety (and to put in an international sim etc). This is a much smaller accessory than an external recorder, and would not increase the weight of my setup or take up too much space in my camera bag. Just one use-case scenario that I can think of at the moment, at least
