I actually worry that there are so many horses in so many places where they are mistreated.....either because they don't have a clue about the needs of the horse or because their downright cruel....I wish every horse could have an owner like you ❤.

May all people connected with horses in any way learn from people like Steve Young! Warwick Schiller had a major turnaround in his horse relationships and is now helping so many see the difference. Klaus Hempfling embodies personal self awareness and body control that the horses understand almost instantly and just watching him can turn one’s understanding about. Each one, and there are others who are striving and doing well, is helping humanity as a whole turn their understanding around for the better, so please do share share share these types of videos everyone, because is a great help to the horses everywhere.

I was so relieved you told her he’s not ready. Perhaps he’s not the right horse for her and she can find one she can really enjoy without the fear of being injured . Lovely horse and you were absolutely marvellous.

When you point out the signs of his anxiety they seem clear. I hope you help him. He is such a handsome boy!

Exactly the same behaviour in our new Welsh d , Rupert, last year, throwing rider off, bucking,not wanting to stand at block, getting anxious and blowing, after going down twice with colic we had him scoped and grade 3 ulcers were found, it was a long road to recovery, but with a good diet and always a full tummy he is now the sweetest gentlest horse, super on road hacks, does dressage and happy to do X- Country. Sometimes you have to think outside the box. Hope your lovely Ace gets well soon and you can both ride happily into the sunset.

Karen, you are so right. Ulcers are common in horses if they don’t have 24/7 access to food due to their physiology. Wish everyone would keep haybags filled or good pasture access. And a vet visit should always be included with any behavior problems. Sometimes there are vision problems, MSK pain, etc. Great job taking care of Rupert.

Whenever i start working a new horse i start at the very beginning , Abc ,,that way you quitely find out the little missing parts of their education,,and where mistakes have been made ,,he is soo right ,if you cant do basic ground work with horse you have just bought ,you are not really safe to ride the horse,,not because youre not a "good enough rider" but because ,you need to build a little trust and understanding. Really these podcasts are so good and down to earth ,,cos its Not rocket science ,but it is worth the time to slow down a little and feel calm when you handle your horse,,he Will reflect your state of mind,, More than your level of horsemanship,,ive seen two young teenagers get lent ponies , both green ,the girl,Sam with learning difficulties worked alone slowly ( she was challenged and was not in the clic,,) she very camly made what she wanted very clear ,and had no problem repeating lessons she until he understood,it was really quite something to see how her clarity and patience,really worked ,he became steady and reliable ,never walking off until his rider was totally ready etc: The girl with the better more ridden pony ,very popular girl ,she took about 4weeks to ruin hers ,as he would very soon only go in reverse or rear ,disaster!! He was soon returned to his owner thank goodness. thank-you again for your work posting these videos,,as i am starting my new young pony,( im old and small ,i need small for many reasons not least because i shall be using her to carry wood etc: around the finca ,.) Watching you work is giving me yet another chance in my life to do an even better job than i have done before,,its inspiring ,,bless you🐴🌄🦅

Ace is just beautiful 😍. I thought he had some fresian in him, especially round the fetlocks and how he carries himself when he's trotting. I'm sure he'll come on in leaps and bounds. He looks quite sensitive too.

I was thinking the same thing. Definitely Friesian in there. I think he'd look much more elegant in English tack. It's my bias, I admit. I'm in the US and grew up riding Western, but later switched to English and prefer it because it's more refined. It's strange to me that Western has become so popular in the UK, lol.

Much better having the videos on you tube. Can I suggest getting a microphone with a sock and doing the video In landscape. I think you could really take off then. Brilliant videos, always look forward to the next one x

Yes, too tense to ride. You always have to be prepared to go back to an earlier step in the education, for all sorts of resons. Everything you can do from in the saddle you can do from the ground first.

There is no videographer. Just someone (wife, daughter, etc.) recording with camera phone I think. Since he doesn't use a microphone, it's difficult with sound especially if windy. I just turn on CC to help a little bit.

