@@themaggattack not saying the american accent is bad, but i do agree with you. the american accent sounds quite off to me. i guess it's the lack of diverse vowels (e.g the tendency to turn vowels in words into the schwa sound) and strong rhotic sound (i.e. hard R) that make the american accent sound kinda rough imo.

I like to think that those times when Sarah and Felix's accents aren't entirely accurate to South London, it's because they lived in London long enough to establish their accents, but moved young enough that their accents would have been slightly warped in places. Same with Rachel. While in Canada, they would have had very little contact with their initial accents except for each other, and so it would warp over time. I would even guess that in real life their accents would be more muddled than they are on the show. You see it quite often with british celebrities that move to america - after several years there, when they are interviewed, their accents will warp in some places and they start to sound 'mid-atlantic' or just very muddled.

@littlesmew I've heard that that's because the young actresses couldn't manage to do Northern accents so it was decided that the girls would adopt their mother's Southern accent while the boys favoured their father. However, Michelle Fairley's English accent never rang true to me as I could very clearly hear a lot of Irish (I'm an Irish woman with a mixed up accent!).

Downton Abbey will help with that. I saw an interview once were the cast that played "downstairs" explained they got lessons in speaking even though they are Northeners (apparently they needed them to slow down when talking).
