Accidentally Thin Live Edge Bowl - Wood Turning
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
A real nice piece of Apple wood, tight bark, lots of possibilities! I almost immediately turned the side walls too thin! I meant to make it thin but not this thin! LOL! I had to spend the rest of the turning time being careful not to go through the side wall while still thinning down the rest of the bowl to match. It was a little scary at times but in the end, I love it! Finished in Feed & Wax.

I don't often see apple wood turned. So, thank you very much! I like the gentle golden glow of the wood. That, plus the dark edge, with the curve of the piece, makes me think of a very large, crisp potato chip! Thank you!

That is a real beauty, the kind that needs a home where it gets to be seen, enjoyed, and used. Another nice feature of Howard's is that it's very easy to freshen it up when people keep touching the bowl.

Got to be one of the prettiest pieces of Apple I have seen Phil. I see the fish and the critter on the inside. That does look like a horse but I first saw some sea creature eating chunk of wood on the bottom of the ocean. I guess I have chunks of wood on my mind LOL. Dang I think I was 30 seconds away from being first but still happy I got a good seat to what this cool video. Keep keeping us entertained my friend, Gary

There are some interesting colors and patterns in the grain, Gary. Sometimes apple can be quite plain but I got lucky! I'm glad you could see some creatures in this one, that's always fun. Thanks a lot for spending some of your time with me, my friend, much appreciated! 😊

The chunk of apple wood: The Backstory! In the winter we had a couple years ago, there was a severe ice storm. It brought down trees and branches all over, power outages everywhere lasting days. There was hardwood available all over! There's a small woods just below our property, mixed hardwood, mostly white ash and hawthorn, but also scattered remnants of an old orchard. Several types of pear, apple and cherry. In the spring when I went to check the storm damage, I found one apple tree had been toppled and the rootball was heaved out of the ground. Lots of suckers on the trunk, but it was doomed. So I put it out of its misery! Cut several nice sections of trunk and a really large 3-way crotch. Eventually, as it seasoned, the trunk sections cracked deeply lengthwise, so I used splitting wedges and halved them. Turned a couple and just knew that both Phil and Gary (The Papa) would love to turn some. Gary got the big crotch (he was nearly drooling over it when he visited) and I sent the half-round to Phil. And now you know the rest of the story! 😁

There is not a single thing that one can not like, correction, 'LOVE' about this bowl. The Apple wood is very interesting to me & the shape is just delightful, I would put fruit in it to go with the 'fish' & the 'horse' & then proudly display it in the centre of my Dining Room table. The thin walls, whether by accident or by design, suit this bowl to a 'T' & I don't believe for one minute that you were ever out of control with this piece, you kept us in the picture for the whole 'ride'. Love your presentation as always as it us in the picture all the time 'peering over your shoulder'. I have to make mention of just how much I love the Feed & Wax finish when you use it, I would like to see it used more often but that is just my opinion. Keep on improving in your health my friend because there are MANY, MANY people who are great fans of your presentations. Cheers mate, Don from South Aust.

Ooh..that was a heart in the mouth watch Phil...as ever, in the words of George Formby: "turned out nice again"😁 I seem to have developed a habit of referring to old time British performers lately for some reason. George Formby used to greet his audiences in his affable Northern accent with that phrase before performing wonderfully memorable songs on his banjo. "I'm leaning on the corner of the street until a certain little lady goes by" is the line of one I've remembered if you want to look him up. 😄 Another beautiful piece which I am certainly enjoying Phil.👍😊

I have to agree with Calmwood Phil . The bowl had its own agenda and you just went with the flow . It is just beautiful ! You want to read a funny ? Well , I am working on the same shape bowl out of Birch . I was aiming for a natural edge due to half the bark coming off but in the end even though it is quite thin ( I did the same thing you did ) the bark just refuses to come off only half the bowl ! So , it is what it is ! Happy turning .