CC does help, but when we want to hear Steve, and we've adjusted our hearing to his faraway level, the louder voice of your wonderful "videographers" (regardless of relationship, that is the job they are doing) does cause a bit of a startle. I absolutely love the artistry of this family of trainers so I will suffer just fine. Sounds goofy but oh well. Great video, as usual. Thanks so much.

I had the same problem with rugs on a French Trotter I rescued from France who would have gone for slaughter had I not bought him. He had never had a rug on before, and at first world turn his back to me as if he was going to kick me. But luckily he never did, but he would do the same thing as I entered his stable with his feed, I had never known a horse to do that before. Also when putting the saddle on he would move in close to me as if he was going to crush me. I wish I had known about Steve and his techniques back then, cause I really could have done with some expert help. I had to watch everything I did with him because he was unpredictable, but eventually he started to trust me, but I could never really relax around him, but I don't blame him for his behaviour, cause God knows how he was treated in France. I believe he was in a fattening farm, and when he had put enough weight on he would have been transported to Italy for slaughter for human consumption.

I really appreciate these videos that are honest, and show the horse having his or her issues and not just the finished product. Also…that horses and riders get dirty, and there is mud and dirt!

I feel it is asking a lot of any animal to behave if they don't feel well. If ulcers are present, they are painful.

You guys have the best job in the world and live in a fabulous place. You're truly blessed.

It's 35yrs since I began my natural horsemanship journey with PNH. So that's how long each of my horses has been born into and raised that way. Yet none have ever regressed. It takes moments to teach them properly the first time. Why would anyone not teach them properly yet have the time to reteach them the wrong way, over and over? Once learned and known to be a comfortable thing or action, the horse is more than happy to experience the good vibes of doing the action or playing with the thing throughout the remainder of its life. My oldies are now over 25yrs old. They haven't been ridden for many years yet I could step aboard and their question would be where are we going and what will we be playing with along the way? They never were regularly ridden except in their youth. As older horses, they only got ridden when I had time which became less and less as I became more disabled. Oh and I don't use tack or saddle and would not think to do so even now. I have faith that my educational processes were sufficient the first time to instil new knowledge into each horse so it became second nature. If a horse displays these types of idiosyncrasies, then it was never taught properly and will keep needing reteaching until someone does teach it properly. It's not the horse's fault. The horse is not bad because of it. It is 100% the human's fault who is handling it this moment.

Fascinating video. Horse is simply not ready to be ridden. Only a great horseman would recognize that and actually say that. Poor horse seems so anxious and devoid of confidence. Clearly not started right from birth.

Steve: can you find a Pom Pom made from bunny fur or a yarn, that you can wrap around a small recording speaker because it will block out the heavy wind gusts and give you better record ability! Love your videos and keep up the good work!….follow you daily now❤️❤️👍👍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

I keep looking at the bulging muscles on the front of the horses neck. That tells me there's a lot of anxiety possibly coupled with poor riding that never brought the horses neck down. If it were me, I know the horse needs loads if groundwork as you have alluded too. I would have a chiropractic exam done as well. I suspect some neck issues may be present. I'm not sure if this was the horse that had ulcers or not. He's a project that's for sure.

They need better equipment. Steve needs his own microphone.

I was taught that the rug was done up - on back to front - and off front to back so if something happened the rug could come off 😊

That first saddle looks very similar to my saddle, I love mine! It’s a frameless endurance saddle (made in Germany) and will cinch and expand as needed as you ride. It can be used with western tack or remove the horn and use English tack so very handy depending on the use. Like carrying a rope, bags or a jacket.

What a beautiful horse. He is just nervous. He needs more attention.

When you are calm and clear then they trust and engage and you become a team...

Loved your work with the old mare Pearl. About blanketing Ace, delighted to see preparatory work tip, but 1 question. I've always been told that whatever one does on one side one should repeat on other, (including mounting and dismounting). Saw that in action with Pearl. Is one side in this case only because one blankets always on this side?

What I like about the wintec . Draft or mustang, Arabian or thoroughbred there’s a bracket that will fit.

Not sure if you explained this but is there a reason you cannot switch your video to Panoramic view instead of your Portrait view? thanks.

