This same thing applies for Zerotier and other similar services. I see you use Emby, i use Plex and for the life of me i can't figure it out how to do it securely without complex configurations involving VPS's, just to be able to setup "Custom server access URL" option within Plex settings in order to make it work.

Interesting video. So, this is essentially an OpenVPN replacement. How well does this work on a Linux headless install? If you are headless, can you do a LAN scan to find your other devices easily? If headless, would it work kind of like RealVNC, in the sense that, you remote into the machine and everything you type in is visible on the host machine screen or is it just a standard SSH session where everything is happening in the background? Hope that made sense, essentially wondering if you were to try and help debug someone else's headless machine they shared with you, if they could watch the debug process. Are you able to set static IPs? Not quite sure if I'm ready to ditch OpenVPN yet, but the no port forwarding is quite appealing.

  • @DBTechYT

Good questions. I have been able to SSH into a headless system and run all my commands via command line, so that works WONDERFULLY. They wouldn't be able to watch what you're doing, though unless you were both logged into something like a TinyPilot/PiKVM and were running the commands that way, which wouldn't be ideal.

I think the only problem with tailscale is that you end up having a myriad of endpoints to maintain the software releases on as they're pushed out and I think it would get tedious to do this constantly or across the board be it monthly or even irregularly. The introduction video to tailscale is good David, so thanks for that as I had come across it but never taken the time to check it out properly, I just don't like dishing out counterparty risk to a 3rd party when it comes to security or my network, but for a simplistic/hand offs solution for other people that are happy with it, I say go. for it. I've used wireguard via pivpn for a while now and the setup was not complex or complicated to do (curl bash script && install && a few iptables rules) and we're golden.

Exit Nodes are the gateways where encrypted Tor traffic hits the Internet. This means an exit node can be abused to monitor Tor traffic (after it leaves the onion network). It is in the design of the Tor network that locating the source of that traffic through the network should be difficult to determine. However, if the exit traffic is unencrypted and contains identifying information, an exit node can be abused. More info: hackertarget.com/tor-exit-node-visualization/

hi good video. i'm not an it guy so please be patient. after watching this video i seem to understand that you can set up tailscale on ant device and as long as all your other devices are added to tailscal each device can "see" the content /apps on the other devices. If this is the case great . In my case I have a proxmox server with opnsense truenas 9on which jellyfin is installed) and home assistant as VMs. My objective is to reach the jellyfin content on my tablet or phone when i'm out. therefore i can install tailscale one of my windows pc which would act as a controller and then all the other devices as clients correct? Thank you once again for a clearly explained video

The controller is still on TailScale's servers. You just need figure out which devices you want to be on your TailScale network and add them. Then, to access the devices remotely, you'll use the IP Address given to that device by TailScale.

You would go here: tailscale.com/download and follow the directions to install the agent on any of the devices you want on your Tailscale network and then this video should do the rest for you with regards to getting the different devices on the network. Then you would just get on the device you want to use to watch Plex, connect to the Tailscale network, open the Plex app or a browser and point it to your Plext server's Tailscale IP on port 32400. So if the Tailscale IP for your Plex server was "100.101.102.103", you'd connec to 100.101.102.103:32400 in either the browser or the Plex App.

ZeroTier equivalent in my opinion. P2P solution. This doesn't require port forwarding indeed, similar concept to p2p cameras accessed via UID. Ideal option for home automation users, granting access to local Hassio instances (or other resources). ZeroTier has a good clients for Mac OS, iOS, Android, Linux and Windows but it would be great to see if this can work on Synology too (not virtual machine), giving access to docker apps (especially 720+ or 920+ models).

Per zerotier's website: ZeroTier One for Synology NAS is designed for DSM 6+ and can be installed on any ARM, x86, or x64 based Synology NAS device. Once installed you can join virtual networks from the ZeroTier One web UI. Currently setup via QuickConnect is not supported. Check the ZeroTierNAS repository for more information.

@@DBTechYT Yep, but zero tier repository does not show a gemini lake processor spk. Some say apollo lake works instead, but so far I haven't found any source showing it really works and how to install this on a synology. The problem might be co-existence with QuickConnect, (UI conflicts) but if Zerotier is set once through cli (similarly to raspberry configuration) zero tier's access via UI is not a mandatory point. Once connected via ZeroTier, quick connect doesn't seem to be required option. So, the point is how to get access to Synology, having no zero tier on it. Via other device in the same network using ZeroTier? Perhaps this could be a clue to explore: zerotier.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SD/pages/193134593/Bridge%2Byour%2BZeroTier%2Band%2Blocal%2Bnetwork%2Bwith%2Ba%2BRaspberryPi

@@DBTechYT Hey, thanks for commenting. Appreciate your channel very much! What I mean by that (maybe a not so ideal term): ZeroTier has no built-in, computer-spanning DNS system, using local DNS servers (in local routers) is also not really possible / feasible, because most routers don‘t even „see“ the ZT devices (there are options for some router OSes however). I have ordered a cheap public domain and use it exclusively for ZT DNS resolution (I use Cloudflare as my DNS server). So I got „domain.tld“ and have pointed several subdomains to my ZT private IP addresses: server1.domain.tld would therefore resolve to 192.168.100.7 (just a random private IP address which could be used in ZT). By doing that, I can use the DNS name server1.domain.tld as equivalent for the (private) ZT IP for everything from SSH to websites to other services on any port. This DNS name of course only works if the computer is in the right ZT network, for the broader public it doesn‘t resolve to something useful. I think TailScale does something similar „built in“ with Magic DNS (I could be wrong). For me this is just „nicer“ to use than IP addresses which might not be that easy to memorize. As I said before: With ZTNCUI, a self-hostable controller removes all limits, so that ZT is truly cost free for whatever size of network(s) is required. I host it on my docker host which is a small virtual server with 1 Gbit connection. That way it could even do relay transfers if necessary (mostly it is not necessary). The my.zerotier.com controller would also relay, but only at a very minimal speed. I regularly copy files over ZT from an internet server (2,5Gbit uplink) to my home (1Gbit Downlink via cable) via SMB (only over ZT) and I have a speed of up to 80Mbytes/s, so very comparable to your TailScale speed.

both devices have to be on the same TailScale network. And you would need a remote desktop app on your phone. Also, your computer needs to be configured to receive remote connection requests. Once all of those criteria are met, you should be able to open the app on your phone, put in your PC's TailScale IP address (and possibly the remote desktop port) and you should be able to connect.
