Opeth Reaction: All Things Will Pass Reaction
My 4 take-aways from NewPeth: 1) Mikael is man of many voices. 2) Keyboard Guy is bringing it. 3) That is one thought-provoking lyric. 4) Their record label responds to copyright claims in a matter of hours saying, "No, Lauren, you can't have the $3.07 you would've made from this video even though you're spreading our music to new people. But thanks for pausing."

That ending left me on the verge of tears during the first listen, could be because of being their fan from such a long time & with all that debate (hatred) on their new musical journey. How could you dislike such a prestige music? Doesn't matter if it's Old Opeth or New Opeth, I have always felt connected to this band's magic and it's enough for this lifetime. Anyway, next suggestion - "Opeth - Faith in Others" :)

The first album that had no growls was Heritage in 2011 and there's been none on any album since. Heritage was pretty polarizing among Opeth fans at the time, I think it's a little more well received now. Btw, I love Street Spirit, but would never leave an Opeth song for it lol

I voted for this just for the ending honestly; even though Opeth is my favorite band, they rarely invoke emotions, but that ending always makes me feel emotional. I'll leave the suggestions to the other fans since I love old and new Opeth equally. Also, the more you listen to newer albums the more similarities you'll notice, they kept a lot of their old sounds.

While I do miss the growls, Mikael's vocal abilities grew a lot since he switched to cleans only. And I'm not saying losing growls did that, I just suppose he had to get better with cleans to convey the emotions without the growls..

Awesome, you've finally gotten to their later stuff. Mikael's vocal skills have reached another level on this album. Nearly every song on this album has it's own sound with Mikael stretching his peak vocal skills to the max. Lovelorn Crime, Next of Kin etc.. all great tracks. Whether it's Oldpeth or Newpeth, I love both equally. My mood at the time decides which era I'm going for when listening to Opeth. Their first non-metal album was Damnation (2003) and was a one-off thing, paired with Deliverance (originally planned to be a double album but the label said no... it's since been released as the double album Mikael wanted). After that they released Ghost Reveries and Watershed, their last two demon-vocal albums. After the Watershed album and tour Mikael began writing the music for their next album in the same style as Watershed but his heart wasn't in it anymore and he wasn't happy with anything he had written and deleted it. He actually wanted to write songs/albums like Heritage, Pale Communion etc. years earlier but he was afraid that it would lose their fanbase completely. After having so much anxiety ridden trouble writing yet another metal album with demon vocals the bass player, Martin Mendez, told him to just follow his own heart and do what he actually wanted to do. Which he did. When Heritage was released three years after Watershed it caused a major divide among the Opeth fanbase. Many just refused to have anything to do with anything they released after Watershed while many others really got into the new prog rock style, still tinged with the dark Opeth'y stuff we love. As time passed it seems that some die hard fans that previously didn't want anything to do with the new direction softened up to the new style since it was still so well written by top tier musicians. As of today Opeth is just as big and respected (if not bigger) as they were when they released Ghost Reveries. Many new fans flocked to the band and a lot of them worked their way backwards from their Newpeth era to the older stuff and got into their older style, getting used to the "demon" with time since the music itself was still brilliantly awesome. Cheers Lauren and all fellow Opeth fans. :)

I agree with doing the rest of the poll. It's a great song, it just doesn't fit in my playlist of Opeth songs I listen to constantly, which is basically their first 8 albums. Street spirit is an amazing song on an equally amazing album. I would like to see you check out where they started, and by their 3rd album My Arms Your Hearse, you could tell they were just getting better and were going to be a monster of a band, and it's no surprise that their 4th album Still Life is regarded as one of their best if not their best. But Orchid, their first album with songs like In the Mist she was Standing, The Twilight is my Robe, Forest of October, and Apostles in Triumph showcase an incredible talent that knows where it want to go. My favorite is My Arms Your Hearse. Maybe try a poll of each album?

You can actually see a lot about their new direction in the Watershed album itself. Just that it has growls and the heavy songs in Watershed are REALLY heavy. Eventhough Watershed is one of my favourite albums, I could not care less about Heritage, the first Newpeth album. They have improved eversince. Pale Communion has some great songs and so does their last album. "Faith in others" and "Heart in Hand" are good songs to listen to, other than the songs already suggested here.

The change caught some people by surprise, but it wasn't really sudden. I mean, in 2002/3 they put out an all clean vocals non-metal prog album called "Damnation". Their last couple death metal growling albums following that also had some tracks that showed definite signs of change. But the complete shift happened around 2012, I think, when "Heritage" came out, and it's been that way on the three following albums. Mikael has said in no uncertain terms that he and Opeth are done with growling and death metal in general (although I assume they will still perform some of their old stuff at live performances). Almost the entire band is different from their full death metal days- only Mikael and the bassist remain.

I really like the intro to this song, though the rest of it didn't do a whole lot for me as a first listen. As for the final lyric, it's very thought provoking and relatable. I can say that I have had everything end and have returned home, metaphorically speaking. The question of "is it worth it" took some time to be answered, but it was a "yes". It's never too late.

I think it's interesting to compare clean songs from Oldpeth to Newpeth. Because like people have said - it's not necessarily the absent of growls that makes some fans disinterested in Newpeth, it's that the atmosphere, vibe and "Opethness" that we all love is absent. In its own Newpeth is great but I understand the shift is too much for some to handle. So I recommend Hours of Wealth, Benighted and Harvest.

Opeth’s sound took a turn towards jazz fusion beginning with their 2011 Heritage album, followed up by their Pale Communion & Sorceress albums, all of which have clean vocals throughout. Even their most recent album, In Cauda Venenum has clean vocals but the songs in this album are less jazz fusion sounding. To me, I’m not a fan of those three previous albums. Yes, there are a few great songs within each but I do like the music throughout In Cauda Venenum. I would suggest reacting to Dignity or Heart In Hand off the same album.

Ackchyually it was not the first one, my friend:) Damnation was the one, but I don't think anyone complained then, as that was kind of part of their sound, and also there was no statement from the band that they leave the growls behind forever. Looking back though, Heritage is a musical masterpiece imo, and though I'm emotionally more attached to Pale Communion, I think Heritage might be the best one they made since Watershed.

Sorry I haven't really gotten into this album. Heart in Hand is pretty good but this newest Opeth just isn't Opeth. It isn't the lack of growling but the lack of movement, the lack of the awesome never ending guitar riffs and amazing drumming. Opeth once wisely used harmonic structures and dissonances heard in classical music of the late 19th and early 20th century composers. You could hear Webern, Schenberg and Stravinsky ideas in some of their earlier stuff. Opeth was never really a band that did a lot of shredding nor needed to be. Just their rhythm guitar parts were enough to keep the most skilled guitarists guessing on how they were doing it. Not to mention some absolutely wonderful acoustic work. This stuff is just way too static and while their production is always top notch, I find it lacking in the emotional roller coaster ride their earlier work provided.
