Hula is not for your entertainment. It may look good, but it doesn't necessarily mean it fits within the parameters the judges have for the definition of a proper hula performance.

@@kahoaalohamalalis8841 Hula serves as entertainment in today's context. Take a look around you. I acknowledge the importance of preserving cultural aspects and ceremonies, but hula has adapted over time. For some of my kanaka, hula has been a means of livelihood. While hula originated from traditional practices, teachers were given the freedom to innovate. So why can't people continue to innovate? Ah, it's the guidelines set by the MM/judges. Understood. Seems there's little room for innovation.The MM needs to be revamped!

@@wayneLua I would suggest speaking with the kumu who had just competed against one another. They have a very different perspective on this subject.

This halal is very, very enthusiastic and my favorite. Reminds me of the past when the men of nakamalei were such favorites but never took the top prize. Change come slowly.

Just because Mark is not “traditional “ and he goes against the grain.. I love it even more! The best in the game idc idc!!!!! His music brings LIFE!!!❤️

I thought they do good, but my GF who is a Hula dancer says they are not in sync if you look good & lose points for not being in line & in sync thru out performance. I watched this performance over & over & now understand whatshe meant. No get me wrong tho its nice & beautiful to watch.But She just showed me a video of the top Halaus & I see what she means now. Just my 2 cents🤷‍♂ And Congrats to all who performed, its not about winning anyhow its about keeping our culture alive at the end of the day

@@dean96792able It's all personal preference! Mark is only their to perform his non-traditional way of doing things! And they despise him for it.....and he knows it👌😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 he always wins when his halau enters👍 Ain't none of the Kumu's sing or chant like Him💯 and out of all the Halau's since he's entered the competition.... Has always been the #1 crowd favorite💪 his previous stuff was better though! You should watch👀 He tuned it down alot this year...must be age😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 personally I wasn't blown away by their performance this year😢✌ just know.... There's major politics @merriemonarchfestival

Why? They are the ones who are knowledgable about the culture and what is within its parameters or not. That's why they were chosen to be a judge. Why, you mo' better to judge? Who you to say so?

@@kahoaalohamalalis8841 Mark is moving the culture forward but these stubborn judges and their bias acts can’t accept our culture to evolve into a bigger and beautiful culture. They want slow and boring every year. Mark is the only kumu most rather watch he doesn’t change anything he adds/create on. Good for those other kumu/dancers and their hard work but we already seen that a million times. So we rather have other judges that is willing to accept other things into hula.
