Honestly, 150 kW 3.0d engine is on of the best diesel engines in BMW history. Reliable, efficient, powerful and very nice to drive because of it's agility. But compared to the mighty 3.0i 170 kW, it's just not enough :-)

    Proud owner of both these engines!! Couldn't pick between them so i drive them both from time to time. I drive the petrol more than the diesel tho. The exhaust note and the throttle response wins me over.

    @@dyzzlog3499 I drove my 330ci hard for years, the gearbox and clutch were fine. If you’re gonna do a video showing the speed of a car, then you go for it, not half arse it.

    This is a very good car. And the four wheel drive is excellent (it is not like the current xdrive that will break soon and will cost several thousands of euros). Im selling one of this e46 330xd reprogrammed to around 260cv full equiped. A real beast.

    diesels are severely restricted due to emissions. I have a modded E90 335D, with DPF/SCR removed, EGR delete, ECU remap. Over 650 ft-lbs of torque (880 nm) means I can pull past 500 hp gasser (petrol) cars with ease. If you remove emissions and remap the ECU, diesels pull quicker than gasoline equivalent.

    No disel always lose, if you have turbo disel vs turbo petrol gues what. All disels have to have turbo to be compareble to atmosferic petrol engines. 3 liter turbo petrol can easily 500+ hp car and pass emisions, and 3 liter disel can be at max 380 and not pasing emisions or anything. And if you go wild with maping and parts as you went for getting 380-400 hp from disel with petrol engine you are looking at 800-1000 hp

    Robert Ecker Charging the 30i?? Why not buy an M3 then? Cheeper, than a proper turbocharcing process, trust me. 30d with a simple optimising runs faster, and lasts longer.

    First of all, the diesel clearly is a sedan or estate, while the petrol car is a coupé or cabriolet. That should be disclosed, as the curb weights can differ quite a bit. Also, in my experience as a 150 kW 330d owner, it is quicker to shift into second a bit early, so that the engine has time to really build boost in second gear. Also, the gear will go in a bit easier. Very interesting nonetheless!

    the 330d has the low range torque advantage, and the 330i is pulling away above 100km/h, more high range power. Also 20kW power difference, and not to mention the weight difference, assuming the diesel is a bit heavier. I know with the E90 3 Series, the 320d is actually quicker on the 0 to 60 compared to the 320i, same amount of power, but the diesel with lots more torque.

    Dude,320d is 163hp and 320i is 150hp,and 320i can keep up to 0-60,difference is like 0.1-0.2,that is a very good,and its true diesels can keep up up to 120kmh,i mean 330i is here faster even to 0-60,after that,good bye...

    Nice compare but you should compare 3.0i petrol after 03/2003 ( with 6 speed gearbox and red lin under 6500) . Diesel is in nice condition

    @@legioner9 it would be pretty even till about 100kmh after that the 330i will take over because off the hp difference. Diesel cars have way more torque than petrol, thats why they are faster at the start. But at higher speeds petrol will accelerate faster

    This is only half the story. Yes the 330i is quicker 0-60. Few will argue against that. But test the real world performance and see what you get. 30-50, 50-70, 70-100 mph. I remember my 330d would pull like few others could above 100 ;) Only problem was the engine note. It never sounded bad, but compared to a petrol 330i it was rubbish. The 335d is properly quick though. I'd have that any day over a 330i.

    Its because 330d have turbos. They have boost on lower ref and na petrol does not. Thats why it does better in the 30-50 etc. I know it from experience. Still na is awesome at higher ref

    we should compare turbo petrol vs turbo diesel , and we know the answer. Turbocharge m54b30 and it's game over for diesel . I like m57 one of the greatest diesels ever but it will need a lot of other stuff to beat turbo m54. The point is bmw already has a 1.5l 1500hp petrol engine used in F1 turbo era and there is nothing like it in a diesel world from any brad ever. Diesel is for relaxed and economy drive petrol is for hp per liter.

Stage 1 remap and delete Pre cat and mine would obviously piss over both but stock I have had her at 6.8 seconds to 60 but timing has to be perfect as diesels mehhh 🤔 but I love mine because she’s all tuned now! But that take off was shocking!

    most likely short shifting to stay on peak torque, revving all the way in a diesel comes off of the power band eventually as it is not a linear power delivery like petrol

    That m57 has a fucking boost leak for sure. That turbo kicks in rather rowdy (own one) whereas this one fucking feels like a lame ass NA diesel. And the shifts are shit.

    Although the 330d is 132hp/t and 330i is 157hp/t the 330d seems to produce the same effective power as the 330i although its top power is lower so I think only the weight makes the difference. Basically from 0-180 they produce the same amout of energy (energy is power x time where you divide time into small bits and chose average power on the interval then add all the bits 😝 ) that’s probably because of the turbocharger that gives more lower rpm torque Power depends on torque amd rpm (analogous to force and speed) so let’s see an example the diesel has 3000-4800rpm 410Nm- 296Nm which means 172Hp to 200Hp (1800rpm band) Gasoline 4500-6500 rpm 285Nm to 250Nm that gives 170 to 230Hp on a 2000rpm band well... hmm the gasoline makes more power acording to this so maybe it’s not actually doing that 230hp 3000rpm 410Nm is equivalent to 4500rpm 285Nm

    I think that it is not even fair to compare these engines since they are not both naturally aspirated nor both turbocharged engines, its basically apples to oranges comparison. The fact that petrol engine outpreforms TURBO (fact that many peasants forget) diesel makes it superior. Just imagine the power of the petrol one if it was turbocharged or the absurdity of the naturally aspirated diesel engine in the BMW.

    @@charlyvss5440 Salut, c'était mon ex femme qui la conduisait tous les jours, environ 6,5l au 100 que des petits trajets pour aller au boulot et elle avait le pied lourd... Exemple : J'avais fais Royan/Biarritz à 4,4l au 100, Royan/Paris à 4,9l au 100 etc... aux limites de vitesse bien sûr, régulateur, limiteur à 132 bref sacrée bonne bagnole... En tirant dedans comme un ours elle n'a jamais dépassé 9l au 100, si mes souvenirs sont bons on avait fait 1040 ou 1070kms avec le plein... elle montait à 235kmh et le son du 6el ligne c'était un régal...adio

    diesel engine was made for heavy duty work, not top speed racing. try N/A 16D vs 1.6i petrol and let them run under the load until one engine fails. its just pointless to compare two so different engines. and if you want rematch: put 500bhp electric v 500bhp petrol :P

    you mean the diesel will drive great after a new turbo, maybe a fuel pump too and the petrol will probably need a vanos rebuild

    @@bence.gabor.slezak I have a 330d with 350kkm and all I had to replace was the injector on 6th cylinder Turbo, as in any engine, will last a long time, provided that it has regular oil changes, i.e. every 10-15kkm Record holder that I have personally seen (although in a different brand car), the original turbo had 524kkm before it needed repair That's right, the fuel pump for the 3.0d is a bit expensive, but you can replace it yourself with one wrench and a screwdriver, unlike vanos repair which is not that simple M54 yes, repair vanos, replace ignition coils, disa valve, many other sensors that are NOT CHEAP The M54 sounds nice and runs smooth, but personally I wouldn't buy it

    @@0595michal You most probably (like 99%) need to replace turbo, heat relay, chain (if you like to smash throttle) and list goes on and on. Petrol M54 is more durable than diesel engine in every way.

    from 100 to 200 i think the diesel ist faster
