Great helpful video Trent. I've been playing the piccolo trumpet since 1973. Here's some of my opinions and observations. Like the B-flat trumpet sound is everything. After all these years I still listen to Maurice Andre and Matthias Höfs almost daily just to get a good sound in my head. I always do about 15 minutes of warm up on the Bb or C before moving to the piccolo. I never start the piccolo cold, for me that equates to disaster. It's very important to get used to the "A" pipe as that is what you will need for most Baroque literature. Back in the day most arrangements were written for trumpet in D or C, so good transposition is a must. I won't go into it here, but what I used was "clef transposition", this was also Andre's approach. To eliminate tightness in the sound I generally use a mouthpiece with a 25 throat verses a stock 27 throat. Here are some mouthpieces I have used: Bach 7E with 25 throat and 117 backbore, Schilke 14A4X and Stomvi 5P. These mouthpieces seem to open up the horn and relieve stress. I believe Andre' used a Bach 7D with a 25 throat and 117 backbore. I was fortunate to have a good piccolo teacher early on. I will say Baroque is where it's at! Torelli, Telemann, Albinoni, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Bach are great places to start. Trent thank you so much for your great videos!

When I started piccolo I loved playing the Getchell book one all the way through. I found there is nothing like playing melodies you know for getting your ear used to the small horn. Maybe one day I’ll return to it, you’ve rekindled my interest. Great video thanks.

Still loving the Yamaha flugelhorn horn I got from ACB. I use it mostly as a volunteer with Bugles Across America. I recently picked up a piccolo trumpet and found Trent’s instructional videos. I’ll be watching for more, thanks!

Great question! I personally think you need to have a solid high c on the big horns before starting on piccolo. Both can benefit each other's high registers.
