Access Jellyfin from anywhere || Port Forwarding
Ойын-сауық
In the last video I had shown you how you can build your own media server using a open source software called Jellyfin.
In this video, I will be showing you how you can turn on remote access and stream your contents from anywhere in the world.

well, this works but is against all comon sense... DO NOT OPEN PORTS, use tailscale or wireguard or something else instead.. if u really want to open ports use a reverse proxy with SSL, cant believe this video have so many views
I'm new to this. This port checker helped me. Very impressive content. Thank you so much. Our community is small, but with people like you, it is lively and positive to learn and grow.

No, you definitely need to set up HTTPS if the server is going to be publicly available. I don't understand why you think it's not that important.
Thanks to you I discovered I wasn't using the good ip adress when logging to the server. Got the good one from the checking port website. 👌
Wow, this guy advice is worth exactly what you paid for.

Thanks mate. At least I can watch Movies and Show on my Ubuntu Server. Now I need a VPN for more secure connection and give access to a few relatives and friends.
No mention of security risks here? Probably not the best idea to just open a port to the internet without some sort of security protocol.

I have been using for three years or so… Haven’t faced any security risks yet. So, good luck for you!
Thank you!!! YOu saved me!!
I'd advise against port 9000 as its a default port for most portainer tutorials and portainer is a very valuable application for people expanding their home labs and media servers. I'm a big fan of changing default ports for media servers because it's just so easy for botnets to scour the globe looking for a billion noobs with open 32400 or 8096 ports, but you should change it to something that isn't already used by burgeoning software

I'm not even sure why but it worked on linux but to windows couldn't connect from my TV. Changing the port to 9000 worked. Although I guess it could create be another issue later. So far worked, thanks.
Well done nice easy explanation. A good tip about your video editing, would be to try to make certain things a bit clearer. It's typically a good diea to save the URL for access to the server..... once the port is changed, it'd be easier to just edit the link and change the port in the link to 9000 and save it. It was a bit muddled during the explanation. Otherwise - great video - very very helpful.

excuse isr if you are on the same network with the neighbor you have also a router with you you have an internet connection also, does jellyfin uses internet bandwidth while your using it?
@d_c_y_1

No, it’ll stream over the router without using the bandwidth if you’re on the same network!
great video, but as a newbie i got lost almost instantly. i just bought a synology 420+. i have jellyfine installed on it and seems to work very well on my local ntwrk. however remote access has been a pain in butt. can u please propose a simple solution that I can do with few clicks. i don't mind paying for extra stuff
@d_c_y_1
Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I don’t have synology and don’t have enough knowledge about that. It would be much better if you could redirect yourself to some tutorials made for port forwarding on synology. By the way, Do you have a dedicated ip?
I have done all of this, and confirmed that my outward facing IP port is open. I am using the newer Xfinity XB8 in bridge mode and the UniFi USG as my router. Have triple checked all settings and can not get Jellyfin to work outside my network. The setup is so simple, I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong. All of the UniFi videos available either just touch on basic port forwarding, or do their best to confuse only the most tech savvy. I am pretty tech-smart, so I'm frustrated beyond compare. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

@@ElliottDay-ok6ti Sorry for the late response! Yes I did actually. Today. I didn't do anything differently. I had it working once before but it stopped just after I left the country for 6 weeks, and was going to rely on my video library heavily, so I'm curious to see how long it continues to work at this point. Using the outward facing IP address as a second server in the app seems to be working now. I'm also having trouble with the Jellyfin's Quick Connect feature. It has only worked once out of at least 30 attempts. No rhyme or reason that I can find. How are you fairing?
I use Tailscale - no port forwarding needed. And it's free and dead simple to setup.

You can use the Cloudflare method (also made a video on that) to do the same which is easier if you don’t have a static ip. However, you need to run a separate software for these things.

@@d_c_y_1I heard cloudflare can ban you though is it possible to have tailscale to remote access outside my network but have my NordVPN keep my IP secured since tailscale doesn’t do port forwarding?
Port forwarding is the most simplest method and much easier. Yes it opens up to security issues. But you can isolate using VLANS to add security to your network. You can use tailscale if you want security as well. But it means you need to run tailscale on the client side to work. Again more steps. Especially for family members that are not tech savy. Its not an easy task.
What isthe recommended upload speed for 1080p 2 gb movie
@d_c_y_1

It entirely depends on the movie bitrate. you can simply lower the resolution with bitrate in order to reduce bandwidth usage. However, usually at least 15 mbps is needed to stream 1080p movies

I guess your isp is sharing you internet from another router. So, you need to port forward on their router which will is quite hard from a user perspective. However, you can check my Cloudflare method in my channel. It won’t need any kind of router configuration. Let me know if that works