Love your vids . Going though thwm all now. I could do with a bit of advice to do with a horse freezing under saddle. He blind in his right eye. But that is definitely not a problem. We do liberty alot. Can't fault him. He amazing going no where.. Guess him name. Lol

I have purchased many horses like that, it just takes a lot of work and time, which is actually fun for me.

Love your videos. Hard to hear the instruction when the person holding the camera is shouting near the microphone. Please consider how close to the mic you are as my ears get blown out. Really do not want to miss the instruction but I have to keep lowering the volume. Many thanks for posting these!

Never hurts with a western saddle to turn it on it's back and run your hands down the panels. As a Saddler I have found nails sticking out a tad. To be fair it has only been two saddles, but to be fair again that is the sum total of roping saddles I have worked on in nearly fifty years. We don't see many of them here in Australia. The nails were flat headed "case "nails, driven up through the panel into the tree. They had worked their way loose after many years. If you find them pull them out, and just keep an eye on your saddle. Should still hold together alright.

So true. My friend had a saddle like that, many nails that did not belong, and she had a saddle maker repair it. This was an expensive brand western saddle. surprising that quality brand had that done. (usa)

He has no confidence, and panics and a rider was too much.hes strong,that he felt,but also needed trust.

Guys, you have great content & videos, but the volume modulation is way off. Whoever is holding the phone has to realize their voice comes across as far too LOUD next to the people or person they're filming! It makes your videos very hard to listen to properly. I find I'm forever adjusting the volume, so I miss half of what's being said. To the person operating the phone please be conscious of how loud your voice is. You're making these otherwise fine videos almost unwatchable.

Can you explain why people put blankets on their horses?

Western saddles are made with flex bars that are made for broad backed horses. Here in the USA. Those saddles are terrific. They are not pinchy.

Steve - I'm curious as to your thoughts about this: I always let my OTTB look at & smell anything new that I introduced him to. It helped him. As they are "Prey Animals" - throwing the blanket on his back, it could've been a mountain lion... to his mind! Sad that a horse that old was so startled by a blanket/rug! Wow - really not trail ready at all.

Such a good horse. If you would take your time with him and teach him very well and then after a while on the saddle he would be a really good horse. He tries to please and he tries really hard but he is not ready yet. If you would take him to a trainer who trains him wrong you could break him really bad so be careful with that. Go easy on him and teach him well and be as firm as you must but don't overdo it. I know horses who doesn't try and they are in my opinion the worst because you first need to change their mind and then you can work with them but he is a good boi x3

At least he stands tied; my guy broke loose once to run with other horses and he hasn't tied since. He's almost 22 yo.

She was called Julia but he was fantastic in traffic, rugs etc no issues at all I rode out with her on my d he was a lovely horse. So wondered if this is him. It was a few years ago though

She is actually his assistant, (daughter), so she is supposed to comment. I like her a lot, she is on her way to be a great trainer, if not already. She is doing the best she can with the equipment provided. How about a fundraiser for all new fancy video equipment? Comment numbers may go down, but maybe not! Thanks Steve for doing all your work in wet field, because I feel right at home with that weather. Matches our western Washington state to a tee.

It takes away from the usual professionalism and is distracting to the point I have to stop watching. Your wife is brilliant though and got the balance just right and doesn’t take away from you’re conveying.

Gout is a bit like obesity. Both are caused and controlled by the sufferer. Completely not the same as a sprain. Crystals? In the foot? Sounds awful.

Gout is a form of arthritis. It’s extremely painful when it flairs up. Arthritis is usually much worse on an area that has been damaged in the past. Just a bit of info.

I don't get it. Who buys a horse, leaves him in a field, and then expects him to behave beautifully in a new place, after months and months off? My own horses, who are good solid citizens, are slowly legged up on the ground every single spring. It's not some big huge issue. I fully expect them to be frisky and out of shape after a winter off, so I plan for that every year. If I had a NEW horse, I'd plan for even more ramp up time as we got to know each other. I honestly have no idea what these people are thinking.

Lots and lots of ground work needed before anyone attempts to ride him .Its going to take a long time before he allows anyone to sit on his back .
